This Moteatea was written by Rangi Harrison in 1987 that worked for the local electricity company: Mighty River Power a government company at the time. Mighty River power owned most of the Power Station Sites at the Waikato End of the river including the one in Huntly which thanks to the NZ Government has been sold off. As part of his job Rangi had to visit every site and maintain the different catchments throughout the river, there were things he saw that were spiritual and magnificent which is what lead him to right this waiata. It was never done just for kapa haka. Moteatea is a specific way of remembering specific events, genealogies and geographical landmarks. This Moteatea is all of those things, you have land marks, tupuna and stories that most local know of. This is also one of our tribal anthems.
