      What are you trying to prove? Koreans have been playing the pipa since at least the 7th century (more than 1,300 years). Yanyue (banquet music) was a tradition shared between all three countries of East Asia, inherited from Central Asian roots. Additionally, Fang Jinlong's 5-string pipa does not comport with historical models.

    • @firefire1295
      @firefire1295 3 года назад +5

      @@dbadagna We all know how pipa came along the silk road from Middle east and how it developed in history. Korean's 5-string Pipa is called Xiangpipa, which is totally different from Fang's pipa and has been lost. Fang Jinlong's 5-string pipa is a new improved version which is only decades years old, so how can someone from South K take this new improved pipa ,which was designed by Man Ruixing and Fang Jinlong, and taught other people: " this is our traditional archaic instrument but it disappeared a while during wartime and just spreaded to China. Now we find it back" and " This is our unique pipa (point at Fang's 5-string pipa) which is different from Chinese 4-string pipa" ? As public figures and famous actors they should be responsible for what they say. At least they should restore their own Xiangpipa instead of passing it off as their own. Japan also has its own pipa, which is a wonderful symbol of culture diversity and culture blend. But cultural appropriation is unacceptable.

      @@dbadagna In addition, what needs to be corrected is that banquet music is the common tradition of the three East Asian countries, but it comes from China, not central Asia. Learn real knowledge

    • @dbadagna
      @dbadagna  3 года назад +1

      @@mariaswift6458 Native banquet music existed in China in the Han and Wei-Jin periods, but by the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and continuing through the Sui and Tang dynasties, Central Asia exerted a greater and greater influence over East Asian yanyue and daqu performance in terms of modes and music theory, repertoire, instrumentation, choreography, costume, and extramusical association. The yanyue of this period can be considered a blended tradition, though the Central Asian influence was undeniable, and, indeed, often overwhelmingly strong. Many of the titles of Tang-era melodies or dances, such as "Luntai"《輪臺》, "Sumozhe"《蘇莫者》, or "Hu Xuan"《胡旋》are actually transliterations of Central Asian place names or titles, and there are stories throughout the Tang body of literature describing the stellar musicianship of Kuchean master musicians and dancers resident in the Chinese capital.
      Further, numerous music masters of Central Asian origin (most of them from either Kucha or Sogdiana) held important positions in Chinese court musical institutions beginning in the Northern Dynasties period.
      Some of us study this history as our profession. It seems that the person speaking out of ignorance is you.

      Such tunings are documented in historical sources, but most musicians who play modern 5-string pipas don't have two of the strings doubling the same pitch.
      This konghou (with skin-covered soundbox) is fairly loud; I think it's just that the performer is playing very softly in this performance, as the accompanying instrument.

    How is this 5 String Pipa Tuned?

    • @dbadagna
      @dbadagna  4 года назад +2

      It sounds as if the upper four strings are tuned ADEA (from low to high), but Fang doesn't seem to make use of the fifth string at all in this performance. The tuning of his fifth string could probably be determined from scrutinizing other videos in which he plays this instrument, of which there should be several on RUclips. It's likely that the fifth string is pitched below the low A, and tuned to whichever pitch is most useful for the particular piece he's playing.

    • @dbadagna
      @dbadagna  4 года назад +2

      In this video (starting at 1 minute and 38 seconds), you can hear that Fang's fifth string is tuned to the E a fourth below the pipa's usual lowest A:

      My research indicates that the title 《绿野仙踪》 originated with the Qing-era novel, so I provided this historical background in the last paragraph of my video description. If you know more information about the piece performed in the video, I will add this information to the decription. Videos on Chinese websites are generally so poorly documented that little information can be determined about them, and such was the case as regards this video. I did state in the first paragraph of my video description that it was recorded by the dizi player Chen Yue, but Chen did not invent the title.

      Well, this is a modern 5-string pipa, with little relationship to the historic wuxian pipa. They are also playing a contemporary song in pop style. A true early music/historically informed performance movement is still in its earliest stages in China, with most musicians reluctant to use faithfully produced replicas of instruments used in earlier eras, or the techniques and manners of playing formerly used for those instruments.
