    We need more schools that still use her approach to learning. Create them if they no longer exist.

    No Marva Collins' method will never be outdated...never. I am not a mother or teacher by profession but I will do my part in helping children to read. Its important!!

      Same! I agree with everything you've said. The most important and effective part of her teaching was her encouragement. Encouragement will always be in style.

      YESSS! And encouragement not only builds relationships, but it is a major driving factor in motivating children and getting them to fall in love with learning independently.

    Greetings from England. Somebody needs to make a new documentary on her. I have seen the movie the Marva Collins story. But it saddens me that she has all but been forgotten through the passage of time.

      Yes!!!! It was like she was forgotten about. I'm glad we had to opportunity to speak about her because her research is timely even in modern day education.

    Great to see her legacy continues. My first teaching experience was at Westside Prep in the 80's. I learned everything I needed to know about teaching while I was there. Although I ended up teaching for Chicago, I low-key skirted around every program they forced on us and used her simplistic approaches to teach. lol I just recently retired.

      Hi,
      I am currently a student at Chicago State University in the Early Childhood Education. I would like to communicate with you on her teaching methods. Did any of her schools survive in Chicago?

    Marva Collins was a hero and A Superb Educator, In NYC last year it was Mandated for phonics to be used in their curriculum ! Phonics Can Never Be Outdated it does NOT matter what a students ethnicity is ! Thats why Hooked On Phonics is a excellent tool for any child experiencing reading difficulties!

    How can the sounds of the alphabet ever be outdated....🤦🏿‍♀️🥴

    • @EverythingAJA
      @EverythingAJA  7 месяцев назад

      Exactly. Her approach to teaching letter sounds is just as prevalent today as it was decades ago.

    I learned the different vowel sounds like she taught.We attended a Catholic school in kindergarten first & some 2nd because the public schools in Virginia Beach didn't teach phonics in 1964 - 1966. Mom didn't let us have TV, she would read books like Treasure Island, Black Beauty, The Call of the Wild after dinner in 2nd, 3rd & 4th grades. I learned to love reading and won many spelling bees. I can't imagine trying to read by rote. Our public schools had an equal number of black and white students and teachers. We were all treated equally though we did live in different neighborhoods. I just learned about Marva Collins recently and was glad to see your program today. What a shame education is being used as a racist and religious ideology. Our country has really slid into such a scary power grab. Keep up the good work and don't give up.I really wish the silent majority would push back hard!

    Marva Collins is not outdated for anyone, of any background. (Well, at least, for English speakers.)

    In my 14th year as an educator, I'm so happy we black educators are having this convo. However, the key to her teaching style was affirming her students. i believe that will never die but i di believe the hard work twach phonics approach can be outdated today

    What does race have to do with it !

    • @EverythingAJA
      @EverythingAJA  7 месяцев назад +2

      Race was brought up because most of the educators here, like myself, are minorities and teach in urban areas with majority minority students. There is plenty of research that then supports how environmental factors such as economic stature play a role in education. Hence, why race is an important factor especially in Title I schools.
