Genius and Madness-Many of the most recognized geniuses in history suffered from some sort of mental illness. Is there a link between creativity and mental illness? What do we currently understand about any connection?
Renowned psychoanalyst, author and "TODAY" show contributor Dr. Gail Saltz explores this topic with: Dean Keith Simonton, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Davis, who has devoted 40 years to the scientific study of genius, creativity and leadership; James C. Kaufman, Professor of Educational Psychology at the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, and the author/editor of more than 30 books; and Sylvia Nasar, former economics correspondent at The New York Times and the author of A Beautiful Mind.

I would argue that David Foster Wallace had bipolar 2, medicated (wrongly?) with an antidepressant, which left him in a near-constant hypomanic state. He suffered from recurrent depressions, but while medicated, could write for hours on end, expressing incredibly complicated thoughts almost to the point of nauseam. He had trouble knowing when to stop; each thought leading to infinite possibilities.

The Darwin thing, I mean come on his whole thing was that we evolved from fish, then the dominant species kills the weaker species, and within the species they fight and kill each other to establish dominance. He was fully in touch with the cannibal reality of the world. If that doesn't create anxiety I don't know what does. I don't think it's intelligence at all necessarily, it's curiosity killing the cat. You get to the bottom of it all and it's fucking horrifying. It's just a dream though, so thank you Einstein. That's why Einstein was there sitting on the rocks enjoying the ocean breeze, because of the CONTENT of his thoughts. Not the FORM of fast thinking and learning.

Also, the purpose of diagnosing someone with a mental illness is - exactly as it sounds. To be blunt, there's a sickness in you (creating demand), and we can help you (Supply). Yes life hurts, it's horrible - but that industry turns it around. Life is Wonderful! It's 'supposed to be wonderful'! It's You who have the 'sickness' the "mental illness", that's why you're thinking these thoughts which I will never, ever mention. I actually, legally, can never mention these thoughts that are driving everyone insane. I can't mention the police state, no no. Perpetual war? A figment of your imagination. Racial inequality? Living in the past ladies and gentlemen, because it's been so so long since that happened. Uphold the status quo no matter how insane it is.
Gas lighting as an industry. Brilliant, hat's off. What happens behind the scenes in mental health administration, is that they charge you for every 'service'. The original service, where you find out thankfully that all of your thoughts are insane, then the ongoing services, which you will need for the rest of your life. These will not only undermine your trust in your own self, your own mind (which isn't always a bad thing, I'm serious), but they will undermine your self esteem. The stigma is the demand, because the family created it. Renegotiating your mental subservience and establishing a scapegoat for your disagreeing with things - your "mental illness", so you can once again find the serotonin supply you lost by your disagreeableness and sadness. Is everyone around you extremely proud of themselves and their choices, although their belief in their specialness excludes pride and imposes shame on most of the world? And you really can't see why that is? That's a mental illness. By never discussing content, never discussing what the ideas are that you're having, and only framing them in terms of your "disagreeableness" and consequent exile from your particular group, is the way that they make money. They're there, to professionally reconcile you, and convince you that you're insane and the way things are is correct. If you agree to this, you are losing a negotiation with your family basically, and the state. Your mind has to be surrendered, in turn you will always have low self esteem and never feel your real power to change things, that's the point. All of that empathy is weakening, it get's you to believe you're weak minded and sick and you need help - when you might actually be right. After that they'll "help" you. By shoving the same nonsensical shit down your throat until the day you die. The way the re integrate you with others, is to put the blame outside of you, as if you're suffering from your 'ideas' and not creating them. That way your family and friends can 'forgive you', by placing blame elsewhere, for your disagreeing with them and in the extreme going apeshit, because you are "mentally ill" and not acting on a conviction of your own, but acting out of a weakness that you have mentally. So, say goodbye to your ideals if you have them, you're going to have to backtrack. Every time you say something disagreeable from now on, or assert yourself as a normal person should, ever, "it's not you, it's your 'mental illness'" wink wink, that's another way to shut you up forever. People are malleable, so you'll be agreeing that you should just be quiet at that point. Don't let this happen. Feel your strength, don't be mean to people who are delusional, but don't give up your sovereignty to post graduate students for God's sake! Except probably substance abuse, if you're physically addicted to the point that you are done. I'm not trying to underestimate the power and the value of family, even if they're fucked up.
Psychiatrists: If you refuse to pay them, they'll be unemployed, they'll be poor - which is illegal - for shame, instead of you. You can devote your mental powers to getting money, then, you can create a change in people's thinking once you've learned how. Until you have the money though, a piece of advice, keep quiet a little. Don't underestimate people's attachment to their special status.
This is dollars and cents folks, and TAX dollars - which is the most powerful kind of money, because it's mandated to be spent. It's genius. Life is tough, it's killer in fact. That's a fact. Life is pain, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. But it's actually an illusion, thank you again Einstein for your beautiful free thoughts. Nothing personal toward the panelists of course, I really enjoyed the panel.

The lady who said “I’m sure lots of people here have an IQ of 156” is a little too confident for a person who doesn’t understand how IQ and standard deviations work.

I tend to believe what was being said on stage about artists and drug use, that drugs would have a negative effect on creativity, at least in the long run. But there is always that one story: The one musician who had a MARKED drop in brilliance when he got clean was Eric Clapton. layla --> wonderful tonight = ouch.

I think our brains just weren't meant to function on that high of a level for long. And when our brains over-function in one area, they have to under-function in another. Someone could be a mathematical 'genius', but can barely take care of themselves. Or, they can break down and compose beautiful, complex music, but are crippled socially.
My perspective on this changed when I had a brain injury. I'm no genius, but I was able to think in a very creative, abstract way that I never could before, at a time in my recovery where my mental health and function in other areas was abysmal. It's own kind of balance.

Imo, psychopats are often people who's capabilities are very developed. They are very analytical, mathematical to compensate the lack of empaty and still dominate. As well as people with ocd, they are good with details. Narcissist are good with people, seduction, looking good and having, getting power. As well as paroids who often are high ranked in millitary or politicians... they even get to rule countries (and start worldwars based on ''superiority'') bipolar and shizotype people are more sensible, therefore usually end up being the greatest artists. And my favourite kind of people. The histrionic are good actors. And to talk again about ocb, it is linked with high iq, and I think it's intelligence combined with depression. Of course, you can mix it up and some people will become something else of what they're kind of intelligence and they're imbalance is usually seen. So, imbalance I think is a key word. Because if you have a lot of something it seems logical that you'll miss something on the other side. I don't know if I'm repeating some of the ideas in this video. I was at 10-20 minutes in and thinkig ''fuck! They are just scratching the surface''. I'm not a psychology graduate. A actually don't have a degree. But these are some of my conclusions about the topic. Sinces there's not just one kind of intelligence. Food for thought I hope. I hope that you're a genius and are able to live in society, witch can be a jalous bitch. You're not crazy if you're better ;)

I miss the days when society had fascinating discussions about stuff that mattered, subjects like genius and mental illness, instead of obsessing over race about everything.

The woman on the left isn't be bright herself. "An IQ of 156 isn't that usually. Many in this room have it" paraphrased a little from the lady on the left. It's very usual. It's unfortunately a rarity to be a genius, this world would be so much better if we had many more intelligent people, both in the sciences and the arts and even both would be them working together. Maybe I'm wrong about the lady on the left. Maybe she's so intelligent that she just assumes everyone else is.
