Great video and I have nothing to add except that you showed 2 different fish when talking about the new Pencilfish. The first pic you showed with the full body red was the Lake Amaya pencilfish, the second picture is the Cenepa Super Red. Both discovered last year but from different tributaries. I'm also not sure about the advice to keep 8. For the Cenepa Super red, I have not been able to keep more than 4-5 males in my densely planted 15 gallon, as one will usually get killed or chased out of the tank. They are extremely aggressive and do not school at all. I honestly think they would be happier alone, or just with a female or 2. Either way keep up the great work, your videos are amazing and always deeply appreciated!!
Thanks. And yes i snuck a photo of both new pencils in lol good eye. But i know a few people who collected the cenepas in peru ...dr. Mazerollz and he kept dozens in a 40 breeder while theh settled in. So im not so sure abiht best numbers to stock...but yes a pair works too. Thanks for your input
I got some H. metae and they don’t seem shy at all, they act just like a black neon. Love the sky blue line. Definitely a full size tetra perhaps up to 4cm
You know that's fascinating. There must be 2 distinct populations. Some * the ones I have had for the last 3 years*- are a soft baby blue with hues of lilac and neon light blue. All staying under 2 inches. However years ago I had some the size of the skirt tetras ....like 2 or 3 inches long and almost as tall. But the colors were green and purple hues
I feel like a lot of people know about them now... but also ive just done videos with them a few times so i wanted to feature other fish too... and they only eat live food which means a lot of people just kill them
Great list! I'd go with Rainbow darters, pygmy sunfish, checkerboard cichlids, coccina complex bettas, betta channoides, licorice gourami phoenicurus maybe, samurai gourami, a killi or two, there's so many...
This was a great video! I definitely learned about some fish I didn’t know existed. My friend has a 55g that is all nano fish! It’s a beautiful set up. Now I want to set up a new tank with nanos ❤
I’d like to video Alex. Here’s a fun fact for you; a doctor told my fiancé that it’s easy to numb the pain centers, but it’s almost impossible to numb the sensation of the temperature and pressure centers(at least in the eyes)
i had those blue tetras, and i was so excited to get them, but they did not behave at all like you described or i expected. i had 10 of them, plenty of plants, and after adding them to my tank they all scattered into their own little section in each area of the tank. they’d stay in their sections almost always, and if another one of them ever came anywhere near another’s section, the one whose section it was would immediately attack the other and be incredibly territorial. they never shoaled together and were not at all what i was expecting of tetras. i’ve read that there may be 2 species sold under the same name as “blue tetra”, and i’ve seen other people mention seeing behavior similar to what i witnessed. but regardless i would not recommend them to anyone expecting typical tetra behavior. they sure are beautiful, however, especially during mating season when the males develop bright purplish-magenta almost hot pink patches on their tails
Loved this video. Really want to make an effort to support ethically sourced fish so these links are a huge help. Now to convince my wife to let me get those new pencil fish - lol
I either have or want most of the fish on this list. Well chosen! Good video. Can you do the same type of list for rare and overlooked medium sized fish?
Currently doing a planted 29g. Wanting to put a small school of colorful dudes in there. Maybe some cherry shrimp too. comparing this video to your shrimp with fish video looking for matches. Thanks for the knowledge.
i love the galaxy rasboras and the chili rasbora and pygmy cories. the fish store in town finally got some but the last year and a half i couldnt find any anywhere!
I keep Celestial Pearl Danios in a 45g planted and they are so entertaining to watch chase each other and spar, of course I have more fry than I know what to do with lol
Hi from New Zealand! I’ve got four licorice gouramis they are great little fish, they are young ish are are just starting courtship and display. I was aware how rare they are and i could not resist creating a nice tanin rich environment for them, the species web site and society are a excellent source of information. Good you tube show mate , keep up the good work!!! 27:03
I thought khulis were my favorite loach, but those panda loaches are adorable. Australia has some other Psuedomogil species that are equally as gorgeous as the P. Luimatus. Some actually look near identical but lack that neon strip. A really cool genus of fish
Gettin' some conveniently timed videos lately. While I'm technically a week late, I decided that I'll be finding some nano fish for my 20-gal long to put with my Cory and Oto cats. I'm not 100% sure which 1-2 species I'm gonna get, and I won't be able to watch it all tonight (getting late), but I will watch this through tomorrow. Appreciate ya' mate.
Cheers! And best of luck... just remeber get enough fish that they can socialize properly... tiny fish make nearly no waste load. Also you can try and get 2 or 3 species that all use either the top bottom or middle water...one snail or some shrimp that occupy a cleaning role and left over food eating role.
Watching this it just gave me an idea for one of your videos if you're interested but why do some fish have the pectoral fins flap at the top of their body and others flap at the bottom watching these fish with their pectoral fins flapping at the top of their body line made me think of it, which leads me to another video idea why do fish have the different shapes that they have how does it work from an evolutionary standpoint
I love that idea! Thanks for asking. It will be guessing on my part for some things without research on the matter... but some of the mating display finage is very unique and interesting
Great list. Some of my favorites and some new ones. What’s the secret to micro rasboras. I’ve tried a couple of times with green, chili and maculatus and they all die within 5-6 months? I do fine with tetras, rainbows, barbs, etc. I even do fine with harlequin rasboras in the same tank, but the others . . .
If Goodeidae count as nano. I'm all in on Xenotoca Doadrioi San Marcos!!! There are also some great looking Swordtails near the same areas as the San Marcos are. Super cool video, thanks bruddah!!🤠
Love your videos! I have a planted 30 gallon tank with lots of excess filtration(tidal 55 packed with media, and two medium sponge filters). I have 18 luminatus with 10 Venezuelan corydoras and a juvenile Bn pleco(he will get a new home as he gets bigger). Loads of ramshorn and trumpet snails, and a handful of nerites. Wondering if you think I could add some other nano with them, maybe 10-12 at the most. There are plants and floating logs up top with lots of driftwood, plants and hides on the bottom. Would this be too many fish? I do a 50 percent water change every two weeks, and top up evaporated water weekly.
lol Noone told my Pseudomugil luminatus, Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish, that they are surppose to swim around the top part of the tank And they love to disagree with all their tank mates Especialy my Celestichthys erythromicron, Emerald Dwarf Rasbora, but maybe thats because they also like to make up & spwan together They are ACE
What a nice intro ! I wondered about the Von Rio tetra when I saw them in an earlier video of yours, and I have been very interested in getting some. I am converting my heavily planted 29 gallon tank to a nano fish tank (except the 8 cory cats, but they don't bother anyone). Along with the coreys, I have 10 chili rasbora, 4 celestial pearl danio, any number of cherry shrimp and two furcata rainbows. The furcata rainbows don't bother the small fish at all, much to my surprise. I really enjoy the nano fish. In your experience, how many Von Rio tetra do you think is safe to add to the tank? I change at least 5-6 gallons of water weekly in the tank and test the water 2 X a month. I know it would be an educated guess for you, but I'd like your input. Thank you for the great videos. I haven't been able to catch your live streams for a while, much to my dismay. I'm usually working. Bless your heart, and thank you again for all you do. All my best to Laura too! xo
@@Fishtory real talk though this is my favorite fish page. Learning a lot from you so thank you. Just setup a 20 gallon long. Had my filter in my brothers tank for a couple weeks then put it in mine. About 2 and a half weeks into the cycle. So hard to just look at my tank without the fish in it. Plan on getting some neon tetras, male and female German blue ram and a few panda Cory's.
I am in the process of adding some somphong rasboras to my 120 gallon planted tank. Their only tank mates will be some Caridina shrimp and Parotocinclus so I am hoping they will colony breed.
Make sure to habe pearl weed, a carpet of baby tears or tons of moss/Susswasstertang at the bottom.... like 5 inches thick...or leaves would work....but then the fry are out of sight for parents... that tank will be epic!
@@Fishtory The tank has a dense carpet as well as thick moss on the hardscape. Though going forward I guess I should put the trimmings in an empty tank instead of a Ziplock bag like I've been doing!
Cracking up thinking of them as a lovely luminous glass of mountain dew. fantastic fish choices. Despite me laughing at description you do describe then aptly and uniquely..
@@Fishtory I dunno if I think it's usually too obscure. I do appreciate that it's actually unique descriptions though. I know there's only so many ways a fish can be described but I really hate info that's just regurgitated word for word. Your descriptions actually show your own observations, an actual familiarity with the fish and plants and not getting bogged down in repeating a word for word reading of what the first twenty google results will give. It's appreciated.

I enjoy this style of video as a nice change up. I have a Dan’s gift card burning a whole in my hand while deciding what to order.
Ooo lucky!
Those gold ring danios looks Amazing. I’ve only seen them a few LSF’s. Ive never had any interest in them until I’ve seen yours. They look amazing!
They're amazing for a nano 5 gallon scape or blackwater nano setup... especially in real sun rays!
Hej Alex, wow - good channel. ❤
But, how often do you feed your fish?
Like boraras naevus most. I keep. 😊
I feed them every 2 or 3 days usually... then they have live cultured scuds and blackworms or various critters to forage for.
Thanks for sharing! I love it!
You are so welcome!
WOW this was a fun one!
I'm surprised pygmy sunfish didn't make it into your list but nice video.
I feel like a lot of people know about them now... but also ive just done videos with them a few times so i wanted to feature other fish too... and they only eat live food which means a lot of people just kill them
Hello Everybody. Love the pretty nano fish!
I got 9 ember tetras, and they're so fun. 😺
Love this video good job 👏 super informative, definitely gonna get me some of those green tetras
Thanks! Its a bit long...i cant help myself haha
@@Fishtory I actually prefer your longer videos I feel like am actually learning something lol
Great list!
I'd go with
Rainbow darters, pygmy sunfish, checkerboard cichlids, coccina complex bettas, betta channoides, licorice gourami phoenicurus maybe, samurai gourami, a killi or two, there's so many...
All your videos are killer, the variety is nice🙂 keep on keepin on!🙂👍🏻💯⭐️
Thanks my friend!
i like all your vids bro. Just keep a variety of them.
This was a great video! I definitely learned about some fish I didn’t know existed. My friend has a 55g that is all nano fish! It’s a beautiful set up. Now I want to set up a new tank with nanos ❤
Glad it was interesting for you. I love big tanks full of nano fish! You can have so many types!
I’d like to video Alex. Here’s a fun fact for you; a doctor told my fiancé that it’s easy to numb the pain centers, but it’s almost impossible to numb the sensation of the temperature and pressure centers(at least in the eyes)
Hmmm i never really considered that lol. True i suppose
Awesome list! I'm glad you chose less common fish! I'll have to do some hunting for a couple of these I'd like to keep - part of the fun though!
Right on. Thanks
Great video some gorgeous nano fish 👌
i had those blue tetras, and i was so excited to get them, but they did not behave at all like you described or i expected. i had 10 of them, plenty of plants, and after adding them to my tank they all scattered into their own little section in each area of the tank. they’d stay in their sections almost always, and if another one of them ever came anywhere near another’s section, the one whose section it was would immediately attack the other and be incredibly territorial. they never shoaled together and were not at all what i was expecting of tetras. i’ve read that there may be 2 species sold under the same name as “blue tetra”, and i’ve seen other people mention seeing behavior similar to what i witnessed. but regardless i would not recommend them to anyone expecting typical tetra behavior. they sure are beautiful, however, especially during mating season when the males develop bright purplish-magenta almost hot pink patches on their tails
Loved this video. Really want to make an effort to support ethically sourced fish so these links are a huge help. Now to convince my wife to let me get those new pencil fish - lol
Hahah you and I both!
Thanks for the awesome content. You rock!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support big time
An actual list of 'rare' Nano fish that isn't the same old Neon/Cardinal Tetras, CPDs and Scarlet Badis. Nice job.
Just want to say thanks Alex always love the videos very interesting all the time and amazing information...🦐🐟🐠
My pleasure! Thanks
I either have or want most of the fish on this list. Well chosen! Good video. Can you do the same type of list for rare and overlooked medium sized fish?
Totally! Thank you also
Currently doing a planted 29g. Wanting to put a small school of colorful dudes in there. Maybe some cherry shrimp too. comparing this video to your shrimp with fish video looking for matches. Thanks for the knowledge.
Good luck!
Love your videos, and this one is great as usual 🙂
Thank you very much!
I have five of #1 in my rimless 14 gal . Seen these for the first time while looking for a top layer fish and bought them immediately.
Beautiful eh?
@@Fishtory yes
i love the galaxy rasboras and the chili rasbora and pygmy cories. the fish store in town finally got some but the last year and a half i couldnt find any anywhere!
Better start breeding them at home!.
Hehe. Ive bred all 3 species myself. I'm sure you'd do great
My absolute favorite new fish, the Red Neon Blue Eyed Rainbowfish, which I now have 25 in my 60G Nature tank.
Mountain dew was the perfect description
Glad you liked that!
I keep Celestial Pearl Danios in a 45g planted and they are so entertaining to watch chase each other and spar, of course I have more fry than I know what to do with lol
Thats super cool! Id love to see it
Great video buddy well put together
Thanks, infinally saved up the money for decent editing software ...now im learning to use it haha
That is awesome! Im sure theyll love their new decor!
Im keeping emerald eye rasboras currently. They are beautiful and subtle. Ive had no problems with jumping either but they are shy.
Yes those are lovely!
I thought khulis were my favorite loach, but those panda loaches are adorable.
Australia has some other Psuedomogil species that are equally as gorgeous as the P. Luimatus. Some actually look near identical but lack that neon strip. A really cool genus of fish
Totally
Nice wee video mate
Lol half hour... ill work on being less educational next fluff video lol
@@Fishtory honestly i like your videos, im 51, i am a good student i listen intently mate lol 😉👌🏻👍🏻🏴
As you said, it's a nice break. I don't care which you do, just keep doing them.
Thanks
I even do fine with harlequin rasboras in the same tank, but the others . . .
Acidic water and lots of plants to hide in... dimmer lights. That all helps a lot
You always have the best topics man Rambo 71 8 from Brooklyn New York big up my man👌🏽😁👍🏽
Thanks man
If Goodeidae count as nano. I'm all in on Xenotoca Doadrioi San Marcos!!! There are also some great looking Swordtails near the same areas as the San Marcos are. Super cool video, thanks bruddah!!🤠
Haha i almost include them! But they get like 2 inches or more
Love your videos!
I love that combo too
What a nice intro !
All my best to Laura too! xo
Aww you are always so thoughtful and supportive of the channel, Laura and I. Thank you so much!
I liked this video and your taste in fish.
Great video, I love the rare fish and not just the same basic fish
Thanks for watching! I try and keep my lists a bit more whimsical haha
Really interesting... x
Why thank you. I thought so too haha
More, Alex!!! More! 😊
A other good video!!! Thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks though
This channel deserves 1 million subs
Why thank you! 😊 if you want to make like 999,999 email and RUclips accounts we could get there! Lol. Cheers
@@Fishtory hold my beer
@@Fishtory real talk though this is my favorite fish page. Learning a lot from you so thank you. Just setup a 20 gallon long. Had my filter in my brothers tank for a couple weeks then put it in mine. About 2 and a half weeks into the cycle. So hard to just look at my tank without the fish in it. Plan on getting some neon tetras, male and female German blue ram and a few panda Cory's.
@@camshan6873 its so worth it in the end!
Please make a video about drape fin barb
Haha i figured my usual language is too obscure and that most Americans would get the mountain dew thing 😅
