Linked Genes

  • Paul Andersen explains how linked genes behave and how linked genes were discovered. He shows how linked genes would be reflected in a dihybrid cross using a fruit fly simulator. He uses chromosome-based punnett squares to explain why the frequency of recombination is less that 50%. The actual crosses discovered by Thomas Morgan and Alfred Sturtevant are included.

I would sleep/not pay attention in class at all and the night before i took a bio test I looked at a few of your videos about 3 times each to fully capture everything you say and retain it and end up receiving an A on my test. Because of your help, I am able to bs my way out of biology :D

      Was confused by this too. Had to watch it a couple times. He noticed that both male and female were wild type in wings and color from the first cross. He then said that the mutations are recessive and by mutations he was referring to black color and vestigial wings. So the wild type is the dominant.

    Why less than 50% means genes are linked? is this theory suitable for all gene recombination?

    • @ohmylanta4558
      @ohmylanta4558 10 лет назад

      Because if they were not linked, they would end up together 50% of the time anyway, through independent assortment of alleles to gametes. AND for genes greater than 50 centimorgans apart, it isnt possible to tell if they reside on the same chromosome.
