Hi everyone! Two words to decribe Andrey`s course: game changer. I am actually attending the course now, got 3 months left (started September 21, ending in June 22). I`ve been on a couple other courses and none of them is even close to what Andrey is doing. I usually don’t do reviews, being positive or negative, but I had to do an exception here: Last year I had an option to enroll in an audio engineering course in a university, or, after finding Andrew’s channel, to his course. After assisting to one of his trial classes I have left with my jaw dropped. In just one class, which coincidentally was about EQ, I learned much more than any other online tutorial/course, mix master video, book, etc. that I have taken/watched/read before. I’ve enrolled immediately. Each class of his course is a goldmine of information, like the present video. You will learn not just about the what, but the why and the how with microscopic details. I really like this. 👍 This is all about KNOWING what your EQ is ACTUALLY DOING. We should test our main EQ that we use the most. Test it just like this, so that from the beginning we know what the tool is actually doing. This is an EXCELLENT practice.
Very well explained as always. Every wide filter boost should be followed by a cut with a nice slope to avoid boosting neighbouring harmonics anyway. This also shows how the sound gets much worse if the boost is too much. The problem with presets is that they are designed for a specific piano sound but never matches your own piano sound. Kind of useless to use them really but it could be a starting point.
I love the way he laughed at the potential Q on the SSL4000G Eq over the API - he laughs in the face of people who think the name is the most important thing. for good reason

So true. All examples are very clear. The problem with RUclips is that 95% of the audio mixing "tutorials" are total bullshit and it's hard to differentiate bullshit and pro content when you are a beginner :(

Thank you, Andrew, for the enlightening video. I have listened to a wide variety of free & paid tutorials and have spent time on ear training. For the most part, they have all contributed to a bettering understanding of sound, but not necessarily to a better understanding of mixing. Ultimately, improving one's mixing skills comes down to extensive practice and comparisons to reference tracks. Much of what I have viewed to date either has been too pedantic (e.g., knowing the frequency range of a clarinet's Chalumeau register) or too generalized (e.g., start with these presets and refine them accordingly). While this has been helpful to a degree, such presentations often are wearisome and result in fatigue, which is an audio mixer's worst enemy. It drains the soul out of you and severely impedes your workflow. Granted, I have come across a few presentations that address more meaning mixing topics like frequency & temporal masking, but your video here is the first one I have encountered that cleanly & clearly pulls together the three facets of your critical thinking approach for EQ, which I have heard elsewhere separately and in a more disjointed fashion: (1) Understand an instrument's functional nuances; (2) recognize the benefits of your instrument; and (3) understand the characteristics of your equalizers. I found the third facet, in particular, to be the biggest eye-opener and what is often overlooked. Embarrassingly, I have overlooked this, and I should know better, because I tend to think very analytically. This is not always a good thing; it sometimes gets in the way of creatively. Still, something as fundamental has REALLY getting to know the strengths & weaknesses of your gear and plugins goes a very long way toward mastering the practical skill of quickly selecting the right tool for the right job, significantly saving time during mixing and improving workflow. Don't get me wrong. I typically read user manuals cover to cover, but I feel the tips you have provided in this video will improve my decision-making and workflow. Bravo & much appreciated.
I totally agree. These types of problems always occur in people who have not trained their ears, do not have sufficient technical preparation and who only know how to repeat what they see others do in RUclips videos like a parrot. I never get tired of repeating it: learn, train and practice, things that nobody wants to do today. All this and many more things that you have explained in other videos, have made the vast majority of current productions sound like farts. Greetings from Spain.

To answer this question imagine on my course we have the main topics which are mixing and mastering. And ion the end of each class we have extra topics. In the very beginning of the course we have the Studio Setup topic as one of those extra topics. This topic take 2 months. It's one of the most myth busting and full of many unknown things. This topic affects mixing and mastering as much as mixing and mastering by themselves. This topic includes the monitor question you ask. The answer is not that simple as saying "just get these ones". There are so many things that should be taken into consideration that I'd be a criminal if I'd just say "take these ones". So unfortunately I can't answer your question. Not because of I don't want but because of it takes the ocean of nuances to explain to give this answer.

Great training. Thank you! The SSL Native Strip 2 from what I see in plugin doctor, is a much broader curve than the PA SSL 4000, coming in around 0.35q. All of the Native SSL Strip is super broad like that even at their tightest q in E mode. At the broadest q it's like 0.18q. I wish we could make it tighter than that. Without E mode, it's even wider. Cheers.
Those things are Constant EQ VS Vitnage EQ curve. It's supposed to be like that. It has nothing to do with this video subject. We have the wrong markings around the knob. People still believe in its precise marking. So they set up their filter wrong other than they are able to say the difference by ears. But one you saw my video you will not have this problem anymore. @@AndrewZeleno1 I hear you and agree. However in plugin doctor, and my ear, it confirms PA’s SSL 4000 E is 1.4q like you said. You also said the SSL channelstrip is a more narrow q compared at 2.4q even though it’s supposed to be the same. I’m letting you know it’s not narrow, it’s quite a lot wider even if you dial the gain all the way. I wish it was able to be tighter/narrow. I understand the vintage curve. :) Love your content!

if there are phase issues, i don't think linear eq will solve much... and it will tax the CPU considerably more. maybe a limiter would be a better substitute for parallel compression?
Phase shift is not always a bad thing. Maybe the phase shift you get with the NY compression gives you a partial phase cancellation which improves the sound.

The only way that works consistently is to close your eyes and eq with your ears in context to the whole track. Don’t look at the individual track you are eq‘ing, listen to the whole song. And make the changes. I eq a whole vocal within 20 seconds max. If it takes longer then it’s the wrong approach. You are taken out of your creativity after 20 seconds and start to make rational decisions not emotional. Very important.

I've mostly worked as a mixing/mastering hobbyist for about twenty years, personally, and this is without a doubt, the most in-depth analysis and breakdown of the audio science I have witnessed. After assisting to one of his trial classes I have left with my jaw dropped. In just one class, which coincidentally was about EQ, I learned much more than any other online tutorial/course, mix master video, book, etc. that I have taken/watched/read before. I’ve enrolled immediately. Each class of his course is a goldmine of information, like the present video. You will learn not just about the what, but the why and the how with microscopic details. This is all about KNOWING what your EQ is ACTUALLY DOING.
We should test our main EQ that we use the most. Test it just like this, so that from the beginning we know what the tool is actually doing.
This is an EXCELLENT practice.
Very well explained as always. Every wide filter boost should be followed by a cut with a nice slope to avoid boosting neighbouring harmonics anyway. This also shows how the sound gets much worse if the boost is too much. The problem with presets is that they are designed for a specific piano sound but never matches your own piano sound. Kind of useless to use them really but it could be a starting point.

Thank you, Andrew, for the enlightening video. I have listened to a wide variety of free & paid tutorials and have spent time on ear training. For the most part, they have all contributed to a bettering understanding of sound, but not necessarily to a better understanding of mixing. Ultimately, improving one's mixing skills comes down to extensive practice and comparisons to reference tracks. Much of what I have viewed to date either has been too pedantic (e.g., knowing the frequency range of a clarinet's Chalumeau register) or too generalized (e.g., start with these presets and refine them accordingly). While this has been helpful to a degree, such presentations often are wearisome and result in fatigue, which is an audio mixer's worst enemy. It drains the soul out of you and severely impedes your workflow. Granted, I have come across a few presentations that address more meaning mixing topics like frequency & temporal masking, but your video here is the first one I have encountered that cleanly & clearly pulls together the three facets of your critical thinking approach for EQ, which I have heard elsewhere separately and in a more disjointed fashion: (1) Understand an instrument's functional nuances; (2) recognize the benefits of your instrument; and (3) understand the characteristics of your equalizers. I found the third facet, in particular, to be the biggest eye-opener and what is often overlooked. Embarrassingly, I have overlooked this, and I should know better, because I tend to think very analytically. This is not always a good thing; it sometimes gets in the way of creatively. Still, something as fundamental has REALLY getting to know the strengths & weaknesses of your gear and plugins goes a very long way toward mastering the practical skill of quickly selecting the right tool for the right job, significantly saving time during mixing and improving workflow. Don't get me wrong. I typically read user manuals cover to cover, but I feel the tips you have provided in this video will improve my decision-making and workflow. Bravo & much appreciated.

I never get tired of repeating it: learn, train and practice, things that nobody wants to do today.

To answer this question imagine on my course we have the main topics which are mixing and mastering. And ion the end of each class we have extra topics. In the very beginning of the course we have the Studio Setup topic as one of those extra topics. This topic take 2 months. It's one of the most myth busting and full of many unknown things. This topic affects mixing and mastering as much as mixing and mastering by themselves. This topic includes the monitor question you ask. The answer is not that simple as saying "just get these ones". There are so many things that should be taken into consideration that I'd be a criminal if I'd just say "take these ones". So unfortunately I can't answer your question. Not because of I don't want but because of it takes the ocean of nuances to explain to give this answer.

The SSL Native Strip 2 from what I see in plugin doctor, is a much broader curve than the PA SSL 4000, coming in around 0.35q. All of the Native SSL Strip is super broad like that even at their tightest q in E mode. At the broadest q it's like 0.18q. I wish we could make it tighter than that. Without E mode, it's even wider. Cheers.
Those things are Constant EQ VS Vitnage EQ curve. It's supposed to be like that. It has nothing to do with this video subject. We have the wrong markings around the knob. People still believe in its precise marking. So they set up their filter wrong other than they are able to say the difference by ears. But one you saw my video you will not have this problem anymore. You also said the SSL channelstrip is a more narrow q compared at 2.4q even though it’s supposed to be the same. I’m letting you know it’s not narrow, it’s quite a lot wider even if you dial the gain all the way. I wish it was able to be tighter/narrow. I understand the vintage curve. :) Love your content!

how do you feel about TMT in brainworx plugins and how they effect the phase differently for each channel?
TMT is not what they say actually. It's much more simplistic than real channel differences in real analog equipment. And of course it affects the phase. Anyway it's a long story to put in a comment.

Hi Andrew! Should I use linear phase eq on the parallel bus to avoid phase issues when I do NY compression for example?
if there are phase issues, i don't think linear eq will solve much... and it will tax the CPU considerably more. maybe a limiter would be a better substitute for parallel compression?
Phase shift is not always a bad thing. Maybe the phase shift you get with the NY compression gives you a partial phase cancellation which improves the sound.

The only way that works consistently is to close your eyes and eq with your ears in context to the whole track. Don’t look at the individual track you are eq‘ing, listen to the whole song. And make the changes. I eq a whole vocal within 20 seconds max. If it takes longer then it’s the wrong approach. You are taken out of your creativity after 20 seconds and start to make rational decisions not emotional. Very important.

I don't wear shirts. I have 7-8 shirts which I used to record 50 videos over the last yeas. I'm not interested in buying one for a video and getting rid of it. I invested 150 thousands USD in my studio. This is where I spend my money. For daily basis life I don't wear shirts. But thanks for asking.
