I'm in NJ zone 7 and I'm watching learning. For cold waves maybe frost cloth might help? I like idea of putting the tropical plants in bathroom. Would growing chayote on a wheeled garden bed work? Since it's a key ingredient for the beloved Filipino chicken soup Tinola ng Manok I'm in rapt attention.

Yes, frost cloth covering would help duirng a cold snap, but won't protect the plantnfrom extended freezing temperature. A heated greenhouse would help.
