As a 40 year old man it is my duty to appear in the comments of every one of these videos to register my general approval about the return of Fantasy but let everyone know that THIS particular edition is inferior to the Warhammer Fantasy from back in my day. Without such things as Skaven, Kids These Days will never know the horror of having one of your warpfire thrower teams roll a misfire. As they explode in a column of pale green fire along with half of the nearby Stormvermin regiment, your horror turns to grudging amusement as they fail their break test and trigger a general rout. How else is this generation going to build character?
They may not be “officially “ supporting them. Now, but I reckon the third faction book we’ll see eventually , will be what’s going on in lustria. Dark Elves, shaven, lizards, possibly vampire counts using the almanac to push Sartosa… (wishful thinking but possible)

The flammable troll thing comes from 3 Hearts 3 Lions which is where D&D got their trolls from. In 3 Hearts 3 Lions its probably because fire represents purification and the Trolls were crratures of Chaos (3 Hearts 3 Lions is also the source of Lawful/Chaotic but Warhammer takes more from Micheal Moorcock's take on Chaos they even use his Chaos Star symbol)

Thanks for the video! I share your concern raised at the end of the video about the fighting rank. The first time they mentioned that rule I was like.... oh great we're now going to have a width "arms race", which is going to be really stupid.... and stupid-looking.
I don't want shooting to be too good, but it seems like shooting is so weak in this edition that it's not worth having. Why blow a bunch of points on archers or a cannon when you can just take more close combat units? Not a fan of the lack of 'step up'. I liked that in 8th edition. It (along with multiple ranks getting to fight) meant that regular troops actually got to do some damage rather than just being there to provide moral support. This seems to encourage stepping back to a time when most of the front rank was heroes and regular troops did next to nothing. I do like the redued negative mods to armour. Back in the day a 5+ save was basically useless. It's good that negatives to saves are not so ubiquitous now. Will have to give it a go to see for myself, though I may wait and see atm (not too bothered about Brets or TK). Hopefully it's a big hit :)
Because infantry charges 9-11 inches max. Even short bows can move 3-4 inches and then shoot 18". When infantry could charge on turn 2 with a 16" charge in 8th edition, yeah you could shoot in two ranks, but combat started SO fast. Now you'll have a few turns to actually shoot.
Can you give any insight as to how the legacy faction rules compare to those of the main factions? Are they as fleshed out (with magic items, unique spell lores, unique faction rules like Vampiric Powers) or are they more toned down and bland compared to Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes?
Sounds promising that the spells are good, but I cannot understand how the recent GW magic/psychic rules could be on anyone's top favourite magic system😂
I thought 8th magic core system was perfect other than the few nuke spells, the avoid miscast shenanigans and Skaven ignoring spell conventions (the latter two were a result of lazy army book writing). I loved the risk/reward, drawing out dispel dice, stacking spells on a single unit, setting up charges and waiting for a good WoM roll. Now it's a coin-flip as to whether a spell gets off or not, making it even more random and destroying the tactical nuance of magic. IMO.
@tyrannosaurus696 8th was preatty good, except for the spells themselves who was widely broken. 5th magic cards is my favourite so far. It has more focus on wacky fun instead of balance which I really miss from modern games.
Cant wait iv missed real warhammer so much i play 40k to but old school hammer was always my jam pulling out my old orks and getting the dust off them and my csm going in closet

I'm still confused about armor saves for mounted units. Rulebook states it caps at 2+, does barding contribute to armor saves like the old days? Is Full plate, shield barding a 2+ or is barding something else.
Barding contributes to saves, the mount itself does not. And from what I can tell, barding, shield and full plate is pretty rare, might only be Empire Knights and a select few characters
As far as I know both rules still exist, some units that had killing blow no longer have KB though they have a toned done version (ignores armour but not ward saves).
I played 6th and 7th, sounds like I didn’t miss much with 8th. Looking forward to this edition! I have my 2k High Elves (and Vampire Counts, grrrr) from the early aughts itching to try it out!
Oh boy this is a hell to calculate with the charge "clap in"... they should get rid of this - 52:40 min What happens when you barely reach the unit and cant clap in? is it a failed charge? Does the defender clap in?(that would be super bad) and in 8th you did use small units to redirect attackers, not totaly block the charge....(there was a method to do it but not why you did take them) Edit: the Troll regeneration comes fom dungeon and dragons, and it is a known weakness for trolls. Like sunlight for vampires. It is popculture now and a little homage to those things...
@@goatman9998 I've been playing Warhammer fantasy for more than 20 years and I've got some very bad memories of unkillable chaos lords on dragons that I would rather not see again.
I understand that fear. But aos and modern 40k has the oppodite issue where your general can easily get shot off the board turn 1. Which is depressing as hell if youbcare about the narrative at all @Alex-bc3gz
I jumped on to Conquest after trying 9th Age for a bit. I'm probably done with GW because they always have the same cycle. Every edition seem to start strong, but it becomes the previous edition soon enough. Meanwhile, Conquest has filled that gap. I don't regret one bit.
Do Lizardmen still have Cold Blooded as we're used to seeing it and can the Slann sit in the middle of Temple Guard? If not, does the Slann gain any bonus being near Temple Guard?
Someone needs to drop me a PDF of the Chaos Dwarf list. I’m trying to build an army ahead of time with Mantic models, so someone please help a brother out.
One thing i do like (correct me if im wrong) the book of fantasy contains all the army lists for the "Good Guys" etc. Im so happy they have done this as it takes a leaf out of Mantics book and will cut cost into getting into the game as there nothing worse then having to keep buying army books every 2 years. Mantic showed you dont need to do this and im happy GW are finally doing it.
I've just bought the books today so can't 100% say for sure, but I appreciate the fact that the journals seem to be a nice lore add to the army lists. Although if you want rules for special characters they appear to be in these books
It's a double-edged sword. The basic army lists are divided into other Forces of Fantasy or Ravening Hordes (which also means you're paying more money if you only play one army, or one army of each faction...you'll have to buy larger, more expensive books), BUT each army will also get an arcane journal which has more army lists, magic items, special characters, etc. So if you're a completionist, you're paying a lot more. But if you just want the basic rules to play with your models, you just need the main army book. I don't hate it, because I think supplementary rules are a good thing (GW makes money off those that want them, players that don't want to spend for them can still play the game), I just wish they would release those core army rules for free like 10th edition index rules (and KEEP them free).
Skaven not being in oldworld is a crime! Here is my story. Playing 2000 point game with my skaven vs my mates beastmen. Roll and i get first turn. The plague claw catapault lands a direct hit on a horde formation of around 50 beastigors with the expensive general and bsb. They're sitting next to the edge of the board. I cause a wound. Causes a panic check. He rolls double 6. Rerolls and gets... double 6 Runs off the board whoops... Skaven are fucking awesome 🐀
A lot of promising stuff for sure, but I'm still a little concerned how "herohammer" it will be tbh. A bit sceptical of the magic overall and to some extent missile fire, but a lot comes down to the point costs as well admittedly. Looks intriguing at least, which is good.
I was really surprised that they are more or less dusting off this 30 year old range and re-releasing it. I feel like a lot of people were assuming they were refreshing all of these ranges. But damn, this is like the most genius milking of old product they have ever done.
Am I right in saying that Swift Stride Charge is Movement + 2d6 (pick the highest) + D6? So potentially 20+ inch Charge moves? Seems crazy how far SS models move relative to infantry.
What's the verdict on unit sizes in The Old World, particularly for dwarfs? Are my blocks of 20 Ironbreakers/Hammerers/Slayers and 25 warriors/Longbeards going to be enough in this edition? I gather this new "the whole front row gets to attack" thing is the main new factor? I guess 5x4 units have the advantage of a larger buffer before you start losing rank bonuses. I could easily reach 7x3 sizes if that's the requirement for this edition but beyond that it starts to look pricey as I'd want matching 90s minis.
I love watching you guys! However, if I may, could you sometimes remember that not every viewer is an English native? Sometimes it's difficult to catch everything when listening in the background.
Im an ogre kingdoms player, can u guys give me your thoughts on 7 armies being sorta squatted. It seems like a huge f' you to half the community. Maybe im assuming incorrectly? Is that list going to get proper support or not. Them calling them legacy armies makes it seem like they want to kill off the coolest armies and keeping the most vanilla besides TK and chaos.
@@MountainMiniatures So you're saying legacy faction with be popular but not based on their own merit but just because the minis look better and people can double dip for both systems?
Okay, so i just wanna clarify, can a wizard situated behind a unit thats in combat buff that unit if its in his forward arc? Or does being in combat render that unit unbuffable? I get not casting if your wizard us engaged in combat, or he's staring off in the wrong direction.
I am kind of bummed they kind of excluded Lizardmen, Skaven, Vampire Counts, Dark Elves, Chaos Dwarfs and Orgres. I get they will get their stats one time but than they are discontinued will not be updated and so on. What do you guys think about it?
What are your thought on supporting attacks from the entire front rank? I'm seeing 40 strong unit of dwarf quarreler's or something like that in one big rank. i know movement will be a limiting factor i a unit that wide, but i don't want to charge that gunline...
@@grlmgor not any more, every unit in the front rank gets atleast 1 attack. (but no one in the 2nd rank unless specificly said so (spears, fight in extra rank, etc))

I played 6th and 7th, sounds like I didn’t miss much with 8th. Looking forward to this edition! I have my 2k High Elves (and Vampire Counts, grrrr) from the early aughts itching to try it out!
Oh boy this is a hell to calculate with the charge "clap in"... they should get rid of this - 52:40 min
What happens when you barely reach the unit and cant clap in? is it a failed charge? Does the defender clap in?(that would be super bad)
and in 8th you did use small units to redirect attackers, not totaly block the charge....(there was a method to do it but not why you did take them)
Edit: the Troll regeneration comes fom dungeon and dragons, and it is a known weakness for trolls. Like sunlight for vampires. It is popculture now and a little homage to those things...
Morning Star is a BRETONNIA thing.
Tomb Kings with Fails are very good
Hey Steve are you gonna post the Dark Elf vid for bers?
Right now the only things that still worries me about this edition is the fear that it will turn into another hero hammer.
Is that your fear? Or is that what you have heard from others who have not played anything and are just repeating what others voiced?
@@goatman9998 I've been playing Warhammer fantasy for more than 20 years and I've got some very bad memories of unkillable chaos lords on dragons that I would rather not see again.
I understand that fear. But aos and modern 40k has the oppodite issue where your general can easily get shot off the board turn 1. Which is depressing as hell if youbcare about the narrative at all

I jumped on to Conquest after trying 9th Age for a bit. I'm probably done with GW because they always have the same cycle. Every edition seem to start strong, but it becomes the previous edition soon enough. Meanwhile, Conquest has filled that gap. I don't regret one bit.
Conquest from Para Bellum Games?
kings of war bro. do it.
@@zachlong5427 Yup. Been playing for 3 years now. Honestly, it's been my favorite game.
Kings of War for me. Ironically they're both by Alessio Cavatore.
@@captainferrite I have an army of goblins for KoW. It's very similar to Hail Caesar imo. I'd be more interested if more people around played tbh.
Impact attacks going to clothy casters in the front row are going to shake things up.
all I need to know is, how are night goblins going to be ?!?!?
They are ok
They a small green and destructive. Dont worry about how they are going to be and have some fun
Do Lizardmen still have Cold Blooded as we're used to seeing it and can the Slann sit in the middle of Temple Guard? If not, does the Slann gain any bonus being near Temple Guard?
luka and math goes together like tuna and pizza
speaking of your Orcs.....how are they....i love them but they were rough in 8th. are they more competitive now?
animosity is gone!
@@chefboyardee2670 yep! And from what I can Syphon off Black orcs can achieve a 3+ armour save. And 1 unit count as core when you have a B-Orc general
Yeah they now have a frenzy lite ability. So a chance to charge units instead of squabbling/charging
@@Docktavion good ol' black Orc character sorts that's right out!
Yeah they have a anti squabbling rule like old. I can’t remember what it does but I’m guessing it’s like the old braking heads.
Rerolls and gets... double 6
Runs off the board whoops...
Skaven are fucking awesome 🐀
Can you please explain how removing casualities in close combat works?
I would think a flaming attack cauterizes the wound preventing the regeneration?
It was the same in 8th Ed : Roll 3d6 and discard lowest, which added to the mouvement could make some 22" charges.
@akulakorsun159 sorry I meant SS seems relatively very strong now that infantry only Charge 1d6 + Movement.
This sounds very very good, even though one of my army's are the core ones I'm still very excited now!
Just in general, have the points values gone up or down?
Some down, some the same, no more half a point
Negating rank bonus or disrupting ad you called it was based around US of unit attacking from the flank.
For all the horrific years of comments and Steve jokes… we love you dudes
I'm soooo excited to be along for the ride

oooo, so much fantasy vids, this should keep me busy.
What is the point cap for the old world armies to play?
Im an ogre kingdoms player, can u guys give me your thoughts on 7 armies being sorta squatted. It seems like a huge f' you to half the community. Maybe im assuming incorrectly? Is that list going to get proper support or not. Them calling them legacy armies makes it seem like they want to kill off the coolest armies and keeping the most vanilla besides TK and chaos.
You are assuming too much. i predict the 7 so called legacy armies' will be the most popular armies going forward.
Wait and see my dude.
My guess is that non GW events will allow the legacy armies
@@MountainMiniatures is that because they're OP?

can tomb kings use stand and shoot?
The big question for me is; are beastmen as weak as they have been in nearly every previous edition?
Good amount of views, but needs more likes!
Well the big problem with 40 wide units are that no one would want to play against that kind of player😉
@@grlmgor wouldn't all the kills for the attacks make up for the lost rank bonus?
@@grlmgor not any more, every unit in the front rank gets atleast 1 attack. (but no one in the 2nd rank unless specificly said so (spears, fight in extra rank, etc))
you would think seeing a monster or someone regenerate a nasty wound effect the attacker more that the monster lol.
Cool as always. 👍
WAP or Old World? That's the real question.
support Old World and maybe it will stick around
Support WAP and you'll have a good game free from the nonsense that is GW's way of handling games
@@nicholasg8623 "Give money to a bad thing so the bad thing continues to exist and take your money" lol
Old world for now. I love WAP. Been playing it for a while. But something being officially GW has an opportunity to grow a much larger community, which is what Warhammer is all about. Let's at least give it a chance. Down the road if things aren't going well, WAP will always be there.
@@curticusmaximus I agree, GW is a neccessary evil. we cannot have a large and healthy community in many stores if it not official. what can we do, its a privately owned ip and everything else even if its deemed "better" it is niche and obscured.
