  • In this video I talk about my thoughts on the JoyeAuto Apple CarPlay ‘Hack’ for the Porsche 911 (991.1 with PCM 3.1). After 6 months of using it I’ve come to learn about its strengths and a few weaknesses. I also talk about the 2 things that bite you during the installation that you should be aware of that are easy to avoid. #AppleCarPlay

      I’m looking at the AvinUSA system for my E46. It’s interesting because it’s clearly a complete swap and it works with the IBUS on the BMW and integrates car’s sensors completely. On your 996, I’d love to see the new Porsche classic system with CarPlay. It looks very nice. I’m thinking about getting a 997.2 C4. It’s my brother’s and he never drives it. In that case I’d look,at Dynavin I think. Good videos. I sort of agree with Nick on the carbon fiber, though you did a great job installing it.

    I just installed this, and one thing to get rid of the phone issue is unpair the phone from PCM - on the phone forget the porsche PCM and in the PCM delete the phone. Now it has to come through the apple car play. I made the Bose mistake, with the fiberoptic audio lines. I put the JoyeAuto unit in the passenger footwell and plugged the fuse in the passenger side of the fuse box.
    Your initial video was VERY VERY helpful! still a 2 to 3 hour job. As for Aux vs Bluetooth Aux, you should be going to Aux. Bluetooth Aux is for playing music from your phone to the PCM (without using the JoyeAuto unit).

    The Aux BT audio works fine it is taking audio directly from your phone and the screen from the carplay device. If you do this you won't get the turn by turn audio or siri over the speakers unfortunately, only music/phonecall audio. It uses the factory car microphone which is much better than the mic that comes with the device.
    Using normal Aux you get everything through the carplay device instead of directly from your phone so it all works correctly but the microphone doesn't sound as good and you cant use the diamond button on the steering wheel to skip track.

    I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I received and installed mine today and this vid made it sooo easy. Just a few comments for others that have either the BOSE or Burmester systems. There are two orange fiber optic wires that need to be transferred from the original wiring harness to the new harness in order to get any sound. This does not need to be done for the base stereo system apparently. Thanks again!

    Ive had this mod in my 2015 Macan Turbo about a month now, thanks to James fantastic installation video. (Its really not that hard if you are organised and give yourself the time to follow each step and I’m certainly no electrician or mechanic so you CAN do it) Also Joyeauto are very quick to reply on any enquiry or question and while their English isn’t great you will get there! TIPS: James, its the AUX not the BT AUX you need to select. Joyeauto suggested that in Bluetooth on your iPhone you need to “forget” the native PCM connection and this also seemed to fix the issue with video working and no audio and the iPhone defaulting to PCM output rather than CarPlay. With that done now when you start the car it goes straight to CarPlay. The only thing is it can be a bit slow by the time the whole thing connects but I think this is more to do with the fact that we are asking a lot of a PCM that to me was designed in the 1970s!! Only issue I have now is the controls (for phone) on the steering wheel done seem to work every time so I’m working on that and suspect it has something to do with giving the system time to connect properly before use. Anyway thats my 20 cents worth. Love your work James!! David, Syd Australia

    A glass screen protector makes the swiping much easier- the touchscreen tech is different, capacitive vs resistive. Resistive screens like on the 3.1 are pressure sensitive, not touch sensitive. Rugged laptop touch screens use resistive as they work with all gloves and water on the screen will not befuddle the input. Downsides are less responsiveness and the display is covered in a thin layer of plastic, which is all the more reason to use a protector.

    Awesome and very complete review, thanks !! My question has to do with the problem with incoming calls. Rather than use your phone's bluetooth menu, can you not just switch between carplay mode and PCM mode on your head unit using The NAV button? Seems like it might be easier?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  3 года назад

      Yes, you can do that purely using the head unit but if the PCM unit captures the incoming call but your iPhone thinks your audio is going through CarPlay, you have issues. Just turning off the PCM's Aux Bluetooth menu is enough to fix the problem.

    Hi James, I had this installed on my 2017 Cayenne (PCM4.0). I had the same
    Issue as you with the incoming calls but my installer and JoyeAuto support person told me that I need to answer calls using the steering wheel control buttons. This automatically uses the PCM Bluetooth for the call which is actually better quality sound than the CarPlay system. One other issue I still have and can’t figure out is that my front view and 360 parking cameras don’t automatically come on when the car is in drive. I can hear the audible parking sensors but the CarPlay screen does not automatically switch to the parking cameras. Reverse camera works fine with no issues though. Just wondering if you know if this is normal or is there a way to get the front parking cameras to automatically pick up when parking?
    Thanks

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  2 года назад

      Thanks Richard. Glad it helped. Yes, it's a tight squeeze back there but with the right 'finagling' it will fit. I believe there are some open spaces below the PCM which can take some of the wiring and try to make sure the black wiring harness (cube like connection) is over to the right hand side of the space.

      If you have PDK, then the camera can get its power from the red 12v wire on the JoyeAuto wiring harness inside the cabin. If you have a manual, you need to tap the brake light wire within one of the rear tail lights.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  2 года назад +1

      Hey Jonathan! For the first issue, it's probably the bluetooth set-up within the JoyeAuto settings. When on the CarPlay screen, press the "Porsche" app and it will take you to the JoyeAuto settings menu. From there, go through and make sure that bluetooth is on, the network is visible, and that your phone is paired. If that's all fine, you may need to delete your phone from the JA and reconnect it again. As you pair the phone... select YES for pairing, select YES for auto-syncing your favorite contacts then WAIT until the third and final window pops up on your iPhone's screen which says something like "Use JoyeAuto for Wireless CarPlay?" and of course, press YES. This last option sometimes takes 5 seconds or so to appear, which is why many people click off the menu and think they're done. For the second issue, make sure the little white dip switch in position #1 on the back of the JA box is OFF. This is the touch-screen calibration menu you're seeing with the "+" signs that you need to touch. You only need to go through that once, then flip the dip switch off so it never comes up again. Hope this helps!

    AutoAmateur, I'm sure your intermittent connection issues are due to having your AUX BT active in the PCM. I see you still have AUX BT active in this video at 9:03, and the reality is that you don't need AUX BT active when you install a system like this, as it is fighting with AUX for the connectivity. I commented on this in your original installation video as one of the issues I had with intermittent connectivity issues. Once I deactivated the AUX BT in my PCM, I never had any connection issues in more than 6 months.
    My comment in your original video on AUX BT:
    4. If you are using Wireless Carplay, deactivate the PCM AUX BT. This one took me weeks to figure out. Every time I would turn my car on, I intermittently had connections issues that would prevent Apple Carplay to activate or play any sound, and it would require me 4 to 5 minutes (sometimes unpairing and pairing the whole thing again) for it to work. I came to the realization that AUX BT and the Carplay module bluetooth were fighting for which could connect first. If the Carplay module connected first, no issues. If the PCM AUX BT connected first, it created a significant connection issue. Apparently the AUX BT and the AUX share the same channel, and you can use one or the other. To deactivate AUX BT in PCM 3.1 see, ruclips.net/video/TG6tIFoxRzw/видео.html. This video shows how to activate AUX BT, but you can follow steps to deactivate.
    I have not experienced issues with incoming/outgoing calls. This PCM function, which is different from AUX BT, needs to be paired through bluetooth. I consulted this specific issue with manufacturer of the device and they provided these setting instructions.
    My comment in your original video on PCM bluetooth:
    3. I couldn't control the Apple CarPlay module with steering wheel controls, only volume would work, but the phone control buttons were useless. This happened because I unpaired the PCM bluetooth while trying to connect everything, thinking that I didn't need the PCM bluetooth connection, since I was connecting via Apple Carplay module. Leave the PCM bluetooth paired and you will have phone control from your steering wheel. The only control you will lose is with the special configurable button, if you have the button configured to advance or replay a song, which you will not be able to do from steering wheel while using Carplay.
    In summary, after I made these adjustments, I had absolutely NO connection issues. The system had worked flawlessly and seamlessly integrated. Hope this helps.

      I followed this advice and haven't had any bluetooth issues either. I tend to connect via cable though. I have a Boxster 981S and My only gripes are:
      1. I haven't been able to find a fuse which turns off after 15 minutes, so I either let it drain the battery or It cuts out immediately after the ignition is switched off.
      2. I wonder if my video cable is not precisely connected enough, because the video on mine looks more grainy and less "crisp" than yours. Might just be that my PCM 3.1 is a bit older?

      After a while with this solution for CarPlay, I started to do a speaker upgrade on my Bose system. Because I had the crappy Bose speakers in my Macan, I really didn’t notice any significant difference in sound when I connected my phone through this CarPlay module initially as compared to the PCM native connection. Audio was still crappy after I installed the system.
      As I started upgrading the speakers (have done all tweeters with the Burmester tweeters, the sub with an an 8” Rockford Fosgate retrofit to the Bose box, the center with the Burmester full range speaker and door midranges with a pair of Audison AP4), I noticed a nice improvement in audio quality, but still there was something missing. That fullness of sound was still not there.
      My USB cable was connected through the CarPlay module. Apparently there is either no full passthru of sound or the AUX input, which this thing use as the input, does not render the same quality as the PCM direct USB (iPod) connection.
      I changed my USB cable to the iPod input and there it was, the fullness I was missing. Apparently the DAC in this system converts to analog signal and there is a significant audio quality degradation. I also think that this module does not fully take advantage of all speakers (as I move the module fader/balance around, sounds disappears as I fade to the back, and gets a lot lower when I balance right it left). I only noticed this when I upgraded the speakers I have replaced so far.
      So, there is a compromised way to continue to use the CarPlay module, but there is a drawback as some functionality is lost. I’m connecting the iPhone through native USB PCM iPod USB port. Then I connect the phone also to CarPlay via wireless Carplay. With this, I’m able to retain audio sound quality (which I’m not willing to compromise) and retain the video side of CarPlay. Unfortunately, some of the sounds from some apps are directed through Carplay, hence although Siri can hear me, I can’t hear her back.... for example. Some map apps also direct turn by turn direction through CarPlay rather than the connected audio. I figured that the only map app that I can select audio output is Google Maps, so this one works well because I set the sound to not go through wireless audio, then it goes through the wired USB connection. But you will not hear turn by turn direction from Waze and Apple Maps as there is no way to do the same.
      Since I prefer the increased quality in audio sound, I can accept the limited CarPlay functionality I’m losing...

    Just echoing what @Fastpitch has said in another comment -- The DAC in this Joyeaudio unit really lets the experience down. I only have "Sound Package Plus" in my 981 Boxster S and even with that fairly poor speaker system I can hear that the audio quality difference. When I route audio through the Joueauto + Carplay, the music loses much of the mid level power and some of the bass response. For a short journey it's tolerable, but on a long drive it's unacceptable. Factory USB audio (and even Factory Bluetooth streaming!) sounds heaps better than when wired through the Joyeauto Carplay. The EQ and "loudness" settings on the Joyeauto are also terrible - just pure distortion.
    I had some limited success playing with the "fader" settings - I get much "fuller" sound if I push the fader settings on the Joyeauto box right to the front, which I suspect is because there are no rear speakers in my Boxster 981S.
    This is a shame because it's a lot of money to spend on something that's compromised. Had I known this before, I probably would have just stuck with the PCM, so commenting here in the hope that I can save others from making my mistake. Or better yet, maybe somebody else has found a solution?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Stuart! I haven’t really noticed any reduction in sound quality. Of course, it doesn’t sound as loud (primarily) or full as the PCM sound output, but the quality difference doesn’t bother me at all. I listen to my music on 4 to 5 hour long road trips and it never even registers to me that the sound isn’t as good as maybe it could be through a native OEM device. I used to be in a band and record music in recording studios, so I totally get what you’re saying and I agree that there is a difference. But it’s not a big deal at all to me for an in-car music solution. Put it this way, the wireless Siri, waze and maps functionality alone is worth the $350+ price tag to me. Music is a distant 4th priority for me at least. Thanks for the comment though and would love to hear if anyone has come up with a solution to this!! Cheers!

      @@AutoAmateur Thanks! On reflection, I maybe I was a little harsh :) --I don't regret the install, and I really enjoyed the process! I am coming from an excellent Dynaudio system in my last car to only the Sound Package Plus in the Boxster S, which may be why I'm more sensitive than most. (Really wanted the Bose but this model had every other option, and Porsches are famously loud for road noise etc.). I've asked Joyeauto if they have any suggestions and what setup should provide the optimum setup and I will feed back - they're quite responsive.
      I'd be super grateful for your thoughts on two small questions too: (1) how did you choose the right fuse? On my car I have some which appear to stay on constantly (obviously can't use these = battery drain) and others which only activate on ignition. Is there one which cuts power after 15 or 30 minutes? The way the screen cuts out when I turn the car off looks like it's not good for the unit! (2) Is the image quality when using CarPlay as crisp as the usual PCM? I've read reviews stating that Carplay quality is crisp, but mine has a bit of a grainy/ washed out quality to it. I don't know whether this is just a limitation of the PCM or whether perhaps one of the wires isn't seated correctly inside the HU or got damaged in the process. Things *look* better in your videos, but these subtle differences are difficult to fully gauge on video.
      Thanks again so much for the awesome, content and for taking the time to comment back!

      Sounds like it’s an issue with the little white pins on the rear corner of the Joyeauto unit. Check your wiring diagram and it will show you. I think for the OEM rear camera to work you need pin 10 in the OFF (down) position. For aftermarket you need it in the ON (up) position. Or one or the other. The front camera is for pin 9 think. Same thing, OEM the switch is one way, aftermarket cam the switch / pin is the other way up or down. Also make sure you’re plugging the cameras into the correct video in ports. I think they’re called RRear and FRear on the little white labels around the wires. RRear being for the rear cam. FRear being the front.

      So I had to unpair my phone from the pcm and let the CarPlay handle all the phone and messages. Dip switch 7 and 8 has to be on. 8 for factory backup camera, 7 for the front camera. Had to turn off all video and rear camera in CarPlay settings and turn on front camera there. The joyeauto front camera handling looks like in stage one. No way to trigger it with any button. It comes on after you take the car out of reverse either to P or D. It stays on for 10 seconds. It would be nice when you parking you can just hit a button to turn it on. Hopefully a future update will address these issues.

    It's been 6 months? no kidding. If I am not mistaken, this doesn't work with Bose audio and android devices must be wired to work, right? No bluetooth support yet?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  3 года назад

      Hello! It does work with Bose (I have the Bose audio system) and it does work with Android but only through the wired USB connection.

    Can you still use PCM navigation post installation if you want to? Or does CarPlay remove native navigation?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  3 года назад +2

      PMC is still 100% functional, just as standard, after you install the JoyeAuto CarPlay unit. You still get all the same PCM screens and capabilities, the PCM map still gets displayed in the instrument cluster etc. The PCM just treats CarPlay like any Aux input, like an iPod or whatever. It just also projects video as well as audio like other Aux inputs.

    You need to turn off PCM bluetooth, then it should always connect, and always get your phone calls. This is why its so erratic for you!

    I just have one question: Why didn't you just install the PCM4? Better touchscreen, apple carplay already integrated etc.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Год назад +1

      Good question! Because the PCM 4.0 unit is thousands not hundreds of dollars and it won’t fit.

      @@AutoAmateur the money is certainly a good point but are you sure it wouldn't fit?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Год назад +1

      I was sure it would fit too but the sources I spoke with were adamant it wouldn’t and none of the Porsche dealers could verify it either way. From what I understand the 4.0 unit has slightly different mounting mounts.

      Could one of a few things... 1) did you plug in the little black aux Jack into the aux Jack port in either your glove box or your center console? 2) Did you transfer the two orange wires for your Bose (if you have Bose) from the OEM black wiring harness and relocate them to the back of the new Joyeauto wiring harness? 3) Make sure the black audio cable from the back of the PCM to the Joyeauto box is plugged in properly.

    Installed in 981 Boxster S , did not work after going over with tech support many times with the same results, even draining my battery! Fed up and returned the item. Worse yet, no credit or partial credit. Highway robbery!!! I would be Leary of doing business with this company!!

      You should have contacted me! The battery drain issue was most likely you using the wrong type of fuse slot. The other issues were most likely cable connection issues I could have talked you through.
