- Several mathematicians who did pioneering work on polynomials had, for some reason, pretty colourful and not very happy lives.

Great video. Question why was there such an interest in 3 order polynomial. The second was motivated by knowledge of ballistics for warfare.
Small remark the gl in Italian is silent. So Tartaglia is spoken as Tartaia.
The Italian pasta Tagliatelle is spoken as: Taiatelle. This means literally small cuts, it comes from Latin: taiare, which means to cut)
Duly noted - thank you! I think the interest in higher polynomials - cubic, etc - was purely intellectual. Much of pure maths is. There isn't necessarily a known application for it at the time.
Wrong pronunciation, it hurts your ears!
Great story... would make a great movie! But I’m not sure stove pipe hats were a thing in 16th c Milan? I know it’s a fashion centre but....
Just wanted to note:
Galois wasn't the first to prove that quintics are generally unsolvable with roots and standard arithmetic operations. It was Abel and Ruffini
Instead of rap battles they had math battles? 😮 Amazing.
This is pretty much an abridged version of Veritasium's video
which video

Veritasium tells this story with characteristic excitement and enthusiasm. He also goes deeper into the maths.
@@bini420 The one about the invention of complex numbers.
