Rotating Equity Advocate Role Moon

  • The problem that I am addressing is that diversity, equity, and inclusion -- or DEI -- workplace training and change initiatives commonly yield scattered and uneven implementation efforts among employees because of ad hoc engagement with individuals at work in their roles. Typical employee DEI training explains the grand strategy and the justification for undertaking DEI work but glosses over the localized employee perspective of working these abstractions into their material role-based activities. In particular, what each individual does day-to-day that gives meaning to their institutional role and associated relations with others requires considered attention. One means to address this omission is to establish a team-based "equity advocate role" for which each member receives training to observe group process and to verify that work and decision-making are equitable and inclusive of diverse perspectives; this role rotates among every member of the workgroup.
