An extra smooth reaction💔🦅! Richard Page, the lead singer, is from Arizona. Broken Wings was released as the lead single from Mr Mister's 1985 album: Welcome To The Real World. It was written by Richard Page, Steve George and John Lang. It was produced by Mr Mister and Paul De Villiers. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Cash Box 100, #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #4 on the Mainstream Rock chart. It was a #1 chart hit in Canada and peaked within the top ten on the music charts in Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, Switzerland, UK and West Germany, and the top twenty on the music charts in Austria, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden.
The music video was directed by Oley Sassone. The driving scenes in the video were shot at the oil fields near Los Angeles International Airport, and also along the Pacific Coast Highway in Palos Verdes. The church is the San Fernando Mission, a historic building in the Mission Hills district of Los Angeles. VH1 went on the air in 1985, the same year this song was released. The video did very well on the network, and also on MTV, which was only four years old but had become kingmaker in the industry.
The song is about picking up the pieces of your life and moving on. There is a note of heartbreak, however, as the singer is asking the girl to spread her wings and fly away, hoping that love will bring her back. The line: "Take these broken wings and learn to fly", appears in The Beatles 1968 song: "Blackbird".
The band's record company, RCA Records, wanted to release an uptempo song first, but the band fought them on it and won out. Released ahead of the album, the song went to #1 US in December 1985, marking a breakthrough for the band, whose biggest hit from their first album was "Hunters of the Night," which peaked at #57. The band's follow-up single: "Kyrie", also went to #1.
In 2001, this song was sampled for a posthumous Tupac song: "Until The End Of Time", which featured Richard Page. It only reached #52 in the US but peaked at #4 in the UK.
On May 16, 2023 (Richard Page's 70th birthday), all 4 members of Mr Mister performed their song: "Broken Wings", together, their first performance together in about 12,500 days (a little over 34 years).
    Mr Mister Info 📰:
Mr Mister was a Rock band from Phoenix, Arizona and based in Los Angeles, California, active from 1982 until 1990. The band consisted of Richard Page on lead vocals and bass guitar, Steve George on keyboards/backing vocals, Pat Mastelotto on acoustic and electronic drums/percussion and Steve Farris on guitars/backing vocals. Mr Mister was the successor to the band: Pages, fronted by Richard Page and Steve George from 1978 to 1981. The discography of Mr Mister consists of four studio albums, two compilation albums, nine singles, and eight music videos.
Mr Mister was formed in 1982 by Richard Page and Steve George. Once the other two members, Steve Farris and Pat Mastelotto, joined the band, they were signed by RCA Records In 1984, Mr Mister released their debut album: I Wear The Face. The album peaked at number 170 on the Billboard 200 album chart but did not chart internationally. The band's album: I Wear The Face, contained the single: "Hunters Of The Night", which peaked at number 57 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The band's second album: Welcome To The Real World (1985), was their most successful album. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Internationally, it charted within the top 10 on the Canadian, Norwegian, UK and Swiss album charts. The album was certified three-times Platinum by Music Canada and Gold by the British Phonographic Industry. The album: Welcome To The Real World, produced four singles: "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" which topped the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the Canadian Singles Chart, and were certified gold by Music Canada. The singles: "Is It Love" (#8 Pop chart) and "Black/White", were also released.
They had several #1 MTV videos, and performed at the first MTV Spring Break show in 1986. That same year, Mr Mister had two Grammy Award nominations: Best Gospel Performance ("Healing Waters") and Best Pop Band Duo or Group. During this time, Mr Mister toured with other popular acts including Don Henley, The Bangles, Eurythmics, Tina Turner, Heart and Adam Ant.
Mr Mister released their third studio album: Go On..., in 1987. It peaked at number 55 on the Billboard 200 album chart. It charted within the top 15 on the Swedish, Norwegian, and Swiss album charts. The album appeared on the Canadian Albums Chart and was certified Gold by Music Canada. The album: Go On... spawned four singles, but only the song: "Something Real" appeared on music charts, appearing in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 (#29) and the Canadian Singles Chart (#38).
On the verge of releasing their fourth album: Pull, Steve Farris departed from the band over the direction of the group and Mr Mister subsequently broke up in 1990. From 1999 to 2010, seven compilation albums were released: Broken Wings The Encore Collection (1999), Best Selection (1999), Broken Wings Best Of Mister Mister (1999), The Best Of Mr Mister (2001), Masters (2002), Broken Wings (2010). The band's album: Pull, was finally released in 2010. Mr Mister followed the release of the album: Pull, with their eighth compilation album: Playlist The Best of Mr Mister (2011).
After leaving the group Steve Farris returned to being a studio session musician, he performed on Eros Ramazzotti’s Tutti Storie and on Celine Dion’s megaseller Falling Into You. In 1996, he contributed to former band mate Richard Page’s solo album as well as Edgar Winter’s album: Real Deal. In 1997 he toured with the Rock band Whitesnake and then returned to his hometown of Fremont, Nebraska. He contributed to the Nicolette Larson benefit tribute concert in February 1998. He also toured with Gary Wright and took some time off to pursue some other interests. Steve is still very much into painting, a gift from his late mother who was known throughout the Midwest as a famous watercolor artist. In December 1998, he contributed to the "Tribute To Carlos Vega" concert. He currently still lives in Fremont, Nebraska and continues to pick up studio session jobs as they come.
Steve George briefly resurfaced as a session singer for artists such as Toto, Richard Marx and Marc Jordan before joining Kenny Loggins as musical director from 1991 to 1997, contributing keyboards and background vocals on several albums and tours. He then toured with Jewel, as her keyboardist and background singer from 1998 to 2003. Having since retired from the music industry, he currently resides in Sedona, Arizona and occasionally sits in with local bands, most recently The Naughty Bits.
After the band broke up Pat Mastelotto did more studio session work for other bands including XTC, The Sugarcubes, Hall & Oates, Cock Robin, The Rembrandts, Jude Cole, Eddie Money, Tina Arena, Matthew Sweet, Julia Fordham, Robyn Hitchcock and David Sylvian. In 1991 Pat Mastelotto co-produced Peter Kingsbery's first solo album before being asked to join the Rock band King Crimson. He has been a member of King Crimson since 1994, resulting in him becoming their longest serving drummer.
After the group's dissolution Richard Page worked as a background singer for other artists and bands. He has written songs for popular artists such as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Dionne Warwick, and Josh Groban, among others. He released his first solo album: Shelter Me, in 1996. It featured the singles: "The Best Thing" and "My Oxygen", written by fellow 80s pop star Nik Kershaw. Based on a recommendation by his friend, songwriter Richard Marx, Ringo Starr approached Richard Page to join his 11th All-Starr Band and, in the summer of 2010, they embarked on a 32-date U.S. tour; in 2011 they embarked on a 40-date Europe tour. Richard Page also toured with Ringo's 12th All-Starr Band in the summer of 2012, 2013, and 2017.
Long after the band's dissolution, they were referred to in the 2009 song: "Hey, Soul Sister", by Train, with the line: "Ain't that Mr Mister on the radio, stereo?".
