Love the vids ,I'm a carpenter/ joiner from Scotland I've never got why people put mdf skirting, facing in wet areas, when it gets wet it's like a sponge, pvc people is the way to go
I stopped paying my water bill 2 years ago, not had a problem since, I'd tell my friends & family to do the same but nobody visits me anymore!

@@TheFunnyCarpenter I've had the gas cut off and don't smoke so the only way I can start a fire is by sawing some hardwood with my blunt saws & flatbits.

In the kid's bathroom I pulled off the mdf and glued tile to the wall.
Luckily the builder had left some matching tiles behind, the only thing they did correctly.
I sliced 4" sections and lined up the grout lines and glued them to the drywall.
I finished with a colouredcaulk that matched the grout.
Holmes lives about ten km away and repaired many new houses around here.
Thanks for your baseboard videos. I am still learning the fine line between good enough and "there is something else you could do to perfect" baseboard and trim repair/painting prep. I know I have spent waaay too much time on it tho. Thanks for helping me feel I am not the only one 👍.
Great tip. I am fortunate enough to have a lumber yard / millwork shop near me. It's cheaper for me to buy pre-primed (3 sides) poplar trim than it is to buy MDF trim from the local Lowes. I'm waiting for the lumber yard to double their prices in an effort to re-establish balance in the universe.

PVC for the bathroom is great.
hard to work with and hard to nail without good tools, but indestructible. I did it with a hand-mitre and a hammer, and it was like cutting steak with a disposable knife and hammering marbles into a trampoline. Got through it by driving nails half way through on my bench before putting the board on the wall and lots of caulk. (It was for a damp basement, so not as embarrassing as it sounds)

I am about to replace water damaged wood baseboard with PVC. Replacing to a wall intersection. I plan to predrill and use trim screws slightly recessed and covered with caulk. I have an outside miter corner that will get a little bead of caulk before it is screwed to the wall.
Why is mdf used in wet areas, guessing that builders will do whatever to cut cost?
Foamcore or pvc trim works well also

In my humble opinion, the cure for this particular issue is to make MDF illegal. It’s glorified (barely) cardboard and 90% of the kitchens I’ve installed in the last 10 years look like garbage within a year.

@@TheFunnyCarpenter lol. I just spent the day doing service work on a 50k cabinet package I installed 3 years ago. All particle board Melamine boxes and painted MDF panels, and imo it’s practically expired. Even on panels siliconed to the floor, mdf just dents so easy by brooms and things, that the paint will crack or chip and lets moisture through then swells. The whole place just looked like trash.
3/4 baltic birch should be the only thing cabinets are made of, and anything other then solid maple shaker doors should be veneer core ply of some kind. Maybe some of that new 3/4 textured Mel for doors and panels.
The 40 year old Oak ply face frame cabinets in my kitchen will outlast anything I will install in my career lol. Pretty sad, even modern Blum etc hardware is sub par imo. Grass should be the bare minimum quality for hardware I think.
Yep, 100% agree! I live on the coast and they used MDF on all baseboards and trim...complete and total junk! It swells at the slightest hint of moisture and then is forever a lumpy mess.
Yup, i made the mistake of sanding everything down and then using a water based primer....now I'm right back where I started 😅
Hey love the videos! We are about to close on our first home and I have tons of future trim and baseboard work to do, so these have been very helpful. I noticed the handrail, ballusters and overall stair design in the background. I think it would really nice with our colonial style. Would you mind sharing where you purchased it?

I have mdf and water damage. The baseboard is swollen about 1 inch from the bottom up. About like yours. I took 1 small section of baseboard off in the closet and drywall looks OK. I have the same issue in most my bedroom from water damage. About 1 inch up also. If I neglect to remove all the baseboards will mold grow in the drywall? Going out of town and I'm in a bind. Was told to keep A/C on about 62
It's been 3 months...mold grew in my bathroom. It is now a major repair of not only baseboard but sheetrock and metal round trim.
I had a flood last year from a burst pipe, and the house has smelled moldy ever since. The water wasn’t very high, so I’m thinking it went into the wood baseboards and mildewed. Or maybe it got into the drywall behind the baseboards. Not sure what to do, other than tear out and replace the baseboards, and possibly cut off the lower few inches of drywall.
Great video! Was your section of baseboard nailed down? It came off so easily without getting destroyed? How does one pull off baseboard in one piece if it was nailed down?

Doesn't the primer and paint help avoid water soaking up? Still interested in trying for my small bathroom fix but seems extra to do the caulk on the bottom.
I tested the board in the water with two coats of primer, and it didn’t do anything to stop the water soaking up. Perhaps the trim paint would offer more resistance but I’m not sure.
So he called the bottom edge only right?

Simply white from Benjamin Moore is nice. It’s a little warmer than plain white.

Yes, I know you are a carpenter..but come on, but wood baseboard in the bathroom? Just use ceramic tiles and that will last almost forever
