    I've never seen a tutorial by you that didn't change the way I look at art. Every video is another watershed moment for me. You make things so easy to understand and apply, and your service to the art community is huge. IDK how many viewers you have, or supporters in general, but I gotta let you know that for the last half-decade, your videos have inspired me, and helped me grow as an artist. We don't even have the same style, but you have a way of breaking down universal concepts about art, and you do it so well.. Marco, dude, I don't know how you do it, but please keep doing it. Your work has weirdly made such an impact on my hobby that I just gotta say something. I'm a grown-ass man and you're seriously one of my heroes

      Bernard wow, thanks for that, Bernard! It's humbling to know that there are viewers out there who are benefitting from the lessons. And having repeat-viewers is something I never really considered would even happen when I first began this channel. I really enjoy putting the lessons together, and your encouragement only amplifies that :). Thanks again and all the best!

    "I think what lies at the heart of painting is a desire to return to childhood and maybe with some of the life experience we gain as adults. And, if you ask me, it is quite a profound and beautiful thing to strive for."

    I show this video to people all the time. Like. Every chance I get. I come back to it frequently when I feel lost in the weeds on a piece or like I'm going to be at that point soon. I don't know what it is about the way you break things down, it just clicks, it's such a solid foundation to step out from when I know I need a fresh approach. I wonder how many times I've even looked at this without stopping to say 'thanks'. (I'll skip it on all of my views following this one probably, but thanks.)

    I really love this series. I'm learning a lot about "basics" that aren't necessarily so basic, but you're breaking it all down in a very clear and accessible way. I rely heavily on tutorials like this for my art education, and I really appreciate what you do here.

    Thank you for the lesson Marco! I find the whole '10 minutes....' series very very very useful and perfectly explained. I'm not a painter, I'm photographer. But as I a photographer I know I must have my own visual language, my own voice, my own style. And photography is something like the little sister of painting. I believe one must learn the visual language through the way of painting if they want to be better photographer.

    Honestly I learned some of this doing my makeup. Everyone stresses the importance of blending, which it is important, but nobody clarifies that they don’t mean to blend into oblivion - sometimes having a discernible shape is important. Like, /this/ is where your eyelid stops being black. That was the color I had the most issue with.

    Really cool video. Another helpful thing to keep in mind I think is that Sargent and a lot of other artists always squint when they look at the subject or photo they are painting from. Doing that gets rid of a lot of small details and keeps your vision of the painting with large, simple, and clear shapes. A good line I read about that technique is " when you look at your drawing or painting with wide open eyes, it should look like your subject when you look at it with squinted eyes".

    • @marcobucci
      @marcobucci  7 лет назад +3

      Robert yes, great advice and relevant to this lesson for sure! Thanks.

  • @btCharlie_
    @btCharlie_ 6 лет назад +6

    Just a point here - if you struggle with seeing shapes in paintings, try applying a strong median filter on it. The shapes then pop up nicely, though sometimes I'd advice to convert to grey levels first.
    Now that I think about it, there may be an even better, clearer way - have the image in a programthat can binarize the image into black and white and adjust the threshold slider. The shapes in the painting should be basically bare in front of you.

    Your videos are helping me to become a better artist. I have the tendency to mold and blend my paintings but I would like to implement shapes and texture. I learned to look at shapes long ago but I did not know what kind of shapes appealed the eye. This video helped my current painting reach the next level. I will be using more s, c and line shapes.Thank you :)

    In Mongolia, where I’m from, we call art classes Dursleh Urlag which means “Shaping Art” and I never really paid much attention to this name until you said shapes are more important to art than blending.
    Btw this is the 3rd time I’m watching this video since last year. And these lessons are slowly sinking deep into my overall understanding. Thank you so much Marco.

    I liked your chef analogy. As a classically trained chef that is exactly how I see dishes, an amalgam of ingredients composed in a particular way. As a hobby painter it’s neat that you articulated the concept of shape in that way. Really struck home, and got the point across.

    I remember waiting for new videos to be released. Marco Bucci made me able to do urban painting with gouache and aquarelle i.e. switching from digital to traditional. all these studies I did with photoshop - Marco Bucci explains so well that a lot of information I learned during my years of digital painting finally "clicked" and lots and lots of things became clear. Whenever I try to explain things to fellow artist I often revert to linking videos of Marco because "nobody does it better"~

    'The painter speaks a different language than the picture'!
    Yes, this, totally this - beautifully articulated Marco.
    It's interesting that when this finally starts to dawn on you, only then can you stop struggling trying to paint a tree or a rock or whatever and concentrate on the shapes and values and the piecing together thereof.
    It's kind of a relief in a way - I've not suddenly become a superb exponent of the brushly arts but I am starting to see in a different way which will hopefully lead to, er, being more gooder at it.
    I wonder if there's some sort of teaching aid or game you could make with actual physical shapes in various values that can be pieced together to form images.

    Thank you, Marco! I learnt so much from you and Krenz Cushart. Your two have a lot of similar theories on composition and paintings.
    For the good shapes and CSI theories, I think the point is to reduce the amount of sides the overall shape have. The less sides a shape have, the more abstract and artistic it can be.
    Norman Rockwell and Alphonse Mucha are gods of composition and so good at creating clear shapes with realistic objects.

    Thank you! I'm an aspiring comic artist who's trying to learn to paint digitally, but I was never very good at traditional painting media in the first place. This was extremely helpful.

    I'm still learning English and terrible at listening but the visual explanations on your video are easy to understand even for a beginner of English like me.
    That's very helpful because there are a lot of videos of just "painting tutorials" in my first language but I can hardly find this kind of video.
