    When assessing virtues like love and compassion, it is always striking how the Christian conception of these ideas is far more profound, fortifying and moving than the way the secular world construes these ideas. The Christian view of love and compassion is rooted in self-sacrifice, the most prominent example being Christ's death on the cross as the embodiment of such self-sacrifice. Nothing in the secular world's version of love and compassion resonates as strongly or is as impactful as the Christian version of love and compassion. Thank you, Mthr. Natalia, for giving such a splendid commentary on this point.

      Yes, God's permissive will allows the human freedom to make choices that will cause others and ourselves harm and pain. I teach my catechumens that one of the consequences of freedom is that if I choose to hurt you, you *will* get hurt. This is right at the beginning of Genesis: "You are free to eat..." etc. It's the defining thing God first says to humankind, and it's breathtaking the power for good or evil it allows. So for us to be free, we need to be free to choose "un-love" (sin) for both God and man. This means that everything else that comes from God in revelation has to make some kind of sense of the wildly dangerous freedom God made part of human nature. What is God's plan for when humans choose "un-love"? We need to watch all of scripture for the answer to the question of, "How does God rescue us from the consequences of our acts of un-love?" Watch for this in all of scripture and see the ultimate program outlined in the sacraments of the church, especially in John 20:22ff.

I found this episode by Gods grace and mercy, thank you Mother Natalia for sharing here, iIt is hard to hear but reminding me that through our suffering there is healing for my daughter and through my true compassion in truth and love with Jesus our Lord and Mary His mother, i am on the rigth path, i so needed to hear your words.

    I'd really like a video of mother Natalia expanding on what it would be like to suffer with someone else instead of cheering them up.
    I'm guilty of that, and I also know that many times I do this because I don't want my mood to be affected by someone's pain or I don't know how to handle that pain so I want to make it stop.
    But what would it be like to show compassion? Sitting with them for however long they need? Offering an honest helping hand in dealing with the situation? Crying with them? All of the above and more?

    I never understood people blaming morning grumpiness on coffee. We are either annoyed, miserable or sad in the morning (angry too…)…but it never gives one a right to be a grump to others. Period. Dennis Prager always said being rude to others (bcuz of one’s own mood) is like forcing B.O. on them. I am more annoyed by people these days than ever before…but I never “share” it with others. I eat it & grit my teeth. Always have, so I hate people blaming their rotten mood on a drink.

    Hi, what do you mean by self love? I'm asking because one of my biggest recurring sins is self hatred and I try to work counter to it by remembering that God loves me and gave me my life as a gift and Idk I don't want to give God something that I don't love, and God loves Himself and us and we're supposed to imitate Him... and I also am recovering from a lot of mental illness, and it seems from everything my doctors are teaching me like self esteem is an important part of mental health and I know God created me to be healthy, and have healthy thoughts, and I believe that healthy human beings glorify God... I think the devil tries to convince me that God wants me broken. Self love kind of makes sense, like isn't it loving to God to love what He chose to give you? And give God what you love? I think it is the language that is confusing me. I don't think God wants me to stop trying to love myself but I think clarifying the language would really help me clarify how exactly God wants me to idk think I guess. It's so hard. Thanks, these videos are incredibly beautiful.

      As someone who suffers (suffered?) from self-hatred, if I may impart a few tidbits of advice that helped me:
      -To love is to will the good of the other.
      -Humility is not achieved by thinking less of oneself, but by thinking of oneself less.
      -(from C.S. Lewis) it's ok to seek approval from God like a dog or horse seeks approval from its master, or a child seeking praise from a parent. True humility is seldom modest.

  • @emilyy4346
    @emilyy4346 5 месяцев назад +1

    What does she mean by annihilate self love?

    • @Lucsleon
      @Lucsleon 5 месяцев назад +1

      A good image that perhaps clarifies this issue is the love of a mother for her son or daughter. The mother, seeing her child suffering, prefers to take the pain upon herself rather than see the child’s suffer. Another image, perhaps rarer in today's world, is that of the husband who dies for his wife. In both the first and second examples, the death that the lover desires for himself in exchange for the death of the beloved is a source of life, not a cause of suffering. The lover rejoices in the consciousness of the beloved's immaculateness, and therefore, in this case, for the lover, death is like milk and honey.
      To annihilate self-love is to take upon oneself the death of one's neighbor - if we understand that suffering is a type of death -; and it is by forgetting “oneself”, merging one’s being with the being of one’s neighbor, through the act of love - for isn’t this the reason for love, to unite (in the Being of God)? -, that the milk and honey will be tasted. Remember that whenever the lover takes upon himself the suffering of the beloved, he is drinking from the fountain of Paradise - and this is no exaggeration: it is the true Source of Life, I reiterate.
      Mortifying oneself in love for God is like seeking the Spring of Life, the only one that can quench human thirst.

      Well no one would say that you’re not allowed to enjoy ice cream. Enjoying ice cream is only destructive when you over indulge in it. How are you defining “loving yourself”? Because there is a difference between self-indulgence and love and this is worth reflecting on. If you love yourself before loving Christ first then is Christ truly the center of your life or is he there in your life for your convenience? I think when Mthr. Natalia says to eliminate “self-love”, she’s not saying that you should stop taking proper care of yourself but rather to keep your intentions pure and to not be caught up in self-indulgence.
