Not the best, but great.
A unique drummer : Hal Blaine 🎼
There’s no such thing as “BEST drum solo” in the world of percussive music! Every musicians is unique in their own write 🙂
As a drummer myself you took the words right out of my mouth you 100% spot on with that comment
Exactly. It’s not a competition.
Right !
It’s “right” ya buzz kill. 🤨🤣
Absolutely correct... I can name 100 solos just as good, in their own right... All a matter of taste, perspective, style, genre and feeling at the time
I was a spectator at a Guitar Center Drum Off competition held in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. I saw Sonny Emory tearing it up back then as a young 19 year old contestant. In fact, he won the event that day. Nice to see Sonny is still killing it many years later. Just a phenomenal drummer.
He toured with Eric Clapton last year, my wife and i saw that show at LCA in Detroit. He's an absolutely amazing drummer.
There are videos of KIDS playing better than this.
That long single-stroke roll on the snare alone was worth the price of admission...so so good.
And yet it was free! Thank goodness for RUclips
Yep - that's a man at the top of his craft. Born to have those sticks in his hands - just so natural. Amazing.
Who cares about 'Best' ? It's not a race and there's no timer. This guy is a beast and I'm a fan
Exactly!! Total beast.
Thank you 🙏🏾
@@magiq9 Great comment! I agree with you 100%!
Truly, who cares about the "best". The drummer is simply "out-of-this-world" with the drums. I had to watch him three times and sometimes, I had to rewind to see him again. That's real talent indeed.
@@tomdac peter chris is the best
I wouldn't say that this is the greatest drum solo of all time. This is most definitely a brilliant display of drumming technique without a doubt. For a "best" you need context! This show just doesn't have that perfect storm of circumstances that you would need to have a "best" label slapped on it.
Very good drum solo. Never seen a drummer spin the sticks so fast while hitting the cymbals.
Very melodic, very rhythmic and flowing. A pleasure to listen to. 👍
Who cares about the video's title....where are your brains at? My ears and eyes are 100% with Emory's ferocious and melodic drum solo. Totally cool and humble guy if you've ever seen him speak. A fire ball of groove and chops!
Listen to buddy rich!
The French roles were amazing!
Exactly... people caught up with the title are missing the point of not only the video performance but,the title of the video itself.😁

FANTASTIC!!!!
DRUMMERS ARE MOST DEFINITELY A UNIQUE SPECIMEN.
I have been a LIFETIME fan of Sonny's. My first experience was a Drum Clinic/Wagstaff Music/ Salt Lake City about 40 years ago.
A True Classy gentleman who took time afterwards to listen to my questions. Such a great human being in every way.
(Im still gigging at age 70)
Sonny Emory is not only a beast, but the most musical drummer I've ever heard. Sonny, Dave Weckl, and Vinny Colaiuta are tops for me.
I'm with you on this one. I was thinking Weckl and forgot about Colaiuta until I read your comment. Seems like they're all cut from a similar cloth, although Weckl has such a smooth way of playing and endlessly tasteful ideas.
@@wigstretchWeckl is the king of the 3 with Latin. My drum teacher is like so pro Vinny over anybody. He doesn’t really I think anyone can touch Vinny or Dennis. Dennis played so amazingly with P Funk at such a young age and picked up so much from Tony, Billy, Diamond from Ohio Players, and Buddy Rich before he was even in P Funk and then went onto DESTROY those grooves. Dave for me takes the cake with Latin over Vinny. Everybody seems to disregard Steve Smith as well. He came out of that same school as a Weckl and Vinnie. He was at Berklee with Vinnie. Steve plays Buddy Rich snare drum chops while doing drum tricks better than all of them in my opinion. Vinny is like a God of course when it comes to his left hand and grooving but they ALL took from GADD. He was one kind of drummer and then heard Idris Muhammad, David Garibaldi and Airto as well as Chick Corea’s approach to drums and then rewrote what was being played… Sonny though? My god, criminally underrated just like Virgil.
Man you ran down the whole crew of great drummers. I love all of them with their own unique styles. Steve Smith is incredible and sort of forgotten about. I used to play weddings with Chuck Bergeron, who also was playing with the Buddy Rich big band on occasion. I went to see a tribute to Buddy Rich, and to see Chuck;. They featured Gadd, Colaiuta and Weckl together. Out of the three , they let Gadd start the groove. Nobody lays it down like Gadd. It set the stage for those three great players to show their stuff. Morello, Bellson and a number of others performed as well. This was back in the 80"s.@@williamperri3437
The rock and jazz-rock fusion genre has opened up a broader range for drummers and what they're doing now is absolutely amazing. This is GRAND.
Who ever mixed those drums deserves a medal.
There is no "best" drum solo in the world. There are so many super drummers, male and female, and S.E. is of course a very good one. Each of the good drummers has developed his or her own special language on the drums, and that is what makes them interesting and good.
Very well thought out response.

Finally someone with some sense. Thank you
I agree Robert. Well put. But we both watched it, didn't we?
He is the former drummer of Earth Wind & Fire
That's artistry right there, his solo is technical yet still very musical!
As a former drummer myself, I knew this was gonna be click-bait, bcuz there IS no BEST soloing in the world. I've heard great solos...I've PLAYED great solos, but no one...NO ONE... can lay claim to having heard or played the best solo ever. There are too many intangibles to consider. Just enjoy what we do.

This guys control, dynamics, technique, phrasing and expression is like a conversation. He has something to tell us and speaks well.
He brought the drums and symbols alive. Like they were breathing with the drummer.
I think he's excellent! It's not about how fast you play or beats per minute,it's about nuance,it's about how effortlessly he expresses himself on the drums, it's how he brings it all together to make musical sense and above all how he makes it entertaining!
How does a human being get so great that it defies even willing appreciation? Craftsmanship and genius.
Now THIS IS HOW A MASTER MAKES A DRUM SET SPEAK....SIR...I. SALUTE YOU....you get the horns..throw em up...THROW EM UP....\M/💯
This must be the granddaddy of all drum solos.......Sonny is awesome....his theatrics twirling sticks is another show in itself.........32,000 likes and not one single dislike...........

I was introduced to Sonny when playing with the Noisemakers and met him briefly after a show. Incredibly talented and a great dude.

I remember listening to Sonny who was playing across the hall in the GA State University Jazz Band when I was taking private drum lessons from Jack Bell. I stopped in the middle of my lesson and asked "GOOD NIGHT, WHO IS THAT DRUMMER!" In which Jack replied, "That's Sonny Emory."
It was hard to go on playing after that day. Great Job Sonny!
Mm ct
I love Sonny’s effortless demeanor as he presents his superior skill set.
what i love about this is that during the solo sections. the band comped and followed Sonny as Sonny does for them in the tunes. a reversal and extremely rare when presented this way. these guys all have magnificient ears.
Sonny is the best drummer I have seen in my lifetime. Why am I seeing him for the first time now? I am now a follower. He deserved recognition for his amazing talent!
Watch Buddy Rich, The Impossible Drum Solo
Atlanta's own Sonny Emory!! He's a BAD MAN!!!
I had the pleasure of growing up in Atlanta across the street from Sonny and the Emory family, all great musicians. I would hear him practicing when we were junior high and high school students. What a joy to see this video. I recall seeing him play with EW&F. Incredible!!!!
Mind blowing and amazing but still to this day with 57 years on this planet behind me I have never seen/heard anyone play the drums as well as Buddy Rich.
Umm... what about Animal?
John Bonham from led zeppelin a close second I think
After all these years and all these drummers, Buddy Rich is still "The Goat".
Ooooo this dude has such variety! Love it. It’s like his drumset is his playground, that’s how it’s supposed to be!
Professionalism
So many amazingly talented drummers out there it's sort of naive to claim any one solo as "The best". They're all the best at their particular style. He's awesome for sure. Same goes for any talented musician, no matter the instrument.
As far as drum solos go, this one has much more of an afro cuban back bone to it than anything else I've seen. Which definitely makes this guy a rare breed. He also kept the phrasing length and pattern for the preceding melody through out a majority of it.
@@jeffmiller9926 I agree but when i see Gergo Borlai i'm more excited .
@@jeffmiller9926 Sounds like he took lessons from Billy Cobham
@Jeff Miller not quite. There’s an afro cuban section to the solo, but it doesn’t run throughout. The sections are mapped out specifically…
One of THE reasons I love jazz/fusion is the solos, not JUST the drums either. But, being a drummer, I'm kind of biased. Thing is, when you have these world-class musicians, everything sounds just RIGHT. :3
Guy is amazingly talented like beyond belief but I found it totally show boaty and sonicly unenjoyable.
He used to play this exact solo when he was in Earth, Wind and Fire. Great back then and still awesome now.
Sonny is a phenomenal drummer. His contrasting rhythms are to die for. If you are any kind of a percussionist like me you see this man as the god of drumming. Please hit "Like"

Cheers to that bassist for being as steady as palace guard. Awesome grooving.
Yes indeed!
What an amazing player, just beautiful feel, ideas, showmanship and a monster groove player. Love Sonny!! One of the greats!
Great and Solid Drummer. His Timing and Technique is Exquisite. He definitely is a Studied Drummer. Love his Drumming.
Any drummer that uses the cowbell in their solo gets an instant thumbs up from me.
Neal peart would be proud !!! That band is amazing !!!
People forget that drumming is about technique timing and skill, nobody paints the same way. Call it difference if you may not best, best has nothing to with it. From Sonny Emory to Neil Peart to Buddy Rich each present technique timing and skill. When that's achieved consider yourself "accomplished" and perhaps ONE of the best!! Sonny Emory can stand tall.
Very good drum solo but not Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, John Bonham etc.
Absolute SAVAGE player. Love EVERY minute of this.
That dude is AN ARTIST! ...and the way the bassist played on and off of him during it was spectacular!
WOW, Absolutely FANTABULOUS.......!!!!

Love the solo. Hate the click-baity title.
51 years ago on July 21st if my memory is correct.
Always gotta have someone making negative judgements. If Mr. Kizola thinks that this is the best that he has ever heard, perhaps you add upon his praises of Sonny?
Why not simply say that if "Rovie liked this solo" then he would probably also like some other drum solo that you hold in the "HIGHEST of REGARDS" (so he can grow) ??
Agreed
Great solo, but Rovie needs to see some Buddy Rich
The title is what drew me in.
Well let’s just say I forgot there was guitar playing in there for a while!! Drums were mesmerising!!
Sonny is the best drummer I have seen in my lifetime, why am I seeing him for first time now? And I am a senior. I will be a follower from now on.
Never heard of Sonny Emory. Glad I checked this out! The cat is awesome!
He covered varied styles in that timeframe... Very dynamic indeed.
When he is good, he is good, never seen anyone soo talented
Was für tolle Musik! Danke!
Arguably. There were a couple others like John Blackwell Jr. RIP; and Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett... who was MJ's drummer now playing for Cameo. 👍🏼
Furthest from me is the idea of launching a Peat vs Rich vs whoever is your favourite drummer (FWIW Emory is one of my personal favourites along with Simon Phillips. But objectively speaking big prospects attracts big drummers, and big fame bring in big in a large fanbase. This here solo is pretty damn good but I wouldn't call it the best in the world. Speaking of best in the world have you noticed Emory's homage (voluntary or not) to Neil Peart (RIP). I'm talking about the "majorette stick flip" and Sonny's other neat tricks with his sticks. These exact antics started that Neal Peart already used by the mid-70's have rarely been convincingly replicated with the exception of Emory. Sonny was just a kid back then but he did admit to a friend of mine in person (at an autograph signing event)that 40+years ago he did not even want to try and do that himself because "I wasn't an acrobat like he (Peart) was but I can tell you that I still watch every video, online clinic or documentary featuring Peart with or without his bandmates "because that guy is a legend and by far the best (drummer in the world).
Personally when it comes to Rush and Peart in particular I don't have such a clear-cut opinion although it's pretty close: I consider that Neil Peart could "quite possibly" be the best drummer to be considered as such. Rush has a broad fanbase, they can fill stadiums with enthused, nearly out-of-control spectators. Peart was an unusually talented drummer who played with two unusually talented bandmates that had broad exposure to immense numbers on stage, radio, TV, films, album sales etc. It's that sort of exposure that turns a twinkling star into a stellar superstar. That's what happened with the late Canadian drummer whose untimely death exposes how taxing relentless touring interspersed almost exclusively with grueling studio sessions can be. But long after Neal's passing and the end of Rush the legend will still live just like it does with John Bonham and Buddy Rich. I know enough about Sonny Emory to know he wants nothing to do with such a lifestyle. Being rich, famous and idle is perfect to play with your man-toys nut being rich, famous and too busy to realize the exertion is no way to live. Sonny knows but I'm not sure Neil did foresee his near future as best dead drummer in the world. Someone will eventually get a hold of the title left behind but Sonny's much too wise to be interested.
sonny emory used to play for cameo, jonathan took sonny's place after he left!

I don't know if it was the Best drum solo in the world but it was an amazing and spectacular solo. The drumer is an juggler and has an monster technique.
I've gotta say, I'm only watching this because it popped up on the YT menu. It's early morning and I haven't turned the sound on because she's asleep. I've got no pre conceived thoughts about this man's drumming, but as this plays in silence, I can't believe what his hands and body are doing at the same time! This is a superior display of what the brain can process at tremendous speed, accuracy, impact and musically expressive emotion, with the benefit of an exquisitely developed body capable far beyond his peers and predecessors. I'm looking forward to watching this on the big screen with the sound system ON, later today.
DEEP TALENT! THE MAN! Thank You!
This kind of druming makes My life worth living.
That is one really A M A Z I N G D R U M M E R !!! What an eye opener.
Mastermanship expressed to the limit .
when we talk about putting it all together this is what is meant...his control and dynamics are on another level...he goes from madness to musicality effortlessly...from a flurry of notes to subtle grace notes within the same phrasing...he can shout and whisper in the same sentence...very hard to pull off and remain musical...in the end being musical is everything and a lot of drummers lose this discipline when they stretch out...not Sonny!

You have to see him over the years. At Montreux Jazz with EWF. He's definitely one of the greatest of all time
I saw a clip of him playing 'Cyclone' with Hornsby about a year ago. I am old enough to have heard all the EWF stuff as it was hitting the charts but I didn't know or care about who the drummer was back then. I knew I was seeing someone special though when I saw him with Hornsby. The present clip was just more confirmation. The drummer in our Praise Band struggles and so I sent her a clip of 'Cyclone' as a study in poise, timekeeping, and just all around drumming excellence.

That reminds me of Take Five from Dave Brubeck. My youngest son liked it a lot once he heard me played in 2009 and he was eleven years old then. Then I wondered kids can relate to this drum solo which is now over 60 years since recorded.
There is no "best" drum solo. However, there is no denying that this guy is a master of his craft. Talk about being in the pocket, he and the bass player are demonstrating exactly what that means.

I could watch Sonny for days. His nuances, and the moods he creates, his sense of rhythm, timing, showmanship, his ability to move flawlessly to any style of music all done effortlessly, so it would seem. I know better. Its a big deal to be a drummers drummer. Few have that distinction. The band kicks some serious butt and are all the tippy tops at their game. Great stuff.
Great group! Lee strikes again!
No such statement as the "best" drummer in the world, or any other musician for that matter, they are all talented in their own right and this guy is up there at the top with many other superb players.
