      singapore is a unique case where the govt can be honestly transparent because the pap has a solid foothold on power. in fragmented democracies, such candor wouldnt work because politicians pursue short term populism for elections.
      not that the system can be used elsewhere, lky is clean to begin with and competent.

    Do you know that according to recent report, the no. 1 country where people around the World wants to migrate to is Singapore. If it's that badly managed, why would people want to flock there? If Singaporean are so dissatisfied with Singapore, Malaysia is just a bridge away. Is Singapore's administration perfect? No, but it's administration is one of the best and constantly being studied by other countries to be emulated. LKY is one of the people that i admired a whole lot. Well done Singapore!

      He did not forget the Philippines. Once somebody complained about there being a crisis and jobs going to Philippines. He asked, what do you want me to do, expel all Philippines? The crisis will pass. So he essentially protected Philippines and did not use them as scapegoats.

    ....i would say that PAP's amalgamation of democracy, meritocracy and a dash of totalitarian in some areas HAS WORKED. BUT, i also know Singapore is changing and the old method might not work in the future, therefore its up to us next gen. to do something and learn from these seniors and move forward in an informed manner. Not just randomly chasing a dream of 100% liberalization or "democracy". LOOK AT PHILLIPINES (no offence)

    I love LKY's accomplishments, and think the interviewers didn't do the best of jobs, requiring LKY to "carry" the interview, but I wish he didn't shrug and seem dismissive at times - I fear it will only convey to the young that PAP finds them frivilous and unimportant. There's always the danger of the young be infected by Marxists / American socialism.

    hello, I searched the websites of the "interview titled "Youthful Concerns" found on the DVD on the back cover of the new book "Lee Kuan Yew Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going"." but, didn't come across the name of the female interviewer. Is it possible to find out? The reason is that her voice is very soothing and if possible, i'd like to hear more of it if there is any more. Thank you, Cilla

    Yes, Singapore is an economic model that has been emulated by many Asian countries including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and our rival Malaysia. It is something that the west should learn and follow. On social policy, I think we can do better. Not to say we should implement free health care, cuz that would create tradeoffs with other important programs but more benefits for kids and seniors. You're welcome and thank you for your kind praises.

    In the last part, he actually meant he’d rather live in history books than people’s hearts after his passing. That’s some nasty truth.

    • @mr.o8539
      @mr.o8539 3 года назад +1

      That's what you got from what he said? He does not care about whether he's in people's hearts. What he cared about was the well-being of the nation, he couldn't care less if he was in anyone's heart. And he knew he'd be in history books, he's not being arrogant, he's being his pragmatic self, I mean he IS the father of Singapore, arguably the most successful nation in Asia, how can he not be in history books? And people who were around when he ruled are dead or will be dead soon after he dies, so what does it matter whose heart he was in? Pragmatism.

    all you say is true...as mentioned that above..and that's the worry..like robots.. SIngaporeans are unable to "think".. I heard recently the boys need a book to show them how to chat-up a girl.. I also heard recently that the SQ pilots know the flight-manual 100%.. but are unable to cope with an incident that occurs outside the manual..my feeling is that we need to add a few more Indian genes into the Singapore.pool.... that might resolve several issues. The Indian-Chinese progeny is attractive!

    If elections were once every 5-6 years like sg, politicians would be more focused to produce good governance over popularity or money. More long term policies can be implemented. Same shit in Canada. Minority govt allows the opposition and incumbents to ignite an election cuz the polls r good. Westerners have to get over the concepts that frequent elections r part of democracy and dictatorship=bad and democracy=good in order to achieve good governance like Singapore.
