Gertie doesn't go what she's told until she gets food, will not hesitate to kill anyone who messes with her, and just dances on the spot or has a little nap when she's bored. Big respect for this dinosaur, powerful energy
When that animation came out, my great-grandma who passed away at 96 years old was 4, and Mickey Mouse wouldn't appear on screen for another solid decade. Man, it puts thing into perspective...
It's so odd to think that all the essentials of animation were right there on the screen in 1914. Sure, we've built upon it a lot, but Gertie is timeless in her demonstration of the basic art form.
Not exactly: J.S. Blackton's *Humorous Phases of Funny Faces* (1906) is considered to be the earliest cartoon animation; and films like Emil;e Cohl's *Fantasmagorie* also preceded this. It's not the first cartoon but it was the first one that many people saw. There were no word cards originally. This was shown in theatres and McCay would himself yell out the words to Gertie who seemed to hear and obey. When she catches the pumpkin, McCay tossed a real pumpkin which went behind the screen but looked as though it went into Gertie's mouth.
