Regarding Amanos being aggressive, I had a few in my planted Betta tank a few years ago. They would steal food right out of the Betta's mouth. It was amazing to watch. That's what I call daring - fearless (maybe crazy?) creatures really.
I have a 40 litre betta aquarium which has a flourishing community of cherry shrimp. In fact the only reason I have shrimp in there was cull shrimp from my main tank, but the shrimp have bred and the betta leaves them well alone. I think it comes down to the personality of the betta at the end of the day.

I have 5 hatchet fish 5 otocinclus and 7 glass catfish that never touch my shrimp not even the babies. I was certain about the hatchet's and the oto's but the catfish it's kinda amazing seeing a carnivorous fish that big swimming up to a baby shrimp checking it out and just leave.
I enjoy that you have tanks you LIVE with and not just in a room somewhere on racks. My tanks are in my living area and are a part of our family and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I was watching closely to see if you mentioned my favorite (at the moment) nano fish...the clown killi as a “safe” shrimp fish. Considering they only prefer (mine do anyway) live brine shrimp babies, I worry very little about my baby shrimp.
Yes i have a video on 20 nano fish that get along with baby shrimp breeding :) and yes, i have to live with and play around with my tanks...especially co2 and hilights with fertz...it's almost mandatory to trim weekly.

Another great video, as usual. I have red cherries in all my tanks and I absolutely confirm that sparkling gouramis go after and kill pregnant shrimps. I believe they are attracted by the movement of the aeration once the eggs reach a certain size. I've seen it happen more than once. Not a pleasant site, but in my case they are just doing what I was expecting, controlling the shrimp population growth, something that was getting quite out of hand. I also believe that the sparklings get much more aggressive when they are in their spawning periods and it shows in their behavior with shrimp. Pretty soon I'll have to think about how I'm gonna control the sparklings population, though... On the other hand, I have never seen the ember tetras following or attacking baby shrimp and my betta has just brought down a shrimp that melted in the middle of the tank, completely defenseless.
Yes badis, gouramis and medium danios or tetras are rutheless...embers are laid back, but any baby swimming by...will get their attention in my tanks, when i observed closely. So i moved the embers and swapped reeds and Phoenix or Merah rasboras instead and now the shrimp have doubled quickly! Thanks for watching!
Interesting. A lot of fish get more aggressive when spawning. I know part of it is to show off, or to protect the babies/eggs... however I also have wondered if the extra aggression towards shrimp during spawning has to do with needing more calories/energy. Most fish color up and show off while breeding, so it would make sense.
Epic. I have also, but they have mouths and are fish...so my assumption until proven otherwise by several sources....is that it eats shrimp if it is a fish with a mouth lol
Have kept neon tetras with cherry shrimp. Instead of a bunch of baby shrimp it would be like 2-3 from each batch. Also when I went on vacation, the neon tetras decided that the feeder blocks were less tasty so they went after all the adult cherries, even though similar in size.
Great video! Glad you recommended alternatives. Building a paludarium and got some cherry shrimp in a separate tank, but not enough waste to keep my plants going. Everything I read seemed contradictory. Gonna get some dwarf corydoras and mb a few ruby terras or microrasbora. Thanks for the recs!

Number 10: Ember tetras are not that bad. I have a growing colony of Orange Juice Neos and because the baby shrimp kinda match the color of the juvenile Embers, my tanks also grows, ( here's the thing; the Ember adults, if well fed don't harass the young Tetras or baby shrimp..) much like White Clouds don't hassle their tiny fry much if well fed. The mouths of Embers are pretty tiny so there's a point when the hatchling shrimp if they can hide for a few molts, get big enough to grant them some amnesty.
also what I did to give the shrimp more cover was buy a bunch of java moss and interesting rocks with holes in them. I put those towards the back and the shrimp love to make tunnels through the moss
Hey I'm a big fan of yours. I've just watched at least 7 vids of yours and some other youtubers. I have a few pets but when I came across the aqua scaping, paludarium, i just fell in love, so I've been seeing different animals that I never knew people owned. In some beautiful setups. I have 3 tanks up and running, and 4 more to come. 2 I'm building from my cracked 55 gallon. I didn't know how addictive this hobby can be. My family is mad cause i have tanks all over the house. I currently have a betta in my 20 gallon long with my shrimp. I'm pretty sure he's snacked on a few. He was in a 33 long divided tank, but one of the dividers failed (new one is on the way) and his next door neighbor tried to kill him. His fins are healing and he seems to be enjoying the live food. I hope my colony survives until I can move him! The shrimp do have hiding places, so I'm hopeful. I didn't think about guppies being a problem. That may be why my blue dream colony never took off.
@@Fishtory I have a betta in a 20 long that was chill with my shrimp colony until a few months ago when he just started mercing adults and leaving the carcass for the rest of the shrimp to finish off. We noticed shrimp number falling but there were enough shrimp to consume the bodies before we noticed them. It depends on how our betta feels, I guess.
This came up in my suggestion today. Your angelfish IS a Star!! I’m looking at my beautiful Bloody Mary shrimp and their roommates, the betta and the Amanos 😱 The betta is rather shy for a betta, but the Amanos are shameless. I have lots of plants and caves, hopefully enough. I hand feed the betta and the Amanos have learned to come up and take food from me, too. Now and then, one of my tiny Bloody Marys will approach and take a tidbit. I guess you can spoil shrimp LOL
Something that I like with this channel is that so much information about all fish shrimp I like and at the end of the day I know how to raise my little friends knowing their life history :)

We have. 10 gallon tank with some dwarf shrimp. My hub knew I wanted chili rasbora and saw a tank marked as such at Petsmart. Turned out they were bleeding fin tetras! Bad on you Petsmart! They hunted down my shrimp! 😭 Fortunately the store agreed to take them back.

Thank you kindly Patricia! I have been taking notes for years on what my survival rate of neocaridina shrimp are with various fish. I see a fully berried female and almost opening eggs with eye spots and approximate 10 - 30 babies depending on her size... then see how many lil guys end up appearing 2 months after she lays them
@@Fishtory how interresting i will just stick to my ghost shrimp they bred like crazy for me and no matter what fish so far that i put them with no one bothers them sometimes they over take my tanks one of these days i will give others a try at the moment i have none had to give them away to ocean floor joey made a video of it when he was here you can go to oceanfloor,com love this store but anyways i will get two from them and at the end of a month i will have over 12 in the tank (BABY GHOST SHRIMP)

Any fish is capable of eating shrimp in the first few weeks, but these happen to be fish that I've seen eat entire broods of shrimp in a day or two, where as most my tanks have shrimp and nano fish of some sort...so hiding spots are key, and if the shrimp is a project for profit, then having 0 fish is probably the way to go
Well, that’s it! I was hoping to go tomorrow to pick up some shrimp for my embers and Pygmy cories. Probably just as well, I have a couple amano shrimp that are on steroids in there also. Another shrimply informative video, Alexander. Thank you.
Had 100s of shrimp with larger fish that you would think they would eat them like Cochu's blue tetra and harlequin rasbora, big schools of them and not bother the shrimp at all. But had other smaller mild mannered fish that would wipe them out. For instance blue eye rainbows will wipe them out, but the larger threadfin rainbows mouths are too small.
Any tips on playing defense since I'm stuck with some guppy fry? I'm winning the algae fight (thanks for the tips!) and trying to push my plants quickly. I built some cover and so have the cactus wood pieces (forgot the name, chollo?). But any tips would be greatly appreciated. Some day, i hope to get white clouds and CPDs in there but I'm stuck with guppies for now.
All your fish look great as do your planted tanks as well. Mr. Puffer is adorable! I'd say, Chili Rasbora's are 99.5% safe with shrimp in a heavily planted tank. I've seen baby shrimp as young as a week old or possibly younger out in the open and my chili's leave them alone. My colony is growing nicely from my original 10.
@@Fishtory I'd be interested in knowing what you consider a nano fish? Their size/length that is. On a forum recently there was a conversation about that. A couple of us were in agreement with fish needing to be under an inch to be a nano fish while another person was saying you can go bigger. He named a few species but I don't remember what they were but I personally wouldn't have called them a nano fish.

Man, I love the selection of plants/rocks/wood you use... What lights are you using on these tanks? They all look like Finnex or something similar? All I remember is you like as bright as possible.
I have a cherry shrimp tank that I keep my guppy fry in. Yes, not full grown guppies but tiny little baby guppies. I've never seen any baby shrimp in that tank lol. So even guppy fry will eat the shrimp babies.
That is true....actually, they're more hungry and growing/ establishing dominance and i think they can potentially be more damaging than well fed adults

my amano shrimp definetly mess with the neocaridina shrimp! it sucks but i guess i gotta get the 3 amano shrimp, and i guess the feeder guppies out of my 2.6g shrimp tank! Thanks for the info!!
This list could have been 100 fish long, but i chose fish and one shrimp that I have personally kept in neocaridina shrimp colonies and kept track of. And yes, the Amanos will sometimes eat babies even...but mostly stress out the shrimp so badly that often times berried mothers abort their clutch :(
Great video, this really helped but i recently setup a white cloud tank. Do you think white clouds are ok? Ive heard they are sble to fit near adults in their mouths. Anyways, as long as the adults and maybe 1 or 2 of the shrimplets survive, im ok woth it.
i have a pair of amanos with my colony of neos. food aways gets to all of them as i feed a decent amount but not enough to get my snails to overpopulate and they all do well. pretty funny to see a amanos squabble for food. the real offenders were my green neons which i originally had [ the shrimp were all hiding ] and now they are way more active. the only tankmates are 2 hastatus and 3 pygmy cories
Can you make or do you have a video about aquarium critters? Flatworms, planaria, paramecium, copepoda and how these occupy a niche in the aquarium? These arevery secretive in tanks with more than snails, but often enough they are there.
I have one on auwfuchs and i have done several on hydra and planaria if you search through old videos, however a complete comprehensive episode on it all in general is a great suggestion! Thank you
@@Fishtory I breed Paramecium in a planted snail tank as Nano fish food. They love it and it is both very little work and a good looking fish food production method. To get the paramecium I took some hay from a meadow outside and 24 hours later removed it. After a while they became visible enough to be paramecium. Very good food for Danio margaritatus fry, but the guppy take it too.
Those are seriously THE WORST lol...i consider those a bit larger than "Nano", otherwise, those and medium sized to larger danios are awful shrimp choices. I had 6 cherry barbs wipe out a cherry red painted fire colony of 250+ shrimp in about 3 days! The shrimp tank was well planted, had lots of rock hides and spots for shrimp to find cover- but you're 100% correct, they were obliterated before i even knew what had happened

What do you think in regards to the lamb chop and harlequin rasboras with red cherry shrimp? I have a planted setup with cholla wood. It houses red cherry shrimp, neon tetras, lamb chop rasboras and harlequin rasboras.
You know, they are all a toss up... neon tetras will eat babies frequently and hunt them down, where as the other rasboras seen to only easy them when they swim past or are sitting out on a leaf or stone very obviously....with enough hiding spots it's fine even with guppies and endlers...however you need to keep them well fed and associating food with flake or pellets. If you feed live worms or insects, they definitely hunt a great deal more. Hope this info helps. Thanks!
@@Fishtory Yes it does help a great deal. Now I'm living myself for getting the 15 neons. I notice them more on there lower end of the tank and the rasboras higher up. Those meetings sure look great, but I'll probably rehome them to the betta tank. He has 10 gallons all to himself. Looks like he's going to have company. I really want my shrimp colony to get really big.
i have stiphodon goby with shrimps and i can confirm they behave like otocinclus they are ignoring the shrimp as long if they have lots of places to graze and you also give them meaty supplements like that mosquito larvae, the meaty supplements depends on species though some are completely algae and biofilm grazer so they completely ignore your shrimps but since yours take some mosquito larvae i assume that is the one that need meaty supplement
I also have hillstream loach in the tank which are not a problem, also half beaks who never bother the shrimp. But I'm still suspicious the gobies are keeping down the number of baby shrimp. Thinking of adding CPDs.
@@dr8576 i think as long you have lots of grazing area and keep your goby well fed and lots of hiding area for shrimps should be okay, cpd also awesome but if you still have problem maintaining your shrimp colony number i won't really add new fish until it is established good luck with your tank!
Some Phoenix Rasbora i see tend to look more faded than others. Do they vary their level of intensity based on their surroundings/mood etc or is the variation in colour just from the different light set ups? I really like the Somphongsi, but they're so tricky to source here in the UK. I would love to put together a heavily planted tank for a big school of them along with some shrimp. 👍
Exactly, my friend! These ones are pheonix rasboras and glow even brighter than chilis when eating, breeding or in a tank alone, but they change color and the ones in the video are shy with the somphongsi school always taking center stage.
This is amazing! As all your videos are! You mentioned in your video that chilli rasboras are a good option because they won’t pray on shrimp babies, I’ve read a lot of differing opinions on this so just wondered if you have experience or know this to be true? I’m at the very start with my fancy red tiger caridina colony so really want every baby to survive. Thank you very much😁
With those shrimp I'd keep them alone...maybe a nerite snail or otocinctlus...anything else will theoretically, eat a few babies in the first 2 weeks. This list is more for adults...or tanks where enough babies being born to not worry about 25% or less being eaten... but with caridina being slower growers and just as tiny, I'd leave them out until that colony is 100+ shrimp
Would neon tetras work if the tank is heavily planted with hiding spots? I hear people say they have good luck with them but I didn't know if you would lump them in with ember tetras. Edit: nevermind, heard it at the very end lol
Haha no worries... yes they work, but once in a blue moon youll find one tetra that aquires a taste for baby shrimp...if you notice one stalking the babies, its helpful to remove that one problem "wolf neon tetra"
When I knew nothing, I had thriving red cherry colony in a tank overstocked with neons. Shrimp were crawling in the open on all the surfaces, so they felt safe I guess.
Thx 4 all the info. As I mentioned b4 & learned that I shouldn't have put my tiny blue diamond shrimp in w/ the 1 Molly that I had in 1 tank. However, I have 3 of my tiny blue shrimp in w/ my Glowlight tetra & the shrimp seemed to be doing well. I have plants, I just don't know if it's considered heavily. When they were tiny, they would hide in the dense part of the hornwort
Totally understandable. I've had to try about 40 combos and ask people who've kept shrimp twice as long as i have, before figuring out which ones seem to work well
@@Fishtory Well, it seemed like I still have 1 of my Blue Diamond shrimp, in the tank w/ the Molly. I thought the Molly ate them all. The shrimp was smart enough 2 keep hidden in the Anubis. I couldn't believe it! Now I think he's big enough to not be eaten.
Watched this video more than 3 times. Love it. Trying to setup a no filter low tech tank with just plant lights. already have red cherry shrimps and plants thriving for the last 4 months. have 6-8 ember tetras and they are doing well,. Have nearly 50+ RCS babies :) Can I put some zebra glo danios? I really love those blues and purples ?
You can depending on tank size. They swim a ton, jump out of the tank frequently, and will eat shrimp babies. I would recommend Tinwini danios, gold ring danios or meeting halfway between cpd and zebra danios...the Chopra glowlights are nice and less nippy
@@Fishtory Its a 30 gallon tank. Started with 10 shrimp and in 4 months, I bet there are 100 now. Do I need something that keeps shrimp population in check? PS: But I dont want to kill the shrimp either :(
Incredible today i saw a serpae with half of the size of the shrimp eating him alive. He ate head and afterwords a bigger serpae ate the rest of the body. The most surprisingly and brutal thing that i ever saw!!!
I got 2 bettas in my community tank, guppies, ember tetras even platties. My Cherry shrimp are safe, even my baby guppies swimming safely on the surface 😊
lol i've just moved a puffer to a new shrmp tank because i saw that there are some strange unidentified worms in the aquariums and so i was hoping that the puffer will clear these worms out for me and it did. but i didnt think that puffer will threat adult shrimps, anyway i'll try to move the puffer back out again before i get shrimp babys. but puffers are fast, i am still having difficulties of netting it out.
I am surprised by many of the questions here..obviously not many have gone fishing, otherwise you would know what shrimp are used for, and with good reason.
Too late. Wish I watched your video a couple of weeks ago. Luckily my shrimps, silver tip tetras and betta have been in quarantine separately. I now have betta and silvertip in the new aquarium and shrimp in a small 5 gallon because they’re less than a month old. My question is.. do I add the cherry shrimp when they’re adult? Will the adult get eaten too?
Currently have 5 male dwarf panda guppies in my 5 gallon. I’m thinking about blue cherries. It is heavily planted. The guppies are fully grown and they’re about the size of an endler females, they’re not bigger than an inch. Do you think it’s worth a try, I’d like the population to be sustainable.
I have a ghost shrimp population problem so I need some nano fish that will eat the shrimp. I have a betta in the 10 gallon tank but he doesn't eat the shrimp or fry.
Hopefully... i think in that size theyll probably be okay... you may want to feed some sort of live food *if they do start hunting the shrimp...if they havent been hunting baby shrimp, id avoid live food, because it kinda makes them instinctually ready to hunt

My amano will act like rabid dogs while feeding especially if its blood worms. They'll actually bow guard the food lol
I found that the 2 Amanos would harass my 'quiet' Betta. I think that this eventually led to his demise... too much stress.

I've kept Male and female Betta's with Neo's. Baby survival is low but the colony is certainly sustainable

Yes badis, gouramis and medium danios or tetras are rutheless...embers are laid back, but any baby swimming by...will get their attention in my tanks, when i observed closely. So i moved the embers and swapped reeds and Phoenix or Merah rasboras instead and now the shrimp have doubled quickly! Thanks for watching!
Interesting. A lot of fish get more aggressive when spawning. I know part of it is to show off, or to protect the babies/eggs... however I also have wondered if the extra aggression towards shrimp during spawning has to do with needing more calories/energy. Most fish color up and show off while breeding, so it would make sense.
Never would have thought about Amano shrimp. Almost bought some today to put some in my shrimp tank...Glad I changed my mind.

Have kept neon tetras with cherry shrimp. Instead of a bunch of baby shrimp it would be like 2-3 from each batch. Also when I went on vacation, the neon tetras decided that the feeder blocks were less tasty so they went after all the adult cherries, even though similar in size.

Number 10: Ember tetras are not that bad. I have a growing colony of Orange Juice Neos and because the baby shrimp kinda match the color of the juvenile Embers, my tanks also grows, ( here's the thing; the Ember adults, if well fed don't harass the young Tetras or baby shrimp..) much like White Clouds don't hassle their tiny fry much if well fed. The mouths of Embers are pretty tiny so there's a point when the hatchling shrimp if they can hide for a few molts, get big enough to grant them some amnesty.
100% its just the babies, but i always hear people say theyre "totally shrimp safe" so they made the list
also what I did to give the shrimp more cover was buy a bunch of java moss and interesting rocks with holes in them. I put those towards the back and the shrimp love to make tunnels through the moss

Hey I'm a big fan of yours. I've just watched at least 7 vids of yours and some other youtubers. I have a few pets but when I came across the aqua scaping, paludarium, i just fell in love, so I've been seeing different animals that I never knew people owned. In some beautiful setups. I have 3 tanks up and running, and 4 more to come. 2 I'm building from my cracked 55 gallon. I didn't know how addictive this hobby can be. My family is mad cause i have tanks all over the house. I currently have a betta in my 20 gallon long with my shrimp. I'm pretty sure he's snacked on a few. He was in a 33 long divided tank, but one of the dividers failed (new one is on the way) and his next door neighbor tried to kill him. His fins are healing and he seems to be enjoying the live food. I hope my colony survives until I can move him! The shrimp do have hiding places, so I'm hopeful. I didn't think about guppies being a problem. That may be why my blue dream colony never took off.
Yeah, some betta are fine and not very aggressive, but I've also had some that are sharks and hunt down any baby shrimp as a hobby more than even food
@@Fishtory I have a betta in a 20 long that was chill with my shrimp colony until a few months ago when he just started mercing adults and leaving the carcass for the rest of the shrimp to finish off.
We noticed shrimp number falling but there were enough shrimp to consume the bodies before we noticed them.
It depends on how our betta feels, I guess.
You have to look at the eyes....if they are pointing in different directions they are probably crazy and homicidal.
This came up in my suggestion today. Your angelfish IS a Star!! I’m looking at my beautiful Bloody Mary shrimp and their roommates, the betta and the Amanos 😱 The betta is rather shy for a betta, but the Amanos are shameless. I have lots of plants and caves, hopefully enough. I hand feed the betta and the Amanos have learned to come up and take food from me, too. Now and then, one of my tiny Bloody Marys will approach and take a tidbit. I guess you can spoil shrimp LOL

We have. 10 gallon tank with some dwarf shrimp. My hub knew I wanted chili rasbora and saw a tank marked as such at Petsmart. Turned out they were bleeding fin tetras! Bad on you Petsmart! They hunted down my shrimp! 😭 Fortunately the store agreed to take them back.

I see a fully berried female and almost opening eggs with eye spots and approximate 10 - 30 babies depending on her size... then see how many lil guys end up appearing 2 months after she lays them

Any fish is capable of eating shrimp in the first few weeks, but these happen to be fish that I've seen eat entire broods of shrimp in a day or two, where as most my tanks have shrimp and nano fish of some sort...so hiding spots are key, and if the shrimp is a project for profit, then having 0 fish is probably the way to go
Well, that’s it! I was hoping to go tomorrow to pick up some shrimp for my embers and Pygmy cories. Probably just as well, I have a couple amano shrimp that are on steroids in there also.

Had 100s of shrimp with larger fish that you would think they would eat them like Cochu's blue tetra and harlequin rasbora, big schools of them and not bother the shrimp at all. But had other smaller mild mannered fish that would wipe them out. For instance blue eye rainbows will wipe them out, but the larger threadfin rainbows mouths are too small.

All your fish look great as do your planted tanks as well. Mr. Puffer is adorable! I'd say, Chili Rasbora's are 99.5% safe with shrimp in a heavily planted tank. I've seen baby shrimp as young as a week old or possibly younger out in the open and my chili's leave them alone. My colony is growing nicely from my original 10.
Totally... most the fish i recommended will allow 60 to 90% of the babies to survive - from my experience.
@@Fishtory I'd be interested in knowing what you consider a nano fish? Their size/length that is. On a forum recently there was a conversation about that. A couple of us were in agreement with fish needing to be under an inch to be a nano fish while another person was saying you can go bigger. He named a few species but I don't remember what they were but I personally wouldn't have called them a nano fish.

They are actually Twinstar ea600s and then fluval 3.0s usually on my planted tanks

I have a cherry shrimp tank that I keep my guppy fry in. Yes, not full grown guppies but tiny little baby guppies. I've never seen any baby shrimp in that tank lol. So even guppy fry will eat the shrimp babies.
That is true....actually, they're more hungry and growing/ establishing dominance and i think they can potentially be more damaging than well fed adults

This list could have been 100 fish long, but i chose fish and one shrimp that I have personally kept in neocaridina shrimp colonies and kept track of. And yes, the Amanos will sometimes eat babies even...but mostly stress out the shrimp so badly that often times berried mothers abort their clutch :(
Great video, this really helped but i recently setup a white cloud tank. Do you think white clouds are ok? Ive heard they are sble to fit near adults in their mouths. Anyways, as long as the adults and maybe 1 or 2 of the shrimplets survive, im ok woth it.
i have a pair of amanos with my colony of neos. food aways gets to all of them as i feed a decent amount but not enough to get my snails to overpopulate and they all do well. pretty funny to see a amanos squabble for food. the real offenders were my green neons which i originally had [ the shrimp were all hiding ] and now they are way more active. the only tankmates are 2 hastatus and 3 pygmy cories

Can you make or do you have a video about aquarium critters? Flatworms, planaria, paramecium, copepoda and how these occupy a niche in the aquarium? These arevery secretive in tanks with more than snails, but often enough they are there.
I have one on auwfuchs and i have done several on hydra and planaria if you search through old videos, however a complete comprehensive episode on it all in general is a great suggestion! Thank you
@@Fishtory I breed Paramecium in a planted snail tank as Nano fish food. They love it and it is both very little work and a good looking fish food production method.
To get the paramecium I took some hay from a meadow outside and 24 hours later removed it. After a while they became visible enough to be paramecium.
Very good food for Danio margaritatus fry, but the guppy take it too.
Add cherry barbs to the list. Had a few dozen shrimp and 5 barbs. The barbs decimated the shrimp.
Those are seriously THE WORST lol...i consider those a bit larger than "Nano", otherwise, those and medium sized to larger danios are awful shrimp choices.
I had 6 cherry barbs wipe out a cherry red painted fire colony of 250+ shrimp in about 3 days! The shrimp tank was well planted, had lots of rock hides and spots for shrimp to find cover- but you're 100% correct, they were obliterated before i even knew what had happened
So peacock gudgeon isn't going to become my accent fish in a shrimp and nano fish tank...

What do you think in regards to the lamb chop and harlequin rasboras with red cherry shrimp? I have a planted setup with cholla wood. It houses red cherry shrimp, neon tetras, lamb chop rasboras and harlequin rasboras.
You know, they are all a toss up... neon tetras will eat babies frequently and hunt them down, where as the other rasboras seen to only easy them when they swim past or are sitting out on a leaf or stone very obviously....with enough hiding spots it's fine even with guppies and endlers...however you need to keep them well fed and associating food with flake or pellets. If you feed live worms or insects, they definitely hunt a great deal more. Hope this info helps. Thanks!
@@Fishtory Yes it does help a great deal. Now I'm living myself for getting the 15 neons. I notice them more on there lower end of the tank and the rasboras higher up. Those meetings sure look great, but I'll probably rehome them to the betta tank. He has 10 gallons all to himself. Looks like he's going to have company. I really want my shrimp colony to get really big.

What about stiphodon gobies? Supposed to be biofilm grazers, but they go after mosquito larvae.
They seem okay in theory, i just haven't tried the combo personally...good idea though. Panda loaches are pretty safe top

i have stiphodon goby with shrimps and i can confirm they behave like otocinclus they are ignoring the shrimp as long if they have lots of places to graze and you also give them meaty supplements like that mosquito larvae, the meaty supplements depends on species though some are completely algae and biofilm grazer so they completely ignore your shrimps but since yours take some mosquito larvae i assume that is the one that need meaty supplement
I also have hillstream loach in the tank which are not a problem, also half beaks who never bother the shrimp. But I'm still suspicious the gobies are keeping down the number of baby shrimp. Thinking of adding CPDs.
@@dr8576 i think as long you have lots of grazing area and keep your goby well fed and lots of hiding area for shrimps should be okay, cpd also awesome but if you still have problem maintaining your shrimp colony number i won't really add new fish until it is established good luck with your tank!
Some Phoenix Rasbora i see tend to look more faded than others. Do they vary their level of intensity based on their surroundings/mood etc or is the variation in colour just from the different light set ups? I really like the Somphongsi, but they're so tricky to source here in the UK. I would love to put together a heavily planted tank for a big school of them along with some shrimp. 👍
Exactly, my friend! These ones are pheonix rasboras and glow even brighter than chilis when eating, breeding or in a tank alone, but they change color and the ones in the video are shy with the somphongsi school always taking center stage.

Some local breeder crossed the yellow tiger endlers with some orange star endlers if I recall

I have 5 kuhliloach in my 20 long with cheer shrimp but it has guppy grass very thick will the loaches hunt the shrimplets
They probably will, but probably won't be able to ear very many, luckily

This is amazing! As all your videos are! You mentioned in your video that chilli rasboras are a good option because they won’t pray on shrimp babies, I’ve read a lot of differing opinions on this so just wondered if you have experience or know this to be true? I’m at the very start with my fancy red tiger caridina colony so really want every baby to survive. Thank you very much😁
With those shrimp I'd keep them alone...maybe a nerite snail or otocinctlus...anything else will theoretically, eat a few babies in the first 2 weeks. This list is more for adults...or tanks where enough babies being born to not worry about 25% or less being eaten... but with caridina being slower growers and just as tiny, I'd leave them out until that colony is 100+ shrimp

Haha no worries... yes they work, but once in a blue moon youll find one tetra that aquires a taste for baby shrimp...if you notice one stalking the babies, its helpful to remove that one problem "wolf neon tetra"
When I knew nothing, I had thriving red cherry colony in a tank overstocked with neons.
Shrimp were crawling in the open on all the surfaces, so they felt safe I guess.
Thx 4 all the info. As I mentioned b4 & learned that I shouldn't have put my tiny blue diamond shrimp in w/ the 1 Molly that I had in 1 tank. However, I have 3 of my tiny blue shrimp in w/ my Glowlight tetra & the shrimp seemed to be doing well. I have plants, I just don't know if it's considered heavily. When they were tiny, they would hide in the dense part of the hornwort
Totally understandable. I've had to try about 40 combos and ask people who've kept shrimp twice as long as i have, before figuring out which ones seem to work well
@@Fishtory Well, it seemed like I still have 1 of my Blue Diamond shrimp, in the tank w/ the Molly. I thought the Molly ate them all. The shrimp was smart enough 2 keep hidden in the Anubis. I couldn't believe it! Now I think he's big enough to not be eaten.
Watched this video more than 3 times. Love it. Trying to setup a no filter low tech tank with just plant lights. already have red cherry shrimps and plants thriving for the last 4 months. have 6-8 ember tetras and they are doing well,. Have nearly 50+ RCS babies :)

You can depending on tank size. They swim a ton, jump out of the tank frequently, and will eat shrimp babies. I would recommend Tinwini danios, gold ring danios or meeting halfway between cpd and zebra danios...the Chopra glowlights are nice and less nippy

Incredible today i saw a serpae with half of the size of the shrimp eating him alive. He ate head and afterwords a bigger serpae ate the rest of the body. The most surprisingly and brutal thing that i ever saw!!!

lol i've just moved a puffer to a new shrmp tank because i saw that there are some strange unidentified worms in the aquariums and so i was hoping that the puffer will clear these worms out for me and it did. but i didnt think that puffer will threat adult shrimps, anyway i'll try to move the puffer back out again before i get shrimp babys. but puffers are fast, i am still having difficulties of netting it out.
Every fish is different...especially puffers, but id keep a close eye on this situation

Too late. Wish I watched your video a couple of weeks ago. Luckily my shrimps, silver tip tetras and betta have been in quarantine separately. I now have betta and silvertip in the new aquarium and shrimp in a small 5 gallon because they’re less than a month old. My question is.. do I add the cherry shrimp when they’re adult? Will the adult get eaten too?

Currently have 5 male dwarf panda guppies in my 5 gallon. I’m thinking about blue cherries. It is heavily planted. The guppies are fully grown and they’re about the size of an endler females, they’re not bigger than an inch.
Do you think it’s worth a try, I’d like the population to be sustainable.

I have a ghost shrimp population problem so I need some nano fish that will eat the shrimp. I have a betta in the 10 gallon tank but he doesn't eat the shrimp or fry.
Pea puffers, any cichlid or dwarf cichlids will both make short work of the shrimp

Hopefully... i think in that size theyll probably be okay... you may want to feed some sort of live food *if they do start hunting the shrimp...if they havent been hunting baby shrimp, id avoid live food, because it kinda makes them instinctually ready to hunt
