Technics has been converting analog to digital for vinyl for a little while now, and I've been VERY impressed with the quality of the sound when they do it, so I don't think it's blasphemy at all.

Maybe this is a super niche market, but I certainly haven’t found many solutions like the Puffin (and now Wingwax) to apply DSP EQ and PEQ, coming directly from a vinyl cartridge source. Can’t help but think, if people can get past the digital factor, a dac phono stage could potentially be a real game changer for many. I just put in an order in for the Wingwax. Before I knew this existed I was looking at the WiiM Ultra, purely for it's phono dac and eq possibilities. Very happy I discovered the Wingwax. Seems like this will be far more tailored to what I'm looking for. Also don't want to run the risk of buying a device where this part is more of an afterthought. Have that concern even in higher price brackets.
I have one of these and it is great. Allowed me to use my DAC as a preamp to my tube amp in my dining room system, so nice and compact.

Purchased my Waxwing a couple of months ago and it is a keeper. I LOVE it!
Man, I fell in love quick, and hard... LOL
I owned one of these and its tube predecessor when I still had my analog rig. Great products. Shannon Parks is the owner and is super knowledgable and supportive. 1st class act. It's a great versatile little box you can use to tinker. My version had a digital output which I then fed wirelessly via bluetooth to a bluetooth receiver which in turn fed it to my dad of choice. With the tone controls, it kinda serves like a simplified Schiit Loki too. Lots of fun.
Very cool! We are having a fun time with this one. And look forward to getting the new version in for review as well. Looks like a really cool company.
I own this Puffin after meeting Shannon at Gig Harbor Audio 6 years ago. I was skeptical about the digital path but after comparing it to the Rega fono pre-amp that came with my P6, I stepped outside the box and trusted my ears. Over the years Shannon has been great with support including helping me with an early firmware update a few years ago. Just today, in fact, he answered a question for me related to the latest firmware version. I can't recommend this product enough.

@@abxaudiophiles The FONO MC from 2018 which came with the P6 as a bundle from Rega that year. This was before the Mk2 I believe. I ended up selling it.

Had a couple of Puffins, one with digital out, but ended up selling both and then purchasing a Waxwing. I use the optical out to a Topping D30 Pro and the audio is superb and completely noise free. I also use a Hagerman Cornet MM and Darlington Labs MP7 and the Waxwing runs right along side of them. The app is incredible, Shannon did a spectacular job developing this unit. It just worked right out of the box and I have no issues. This is a well thought out piece of gear with a fantastic tool set. App works great, very slick and straightforward. Highly recommend.

Yea, they seem to be a bit scarce.
The new Waxwing adds remote control of the settings, and a special notch filter, but the performance, amplifying hardware, DSP chip, and most features are identical to the Puffin It is not "Much improved," just a different control philosophy. It IS better for 78s, which is why I'll be buying the Waxwing, though I have the Puffin. And unlike the Puffin, the Waxwing includes the digital out at no extra cost. I use the Puffin's Coaxial out straight in to the computer for mastering records, no Multiple DA conversions or wacky sound cards. As Shannon is no longer making the Puffin, you would HAVE to buy the Waxwing to get the features described in the Puffin review.

The new one is supposed to be really cool, I reached out to them today to see if we can get it in for review!
Its not the DSP or converter chain that is critical - these we got pretty much nailed, no matter what R2R or DSD nuts have been telling us, its the cartridge loading and first stage preamp.

Digital out to dac is nice, but digital out to pc or nas.. is that an option too?
It appears to me that you can send the digital signal out to anything with a digital input. Sound like it may be possible to “rip” all your vinyl to digital catalogue. 🥰🥰😊😊

Their new one has an usb port, but it seems only to be for power. Not sure if it can be used after a firmware update or if it is wired just for power.
