In this week’s episode, we discuss a powerful way to overcome everyday landscape photography problems. Out of all the tools, brushes and filters inside of Lightroom, there's one feature that I consistently hear is overlooked or rarely used for various different reasons. And, these reasons usually range from not being comfortable with how to apply it, or not being comfortable with the benefits of using it, or not knowing that it even exists. I did the exact same thing the first couple of years that I used Lightroom as well, but one things for certain, I now think this might be the most under appreciated tool in all of Lightroom. And, that's the purpose of this week's video, to discuss how you can improve your landscape photos with Split Toning.
In this video, I review what Split Toning is, how it works, the problems that it can solve, and how it can transform your landscape photos. There isn't many photo editing tools that I get this excited about, but I think split toning is one that's worth the high praise. There's many practical ways you can use split toning to solve common landscape photography problems and also multiple different ways you can get creative with it as well.
So the next time you encounter any of these common landscape photography issues, I hope you can use the information from this video to test out split toning on some of your landscape photos.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

What’s your most common landscape photography problem?
It was the white balance, because I always had a problem feeling that my photos are looking more yellow as they should or I mean as the scene was during taking the photo 😅
@@TheMoodyPhotographer I do the exact opposite where I always thing my photos are too blue or cold.
Hi Mark, thanks for the great explaination. The worst thing I have troubles with is some focusstacking. When you have a large distance between foreground and background and you can make any "between" shots because there is a gap between (like a ditch in the landscape) it is hard to create a good focusstack. There is a lot of noise/out of focus edges araound the edge of the "closeby-picture". I hope you understand what i meant. Maybe you can create some more in depth video about focusstacking and how to solve problems?
While not a problem, during this time of isolation I find myself thinking about the way I shoot, and how I can make changes to improve. Do you ever find yourself bracketing while focus stacking? In other words, bracket one area of focus, then move deeper into a photo, bracketing again, and so on? It certainly would be more work to blend each set of bracketed images, and then focus stack them. I wonder if it could make for a better photo, or if it would end up being an unrealistic HDR result.
As to your topic today... I've only recently started playing with split toning, and have really noticed the results. I too find that many of my shots end up on the cool end, especially in the shadows. Thanks again for another great video this week.
Me - taking the time to do it right - I believe I have an eye - but its much like my golf game - if I could just hit the ball straight I'd be good - I am learning from your videos
Great video Mark! Keep it up
Korey Hart Appreciate ya Korey!
Gotta say man, out of all the RUclips channels on photography I watch, yours is definitely the most in depth and informative! Keep it up you’re doing a really good job 👍
Steve Adams Thanks so much Steve!! Really appreciate this👍

Excellent video Mark, so well explained, thank you , is so easy to follow you man!
Juan Busciglio Photography Many thanks!!
Thank You so much for the explanation of Split Toning and how to use it PROPERLY!!! Also the lighting behind you the LED light is very white but the surface it shines on is most always blueish but if you look at it with your eyes it will be just a brighter surface. Kinda like a cloudy day having blueish surface but your eyes see just a dimming of light and a little greying (the brains conversion of what we see) the clouds are shades of grey but the camera sees shades of blue to purple. Great colors in your room by the way, would make a great cross stitch pattern and drive a tread chooser crazy.
Now I understand. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Bryan! Hope it was helpful!
Thank you very much!
You explain very clearly.
Many take good photos, but few can explain how they do it.

Excellent. I had no idea. Fun going back over older photos as we socially distance ourselves.
Thanks Brian - yep we all have a bit more time on our hands now.

Also I followed your thoughts on becoming a professional and make a living of your photgraphs. Good for you. I wish you all the bestfor the future and keep the content coming, it is highly appreciated. I do mostly underwater photography, but I can adopt a lot of your tips for my photos as well. Take care! Greetings from Norway!

Hi Mark, the best explanation and demonstration I have seen for split toning for something I have tried to understand. Armed with the knowledge you conveyed I can now start using this tool effectively. Thanks so much!
Vincent Lerie Hey Vincent! Happy to hear the video was helpful👍
I loved the purple sky with the orange sunset
Hi Mark, thanks a lot for this video. What I like most in your videos, that even if I´m not a native speaker, I fully understand your explainations. Your mix between theory and practical examples is very helpful and helps to transport it in my own pictures. Keep it up!!!
André Galle Thank you Andre!
Also my only unused edit tool in LR. Thanks for the clear instruction Mark. Just tried it on one of my images and now it will get the attention it deserves. Been using LR/PS for years and obviously still learning.
Gary Marshall Great to hear the video was helpful Gary!
Great tip! Thanks! 🔥
Mark Denny is the Bob Ross of post processing! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hahah! Thanks Mike!
Great video Mark. I NEVER used or understood Split tone before. This was a great way to wrap my head around it. Going to have to try it on some images from a trip last month.
Thank you! Glad the video was helpful!
Thanks for explaining split toning techniques in Lightroom. Really helps me to better understand this feature.
Always happy to do it Bob!
I like your videos. Another hidden option you just revealed for better landscapes, thank you so much. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much!
I never used split toning before. After I watched your video I tried it out on a shot that I took last night while "social distancing" at the park. It worked great. Thanks!!
Great video Mark! You really have a knack for explaining everything in a way that gets through to me! Thank!👊🏼

Jack Lowther Thank ya Jack! You do the same.
Many thanks, Mark .... very helpful!!!
Andrew McKinney Happy to hear it Andrew👍
Great explained Mark. And I have to give you praise for your calm way, which suits photography really well. It is also very unusual to visit such a relaxed channel on youtube nowadays where most things should be hyped and cool. Greetings from Sweden
Many thanks - I really appreciate it!
Very much enjoy your videos. Calm and easy to listen voice. Interesting content. You're great teacher.
Thanks so much David!
Thanks, Mark! Usually, I agree with you and your videos, and I take away something from them. But today I'm humbled, and I've learned something entirely new. I can't wait to apply these techniques to future edits, and even to re-edit some of my old favorites.
It’s such a fun technique to experiment with - hope you enjoy it!
I have always struggled with split toning....underatanding AND use. This simple demo and explanation goes a long way in showing how easy it is to use so I don't have to be afraid of using it. With all the free time at home i am going to pull out some older photos and try this out. Thanks Mark...I hope you and your family are safe and doing well!
Thanks so much Mickey! I hope the same for you and yours as well!
Mark - this is brilliant, thank you so much. You really cram so much knowledge into your videos in a concise way. Nothing feels like time wasting.
Thanks so much! I know everyone’s time is valuable so I try not to waste any of it.
Thank you for this! This is a fantastic tool to put in the PS bag!
MetlDOME Happy to do it!
Great tips, Mark. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Always inspiring.
Thanks so much Paulo!
Thank you for such a detailed explanation of the Split Toning tool. I’m in the pool of folks who don’t use it, but will use it going forward for sure. Stay well!
Thanks so much Adrienne! You do as well!
Split toning had been the one that I did not know how to manage soundly. But not anymore. Thanks for your easy to understand process of this tool. Now I have something else to keep me occupied during these isolation times
Hi Mark, another great video, before watching I had no idea how to use that tool, thank you so much.
Haven't finished the video yet ... looking forward to finally understanding split toning ... but I need to say ... "Custom Develop Panel" ... Mind blown!!! How wonderful is that?
Catherine B. Such a great hidden feature!
I tend to drop the blue slightly on my outdoor photos, but have never thought about using the split toning method. Good idea. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Dave!
Another door yourve opened for me thanks Mark - love how simply you explain things.
It like your white balancing the shadows and highlights seperately to taste - nicely done.
Thanks, Mark, I've never heard of spilt toning before, I will certainly look for it and try it out. Another great video!
Thanks so much Margaret!
Great tips Mark! I've dappled with split toning before but you really broke it down and explained it well. I have a much better understanding of it. Thanks!
Tommy Warrington Thanks for checking out the video Tommy!
I just want to thank you, Mark, for explaining LR in such a wonderfully comprehensive, yet fully understandable manner. I believe I have now watched all of your videos and thoroughly enjoy applying the concepts to both my current photos and revisits of older images (especially the latter in these times). Looking forward, as always, to your next post!
David E. Adams Thanks so much David! I really appreciate your support!
I keep saying that this is "your best yet" each time I watch one of your new productions. But this one was truly great for me. I had no idea that there was even a "split-toning" section. After you said to look at the various items on the right in the Develop module, I saw no "split-toning" at all. But when you said to right-click somewhere in the column, I did, and Whoa! A drop-down appeared that I never knew existed. I saw no "split-toning," but there was a "color-grading" item, so I clicked on it. Fantastic! Apparently, LR has changed the name in its later updates (I pay for the cloud version), and the rainbow of colors in three different circles, representing highlight, midtones and shadows looked to be much easier to use. I tried all three on an old photo of a sunrise that I had rated as a 1-star that I had destined for the trash heap because it was so "blah." Your word, "bland" was too good for it. But after playing with all three color circles, my old photo "popped!" I then went to the HSL section (don't ask me why I did that... just inquisitive, I guess... and the image was even enhanced for the better. I changed the 1-star to a 3-star, which for me I define as a "Keeper." But not a 4-star, which is a "portfolio" grade for me, but nevertheless, I could not believe that I had completely salvaged an image that I was about to delete. Many thanks, once again, Mark. I began watching for your new issues about four months ago, and now your videos are the first I look for every Wednesday.
Thank you so much. I am still very new to Lightroom and never knew what split toning actually did. Always just skipped over it when editing.
It’s a great tool! Glad to hear the video was useful!
These are really common problems, thank you for explaining how to solve these with completely unused tool in LR. So far I’ve used hue in HSL section, especially on sunsets.
Good feedback for the applied split toning as whole is switching the photo to black and white. It is not neutral grey scale anymore.
Great video, definitely an often overlooked menu. You mention trying to match a color in the scene; there's actually an easy (semi hidden) way to do this: select the color picker, then click down on any random color. While still holding the mouse button down, drag the color picker onto your photo to the color you want to match, then release the button. Presto, matched colors.
Fun fact, I think this works most (all?) places a color picker is used.
Great video, very helpful and well explained as usual. Cheers
Much appreciated!
Great video mark.. I must admit I always end up skipping over this.. I have never used it and to be honest have never even thought about using it. You’ve made it that little more user friendly.. thank you 👍🏻
Glad to hear it Stuart!
Thanks Mark! Another helpful tutorial. I think myself all the time, that I know Lightroom enough but as always you show me something that I never really use effectively before.
Great to hear this weeks video was helpful!
Fantastic explanation of split toning. I always knew it was a powerful tool, but never felt confident in the way I applied it to my images.
What a great topic, MarK. Have fooled around with split toning, but never quite understood how it worked. Should have looked it up, but you have again come to my rescue. You have to be the best finisher on channel. Thanks for the encouragement. Have a lot of old images that could serve as samples to work on. Looking forward to your next video. Bill.
Thanks Bill! Split Toning is great fun to play with on past photos - enjoy!
Thanks Mark. It made it easier to understand seeing you apply it on the images. I thought you had to do the opposite in the shadows to what you do in the highlights!!
Johan Hefer Oh no! You can do it any way you’d like!
Very good to explain split tone...can't wait to try it. Thanks
Bernard Saumier Thanks Bernard!
I like that your background is also split toned ☺
Thank you Mark, you have succeeded in making a clear explanation on Split Toning. I'm finally ready to use it. Sounds like a very powerful tool. Thanks, you're the best!
Great tutorial - thank you
BRAISY ONE Thanks so much!
Your videos and the way you speak are always so helpful, thank you! Gonna try that out right away :)
speakingthetruth Thanks so much - really appreciate it!
Great vid Mark! I love how you explain your topics... great job!
Many thanks Sarah! I really appreciate that:)
You're so right!! Split toning has always been one of those tools I've ignored. This really helped me to understand. Looking forward to trying split toning now. Thanks for this tutorial!!
Thanks so much for watching Melissa!
Great, thanks! Never saw the use of split-toning. Now it seems essential. Great vid.
Glad you enjoyed it👍
Another great video Mark. You are able to explain things clearly with a nice calm tone and feel
I rarely use split toning because it had always been presented to me as "a cool way to get that instagram filter look," and that's never really what I was looking for. Seeing you use it in a more utilitarian way and explain how to actually color correct without complicated masking has me adding it back into my toolbar! Thanks, Mark!
Same here! That’s what I used to think of it as well.
Excellent treatise on split-toning Mark! I’ve always just ignored it because I was clueless as to how it worked. Definitely something to keep in my mind going forward and also going back to previously edited images. Thank you!
Many thanks John!
Oooo baby that shot from Yosemite Valley is super dramatic. Love it!
Thanks so much Mackenzie!
I knew about split toning, but usually forget to use it! Per your suggestion, I went back to a "meh" photo that I really wanted to work but just wasn't. Tried the split toning and I think it actually is pretty good now! thanks!
This is great to hear!
Hey Mark! You got my subscription! I like how you are always straight on point and provide very useful tips and real world examples. You are an excellent content creator! I am new to Lightroom and photography but am very keen to learn more. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and now use a lot of what you have suggested. I feel you are much closer to us all when you show real life problems for photography and how to approach them, whilst most others just blab about tech. Thanks a ton and stay safe!
You can also do this in camera raw and it works well. I like to do this then open in photoshop and apply overlay blending and being careful with opacity settings. This can really bring back lost intensity in skies etc.
Big fan of using the split toning tool! Can really create some good style or more natural looking photos!
Great video. Can’t wait to try this tool that I never paid attention to before. Thank you!
Thanks so much Cristina!
the transition map was really helpful in understanding split toning, thanks! And you're getting so close to 100000!
Many thanks Paula! It’s crazy - I can’t believe it!
Thanks Mark, that was very useful way to explain split toning. I've been using the tool for a while but I enjoyed the way you explained, especially the last photo of Golden Gate Bridge. Thanks again
Adrian Rankin Thanks for checking out the video Adrian!
This is become my favorite upload every week!
That means a lot - thanks so much!
The penny dropped. I have always ignored this, having seen some info previously & could not understand. I like the way you do it, so simple just running the slider over the range of colours then just adjusting when you get the colour you want. Sometimes the colours in the Australian bush can bea bit uninteresting but this has made it so much easier for me to adjust. Thank you.
Glad to do it Donal and thanks to you for checking it out!
Thank you very much for the tip. I have always struggled with colors in my sunset images and try to fix this with curves adjustments and masking but this generally create hallows.
Great video, thanks Mark. Finally an explanation of Split Toning.
Thank you - I never knew exactly how to use this tool! I'm looking forward to going back to some photos in the past and try this out.
Thanks Mark! This speaks directly to issues I’m struggling with in my Norway photos. So much dynamic range!
Happy to do it!
Thanks. I’ve got a number of images to play with tonite.
Charles Oliver Hope it helps Charles!
Brilliant explanation of split toning - thank you.
Thanks Patrick! Glad you think so.
Thanks!
I've been working with split-toning with B&W long ago as I was trying to understand the relations between colors and "color schematics" and the visual or emotional effects for such colors. Then I started to use it in order to create a somewhat cinematic look (as you did in one of your videos a while ago). Now I think you provided the tip I was really looking for: choosing a color for the highlight from the scene itself. I was missing around with colors trying to figure it out completely by intuition and I wasn't convinced still. Thanks again!
Happy to hear it was helpful!
You should do an “editing your photos” part 2
Excellent job explaining this great tool.
Robert Thompson Thank you Robert!
I love split toning to add a certain look that isn't always natural, but gives me the mood or feeling that I'm looking for.
Definitely a fun tool to experiment with!
Good job Mark! I have been in the Blue Ridge a lot the last few weeks and this might really help a lot. I have been doing the bracketing and HDR on most everything, and I know there are some images that this will help a tremendous amount! Thanks a lot.
Thanks Joe! Glad to hear the video was helpful!
Great video! I’ve never fully understood how or why to use split-toning, but this definitely helped give me some perspective!
Much appreciated Nate!
Split toning is really important, I like to use on my fall images, and you are right, almost anybody talk about it. Good video as always Mark 👌
Thanks so much - glad you enjoyed it!
I love using split toning on just about all of my golden hour shots. Such a powerful tool and you presented it extremely well Mark. Great video as always!
Much appreciated Mike! It's a great tool to experiment with that's for sure!
