Crown of Thorns Starfish Crisis - Take 2 In a few weeks, our science team is headed back to the Cook Islands, where we witnessed (and cleaned) a massive crown of thorns starfish outbreak while there on the Global Reef Expedition in 2013. We're headed back to see how the reefs have recovered from this voracious and incredibly fecund coral predator, survey the crown of thorns population on the reefs, and take dna samples of the starfish to see if we can identify where they came from and how they reached these remote reefs.
@@glennmatthews8323 It's not ok to be so stupid and not see what this would lead to, otherwise. Bases on your stupid logic, you shouldn't shoot a Kokodo Dragon trying to feed on a relative of yours, 'cause it's just... doing it naturally. Please. Stupid af.
One of the most common natural disturbances we observed on the Global Reef Expedition was the outbreak of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS). These voracious coral predators can completely consume the coral on a reef. The reef ecosystem can take decades to recover from this type of disturbance. COTS outbreaks have been linked to pollution and overharvesting of its top predators, allowing these animals to multiply into unmanageable numbers. The venomous thorn-like spines that protect this starfish are the least of our problems - this species is destroying coral reefs in many parts of the world due to an imbalance in the oceans - find out more in this video from the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. ruclips.net/video/-ardrFZuFkU/видео.html
I'm sorry, but i'm not really good in english, so i did not understood, why the starfish died in fresh water. could somebody write down what they said as an answer so i can translate it? That would be very helpful Thank you, for that informative video!

Deadly Starfish Eats Coral The venomous thorn-like spines that protect this starfish are the least of our problems - this species is destroying coral reefs in many parts of the world due to an imbalance in the oceans.
Yesterday i went to the sea and this thing were just at the start of the shore..my mom told me to see what is it...i took a stick and touch it...i found that it was not venomous nothing at all...i held it on my hands...it started walking too..i did not bother! Today my mum were watching some videos on youtube and she saw that it was the toxic starfish that i held on my hand dudeeee😭😭😭😭😭had i known i would have never ever touch it
Now that our BIOT mission has wrapped up, you may be wondering what we are doing next. Next week, our science team will be headed back to the Cook Islands to study the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish, a voracious coral predator.
Good eye! But in this video those are COTS scars, which do look a lot like bleaching. The white patches in this video are from from where crown-of-thorns starfish ate all of the living coral polyps, leaving only the white calcium-carbonate coral skeleton behind. Bleaching also turns the coral white when the corals loose their zooxanthellae, the single-celled algae that live inside the coral, and if the coral polyps die. Once the corals are dead it's hard to tell the difference, but COTS scars tend to occur in patches (a trail of death-by-starfish), while bleaching trends to affect similar kinds of coral across the reef.
@@LivingOceansFoundation woah thanks for clearing that up! I've learned about zooxanthellae and the crown of thorns starfish in Biology, and I was kind of concerned :)
harlequin shrimp. all they eat is starfish. and 1 of these tiny shrimp will eat one of these starfish a week. and these shrimp are indeed tiny. they will take arms off and let the starfish live if there is not a big enough population. but if the starfish population is big enough. harlequin shrimp will destroy them. just sayin
Yeah, and wolves are deadly too. We saw the adverse cascade effect removing them had on ecosystems, why repeat that? Wishfully the "villainous" COTS were relocated, but this report says they were simply killed....
pikapals41 Crown of Thorns are an invasive species of starfish to the area the video focuses on; because of that their natural predators are relatively few. This allows them to outpopulate the local species, preying on other organisms that haven’t adapted to their presence, and endanger the biodiversity of the region
The crown of thorns comes from the bible when Jesus died they placed it on his head which punctured his head and made his head bleed. So he died on the cross but then rose again after 3 days.Do you guys see the similarities 😇 -ten year old Isabelle
If you don't get it think about it this way Jesus is the beautiful coral and the crown is the starfish. The pain and the crown (the starfish) killed Jesus (the coral). But then after three days (decades for the coral) Jesus rose again (the coral reef healed after a few decades). Even though the star is like the pain and the thorny crown I still think this is a cool type of starfish even if the starfish can wipe out a whole species if it's not stopped.God bless you 😇👼👑Bye! -Isabelle

what would happen if you accidentally walk on this cots? are there any special medical treatment? is this deadly to humans? thank you.
Is there no way to engineer a kind of coral that has a faster regeneration process through DNA or some other genetic alteration?

I am here from Octonauts, Great Barrier Reef .
So a Toxapex's predator is a Toady Bloyster?
Bruxish as well.
I read somewhere, if you bag them up they get stressed and release their eggs as fast as within 10 seconds is that correct?
