  • A look back at the boxing career of Diego 'Chico' Corrales. Unfortunately, I had to cut out a few clips because of rights issues, namely his fight against Robert Garcia and the first Joel Casamayor fight.

Corrales- Castillo I was the best fight I ever saw live in my entire life back and forth action and the finale was unreal. Corrales coming back in the 10th from getting dropped two times and then stopping Castillo in the same round! Are you kidding me? I still get an adrenaline rush watching that. Never seen anything like that before in a boxing match

    • @itsnotme3882

You beat me to it. I remember seeing that fight and thinking how unreal it was. At first I thought that stoppage was premature but Castillo seemed happy enough with the fight just being over. During the replay during the ring interviews I realized BOTH of them were nearly out on their feet, Corrales just wanted it more and was able to dig deep and find what he needed to win

Was a big fan of Chico, as a fellow Sacramentan. But when I read about him beating his pregnant wife, all respect was gone.
Had a huge heart in the ring, and none outside of it. It was so distressing to hear so many people pull the whole, "Hey, no one's perfect" defense, because it really illustrated just how we make allowances for athletes/celebrities.
Anyways, good work on the video.

Very early in his career I knew him because I trained at the same gym at the same time.
Honestly, I didn't like him at all but I'd still talk to him when I'd see him to be cordial. He was very cocky and arrogant. It's wasn't like he was the baddest guy in the gym either, compared to a lot of us he was tiny and could just be picked up and given a helicopter ride like a little kid.
Maybe being like that is required to be a champ but Rodney Jones, Tony Lopez, Pete Ranzani and many more champs came from that same gym, they were very likable and humble.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into these great videos, this one of my favorite youtube channels.

Quite a few really good boxers came out of the Oak Park section of South Sacramento.
Off the top of my head was Pete Ranzani, Loreto Garza . Tony Lopez, Mike Dallas Jr (I trained a lot with Sr who also boxed with moderate success), Willie Jorrin, Rodney Jones and others that had big fights.
The owner was Ernie Guevara , the father of Joe Guevara that had a phenomial start until he faced Carlos Zarate. Joe told me Zarate had tremendous punching power, nothing like he had ever experienced.
They way you described the area as rough was very true. There were gangs, pimps, dealers everywhere, especially near the gym (Capitol Boxing). The PAL (Police Athletic League) also fostered may good boxers, that facility was nearby.
Often the guys from the PAL gym would go to Capitol to train as well and participate in the Saturday gym wars.
Rodney Jones is someone that anyone could be instant friends with, a super nice guy. Same with Tony Lopez, almost all of the guys I met.
My trainer for a few years was Timothy Harris, he lasted 7-8 rounds with Julian Jackson in his prime.(vid on youtube) He had a few title shots vs Nino LaRocca(youtube also) and had won a CA State belt but never had great success. He shot his ex's attorney and is still in prison I believe. I was around right at that time and he was in great distress over money/ child support.

15:18 I hate to see someone win a fight by means other than beating their opponent but Mayweather should have been disqualified.

I agree when they said they brought Diego ex and put her in the front how dirty is that. Mayweather was a great fighter but to me he must have been woried that he might get beat. Great documentary though

That was a calculated callus tactical maneuver before and after the dayz of Jay Edgar Hoover . 😂 🎉

He was wildly popular just about everywhere else except his hometown of Sacramento. It’s a great fight town with a pretty storied history but they never embraced Diego. He never boxed there once he became a world class fighter. I think it was because when he beat up his wife that made the front page of the Sacramento Bee . However when he won a fight it was buried in the sports section..He was well known there but not necessarily in a good way..

As a fighter Diego was incredible, aggressive, powerful with a huge heart and was pretty much always in exciting fights.
It seemed his approach to boxing and life meant he was destined to die young tho.
    Great docu, thanks Rich!

Castillo will always be disgraced for purposely missing weight because he was butt hurt about the first fight. Cost him millions and rightfully so. As Emmanuel Stewart said, he not a HOF'er and never should be.

THIS MAN WILL ALLLLLWAYS BE REMEMBERED FOR THAT FIGHT, ALLLLLWAYS. HE SHOWED HE HAD A LOT OF HEART IN THAT 10TH ROUND. BEATEN & BATTERED, HE STILL HAD ENOUGH IN THE TANK TO COME OUT VICTORIOUS.

Floyd Mayweather gave Chico his flowers. That was a great fight and Diego Corrales was definitely one of the top guys in his division back then. He had a good Long reach and KO power in both hands, that's what I like to see.

Alot of people pick round 9 Gattie vs Ward as the best round of all time and don't get me wrong its definitely up there but I have always said round 10 Corrales vs Luis is the closet thing you see in boxing movies but in real life absolutely amazing the crowd reaction the commentators the coach the two knockdowns and spitting of the mouthpiece and point reduction to the last minute KO freaken amazing I have rewatched that round at least 100 times throughout my life and get goosebumps everytime
