    This video contains:
👉🏻 Mirror Anamorphosis: this famous print by artist István Orosz has a hidden anamorphic image revealed by placing a mirrored cylinder over the depiction of the moon in the image.
👉🏻 Tesla’s Plasma Mug: this double walled glass mug glows orange from the excitation spectrum of neon gas at low pressure.
👉🏻 Magnetic Equilibrium Pen: a weighty and elegant writing pen dances on its tip when released, trapped against gravity by a magnetic field. A strong neodymium magnet in the base allows the pen to stand on its tip even when the base is tilted. A very nice design!
    👉🏻 The HoverPen @physicsfun
👉🏻 Twist Thermometer: when most substances heat up they expand in size- in a liquid thermometer the volume of the fluid increases with temperature and the level of the liquid surface indicates the calibrated temperature.
👉🏻 Transparent Conducting Film: a thin layer of indium tin oxide (1/1000000 meter thick) is transparent but can allow up to 15 mA of current to flow.
👉🏻 Hexagonal Lens Array: glass diffuser with hexagonal grid of lenses produces interesting pixelation and aliasing effects.
👉🏻 Complex Standing Waves on a String: two motors spin a string while illuminated by strobing LEDs allows investigation of the complexity of standing waves in a periodic system.
👉🏻 Iridescent Ferrofluid: the latest formulation of colloidal ferromagnetic liquid in a specially prepared water-alcohol suspension display cell.
    👉🏻 More Ferrofluid @physicsfun
👉🏻 Newton's Rings: the result of constructive and destructive interference of light waves when a convex lens is put in contact with a flat sheet of glass. This apparatus allows for compression of the two pieces of glass. Note that large pressure increases lead to distortions in the radial symmetry- the ring pattern can be used to check for slight defects when grinding/making lenses. Sir Isaac Newton is credited with formulating the correct equations to describe the spacing and thickness of the concentric lines of light and dark.
👉🏻 Piezoelectric PZT Cell: encased in acrylic is a cylinder of ceramic PZT material which when suddenly compressed generates more than 30kV allowing a spark to jump across a 1cm gap. This vintage 1970s demonstration (still available) uses a lever and cam mechanism to compress the piezo ceramic which is connected via conductors to the spark gap. The piezoelectric effect is the ability of certain materials to generate electric charge when deformed under mechanical stress. Lead (Pb) Zirconate Titanate (PZT) is the world’s most widely used for making sparks- you probably own a piece in your lighter wands or on your barbecue or stove where a spring mechanism is used to strike the piezo cell.
👉🏻 Tork Kinetic Sculpture: the motion of this 1975 vintage kinetic art may seem random at first, but it is actually three modes of motion combined in this coupled harmonic oscillator.

I bought a plasma / Tesla mug fifteen years ago and used it once. The novelty wore off. We need new inventions in this space.

    Challenge Answer
:- This happens because the bottom end has balanced forces acting upon it (gravity pulling it down and tension in the spring pulling it up).

Just extra thin copper. No truly transparent conductor here.

The bottom coil of the spring does not move until all of the coils above it have expanded. This is because the bottom coil is being held in place by the coils above it. The coils above it are pushing down on the bottom coil, and the bottom coil cannot move until the coils above it have released their tension.

  • @Benoit-Pierre
    @Benoit-Pierre Год назад +1

This challengr is difficult to phrase. Its been explained by many other channels.
    1. At microscopic scale it does move because of rapid waves inside item.
    2. At large scale, bottom is pulled up by the part immediately above. And so on. So must wait for upper part to physically touch before you can move.
    Veritasium and other explained it

Tension of the spring equals equivalent force from gravity.

when you stretched the spring you gave it energy which it expended before gravity took over

The lower end of the slinky doesn’t fall because the weight force and the elastic force cancel each other out.

From the release of the top end of the slinky, the mechanical wave has to reach the bottom before the gravitational potential energy of the lower portion is released. Until then, it is held at constant height by tension on the still accelerating top portion of the spring, while the top accelerates under a combination of gravity and spring tension.

Without science there is no human growth, no technological advances, no knowledge generation and the world stagnates. Science is knowledge and without an investment in science the world as we know it would not be possible. Without science the world would stop.
