Don't let your BMW 6-Series die this Winter!

- There's nothing more miserable than having all sorts of electrical problems such as TRANS FAIL-SAFE PROG appearing on the i-drive as the temperatures start to plummet.. But keeping the BMW 6-Series battery in top form isn't straight-forward.
You mustn't charge the BMW 6-Series (and 7-Series) from anywhere other than under the bonnet (hood) as it confuses the Intelligent Battery System - but you CAN if you use this method.
The plan is to use an intelligent battery charger connected in such a way as to incorporate the IBS into the charge circuit. I have had this system fitted for over four years and it all works very well.
I used this charger: amzn.to/2MrsUIW
Not only does it work well it appears that the fuse tray was designed so that the charger fits perfectly.
Just installed mine today. What a sweet set-up. Easy install. Thank you Timm as I have learned so much from you!
It's a good fix - that hole is the perfect size!
Hi Mate from Tennessee! Memphis that is. I have a 645ci and I'm learning everyday about the car. We recently had a lot of snow and couldn't drive the 645 because of the 8 inches of the white stuff. I was worried about the battery running down so I followed your advise and hooked it up the same way. Seems to be doing brilliant as you showed. No related.... I didn't know there are drains running down the sides of the windshield! But I ordered the weather strip conditioner you suggested as well and will get that worked on soon as well. Thanks again. The queen and I maybe crossing the big creek here soon to visit London. Hopefully I can buy you a pint or two. I owe you. Thanks again.
Thanks Brian, and great to hear from you - sounds like you are doing all the right things!
Hi Timm! Made great use of this video today. My car was sitting 17 days and battery discharged. Thanks a lot!
Glad it helped!
Another great video; thanks for sharing. I also use the well respected ctek charger but I connect via the +terminal and -terminal directly under the front bonnet (ie 'jumpstarting terminals as mentioned in owners manual). Just a message to all other car owners.... If you need a smart battery charger for your oldskool, classic, normal or performance car then I would definitely look no further than a CTEK battery charger. Keep thease informative posts coming Timm👏👌👍
Thanks! Yes, I have two Ctek units, one for the 650i and one for the dual-battery 840ci - and they have been faultless in both.
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I'm putting my car in storage and from the comment above, it seems that using the connections in the engine compartment is fine?
@@stevewilke3752 Yes, that will be fine!
I bought one myself Tim. Cracking piece of kit especially when I have a drain which I cannot find. And it’s not the battery.
You will have to watch my video on battery drain then!
Could you connect a 12v solar charger in the same way? Red to positive terminal and black to the chassis? I don't have access to an outdoor socket where I park.
Unless you live in California then a solar panel will be in use - even in SoCal it will hardly do anything
Hi Timm. Thanks for your very informative videos/website - I've referred to your stuff on more than one occasion for my own E64 650i. Have a question, if you don't mind - my 6 has a solar charger plugged into the OBD port. Car goes a week, sometimes 2, without being used. Having watched this video, would you say that use of the solar charger is not ideal? I'm thinking that it's probably pumping in such little charge that it shouldn't have any IBS implications, but not so sure! Cheers
Hello! A Solar Charger (unless as big as the roof and fitted to the outside of the car) will make no discernible difference - if you managed to get a few hundred milliamps out I would be impressed! No Solar Charger that is fitted inside the car will help one jot I'm afraid.....
Hi Tim great video. I just bought a 2005 645. Talking with the guy who owned it before he said he always had problems when he trickle charged under the bonnet. Do you think this had to do with the IBS? If so would you recommend this set up. I'm preparing to store this car for the winter and im worried of massive drainage.
Hi mate! I want to buy a prefacelift e65, which one would be better 3.0d 218hp or the 745i? From what country do you sugest is better to buy? I guess cars from portugal and spain are better because they have not been used in cold weather. Or is it better to buy from austria, germany or france?
I would avoid an early 745i because of engine problems on the V8 - apart from that I have no experience of the E65!
Buy a fabric car cover for about £30 saves the canvas roof. I use mine all year round.
The problem I have always had with covers is what to do with them when it's pouring down in the morning when I need to use the car!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Good point it only works on your 'fine weather' car -)
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation agreed its for fine weather/weekend cars only Timm
Random kind of off subject question... what’s the part number for the daytime running lights you have on your 650i? I noticed in your intro video the DRLs look like LED, and would like to do the same to my car.
Yes, they are LED's, I discuss it all on meeknet here: meeknet.co.uk/e64/BMW_E63_E64_White_Halo_Lights.htm
Available here: amzn.to/35w8zJ4
Hi Timm, thank you for the video, I to have the CTEK battery charger, which I use on the E38 1999 740il, but I just hook it to the terminals.. Might I ask you in your opinion is that ok for my model, or like you should I go POS to TERMINAL and NEG to chassis earth . Thank you for your vidioes, always great to watch. Cheers.
You can connect a battery conditioner directly to the battery on the earlier models - no IBS to worry about!
Every time I leave mine on trickle, I’ve had problems ,,,
Make sure you connect the negative lead to the chassis and not the battery
Yes - messing with the IBS could well give you IBS. 💩
