    End-of-week H/H match recap:
    ...
    ~~~Today's action:
    Our champion is defeated after winning $600.
    But never fear, there's a new champion to play our Super Match!
    Today's audience match question: "Lover's _________" (My thoughts: Leap, Lane, Quarrel)
    The celebs: Fannie (Lane), Richard (Quarrel), and Charles (Leap)
    The choice: Leap
    The answers: Leap, Quarrel, Lane -- The celebs got them all today, and in the proper order! That doesn't happen a whole lot. It must have been an easy question, because it's also the first time in ages that I thought of all three answers.
    Now I'm wondering who our new champion will pick for the head-to-head? He called on Fannie first, but didn't take her ($500) answer. But the contestant said that Charles' answer was the first thing that came to his mind when he saw the question, so he might try Charles on the principle that their minds think alike. But few contestants seem immune to Richard's gravitational pull, so chances are...
    He picks Richard. (Mentally insert a Willow "Bored Now!" GIF here.) That makes 17 of the 19 most recent head-to-heads played by Richard, nine of which he matched (not counting a possible match today, as I don't know the result yet).
    Gene: "Do you believe in ESP?"
    Contestant: "No."
    Today's H/H question: "__________ Arthur"
    (My first thought is King Arthur. I thinks that's the most generic, timeless response. Another thought was Bea Arthur, who was starring in the CBS Norman Lear sitcom "Maude" when this show was taped. The series ran from 1972 to 1978 and was highly rated.)
    Richard starts immediately and finishes his answer quickly. This time he looks toward seat #4 before filing his card which is unusual because he almost always looks to seat #6 when he's answering a H/H question. Then he pauses, and instead of filing the card, it looks like he draws a straight line and writes something else. Then he does look to seat #6 and files his answer.
    The champion answers "Beatrice." Hmm. Would they match that with "Bea" if that's what Richard wrote? Gene always say it has to be "an exact match," but they've made at least three exceptions to that "rule" that I've so far observed. Well, I guess we'll cross that bridge when (and if) we come to it. I still have a feeling Richard will say King...
    No chit-chat or fooling around or apologies today. Richard whips out "King" and tosses the card without another word.
    As Gene subsequently reveals, it turns out Richard initially wrote "Bea" (he holds up the discarded card) and then changed his mind...
    No match today.
    ~~~End-of-week H/H match recap:
    Time ran out on Monday just before the H/H match, but they squeezed two in on Wednesday, so we got a total of 5 H/H questions this week, but with only two matches: Richard 2/5
    So another all-Richard week. In fact, for the past four weeks, Richard has played every single H/H but two. (Fannie and Betty each got to play once.) Looking back at the past 27 weeks (to the week of 606-610), I counted 12 all-Richard weeks, so it's a little less than half the time that he's the only celebrity playing for an entire week.
    Looking at the remainder of the panel, Brett retains her (slight) edge in accuracy over Richard for yet another week and Charles maintains his (roughly) 10-percentage-point lead over his two co-regulars.
    Dick Martin completed his second week (he still has 20 go) without a shot at the H/H, although his game has definitely improved and he's matching a good deal in the regular rounds. Which is a good thing, because down the road, he'll sit in Richard's vacated seat five times late in the show's run, and his final appearance will be in CNR's seat the next-to-last week of the show.
    Juliet Prowse likewise wasn't chosen for the H/H. She, however, is already half done with her Match Game "career" - she'll return for episodes 1111-1115.
    ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our three regulars will be joined by:
    -----Semi-regular Patti Deutsch, whose last appearance was six weeks ago. This will be her 23rd week (of 42). She stands at 1 for 2 in the head-to-head match department.
    -----George Kennedy, returning for his second week (of 5). George made his debut in episodes 666-670 and scored two H/H matches that week!
    -----Donna Mills, another celebrity who will join the panel for just one single week and then never ______ again.
    ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts).
    Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts).
    Richard - 40.9% (177 wins in 433 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 740, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

    TV trivia: Fannie is wearing a "New Zoo Revue" t-shirt today. I used to watch that syndicated kids' TV show back in the day! I can't find any connection between Fannie and the show, but several Match Game alumni made guest appearances, including Richard Dawson, Jo Anne Worley, Jim Backus (MG episodes 81-85), and June Lockhart (MG episodes 111-115).

    Poor Juanita looked so confused. She obviously thought "home" was a great response. but she never thought about specific places. And as if to prove how bad it was, she matched Dick Martin! And anyway, most people love their homes, don't they? I was surprised that "Burbank" or "Detroit" never came up, their usual whipping boys.
