I'm so glad I found this at the very beginning of my study of the Thai language. Tonal languages are daunting to people coming from a non-tonal language, but as you explained so well, no language is non-tonal, including English, it's just a matter of drawing the right comparisons.

Best explanation I've yet seen. You have a gift for teaching. I lived in Lao for five years and picked up the tones through repetition. What a slog! This would have made it much easier. Were you brought up bilingual?

This is THE BEST explanation I have seen.
The one problem is the "names" of the tones. The "rising" tone is in fact a dipping tone, down and then up. To most people, "rising" means going up, not going down and then up. The "falling" tone is really up and then down, like a roller coaster. An easier way to identify these for students would be to choose a numbering system or something used in standard dictionaries (that use English letters), and call them by that name. That is how people will encounter them. The names of these tones might be necessary, but they are confusing.
However, YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER!!

To me, Thai tones and Lao tones are much harder to master than Vietnamese tones.
It requires a lot of listening and repeating.
Not to mention that Thai script is also difficult to learn.
