I’ve only been out a few times over the years but have given up on river fishing 90% due to these people. It disgusts me the way people are out there,I’m not saying all but definitely in my opinion 85% . Fishing to me is/has/was always about getting out relaxing in nature, but in my experience’s it was mainly stressful and rarely a positive experience,it’s sad because I truly enjoy it. I’d love to get back into it but unless I can’t figure out how to do so at the least over populated areas/times I will sadly not be returning 😢 . If anyone could please tell me of spots for people with mobility issues that can actually use them let me know, the couple spots I’ve been told about are always in use from those who don’t need them & won’t move for those of us that do . Thx for your videos hopefully people will learn from them.❤

Unfortunately, the more easily accessible a spot is, the more crowded it gets. The crossing and Peach rd are both easy access, but you have to get there early to get a spot, like 5 AM early.

so whats going to happen in 2024 fall season? anything different? more people would be my guess. Better enforcement? I believe the problem is a monster far bigger than what a small number of enforcement officers can clean up from top to bottom big issues and general problems. So no change there other than surprise closures etc. Thankfully honest people post good info to help those that want to learn, thanks for that, and it can put a shine on the vedder to attract people that may otherwise go to smaller streams

There are long term trends. It used to be that any kind of snagging was not tolerated on the Vedder by other anglers. Lately I find that there are some places where everybody is doing it and there is no will to stop it. Check out Ebi Fisher's channel and his video. I stopped by that spot later in the season and the same thing was happening. ruclips.net/user/shortspqbCnOLOYI0?si=mrfdd_w3K7FeX04Q

    Greate idea on educating anglers👍
I am myself fairly new salmon angler and somewhat more detail oriented. And went throw the regulations a few time and stil have alot of questions...
Last november, when i just began my salmon fishing i observerved this technique and set up which i proudly shared with a buddy at work and was gonna use the next time... He said it was flossing and illigal😅😢.
The second time i hear the word is in your video...
Also i find many people are quite ignorant about many other things...like when you suppose to have salt or fresh water license and concept of watershead boundaries. Mostly because they are ocasinall anglers and not much into it...
Here in BC or may be whole Canada there is alot of grey area when it comes to rules and regulations, whether its fishing or driving and probably in many other areas.
I saw one a mistake on government web update about catch limit, it was so cumbersome worded that it actually ment opposite of what they ment😅😢. I had to cross check with another sources..

Agree with you comments 100% and thank you for using your voice to educate others. The concept of an undercover sting is a very workable solution, if DFO can commit the resources. This tactic was applied very successfully during the pink run in 2017 on the Seymour estuary where at least 4 undercover officers were fishing amongst the crowd for at least an hour before the uninformed officers arrived. I saw many tickets and at least 4 set of fishing gear taken away. Word got around about the sting and fishing ethics improved dramatically during the following couple of weeks. It does work, if there is sufficient funding and commitment.

Love your opinions, however I think what they did in this case was appropriate. While closing the area doesn’t stop the overall problem the point of this area being closed is because that is where the bulk of the sockeye are holding before going up to the cultus, which is the specific run they are protected. The problem of snagging is a separate issue that also needs to be addressed as you mentioned.
The analogy of the speeders does not relate to this closure as it is only closed for a short time in a small small area to protect a specific run.

I'm perfectly ok with people fishing for a variety of reasons. There is a wide range. Some people tie flies and then fish them with the tip of the hook clipped off. The sight of a trout taking their fly is all they want. On the other end of the spectrum we have people gill netting in the Fraser and selling the fish. Both are ok, as long as conservation goals can still be met. What really bothers me is people fishing with zero regard for the incidental harm that their actions inflict on the fish. We have rules, let's ensure that everyone plays by them.

I have no evidence, but I would say this has more to do with the Somas First Nation fish monitoring efforts in that spot. I would guess it was the people running that station who observed the non-compliance and complained about it. The Somas First Nation is exploring ways for a selective harvest on the Vedder. I respect Aboriginal rights, but to put it in some perspective: the fishing community has invested millions of dollars (directly and through license fees) on habitat restoration on the Vedder. At the same time decades of reckless gill netting on the Fraser has caused many of those stocks to collapse. The talks about "reasserting stewardship" sound pretty hollow to me.

The problem with social pressure is sadly the threat of violence in retaliation. We saw the incident between the jet boater and shore angler last year.
Sometimes good things come of it though. Down here in Washington at a popular spot for Chum I confronted someone for keeping a snagged Chum (A super dark fish too. Honestly their karma was probably having to consume the thing) only to be yelled at in return. The younger guy in the group approached me holding the stick they used to bonk the fish, I assumed he was coming over to threaten me. Fortunately, he happened to be an old high school classmate I didn't recognize. He quietly apologized for his parents behavior, and talked to me to learn about the regulations. This just pushed the problem elsewhere and made it more difficult to bring my 6 year old to the river fishing with me (easy access and a park near by). Gotta agree and disagree with you. Where I disagree is that snagging has evolved. These guys are so good at it now it’s quite tough to tell and enforce who’s doing it. Leaders are just long enough to snag but short enough to deny. Floats are set deep enough to snag but short enough to claim there’s a deep spot in the run. Second thing is sockeye do bite and can be quite aggressive in the river. Plus they’ll bite a lot of the same gear as chinook.
Where I agree is the statement says observed non-compliance. This means they were able to tell who’s snagging and instead of enforcing the rules they basically just said go do it somewhere else.

It seems painfully obvious to me when someone is snagging. Many people floss and pretend they're not, but I don't see that as the main problem as flossing is not prohibited in the regulations. Yes, many say that flossing is in fact snagging, but I don't see it that way. All fishing ethics are somewhat artificial in nature, I don't yell at my friends for buying fish caught in commercial nets. The way I see it everyone needs to play by the rules we have and there needs to be a mechanism to change the rules as ethics and attitudes evolve. In the final analysis we have to put conservation first and non selective fishing practices are a part of the problem.

I’m not talking about the guys who rip back multiple times in their retrieve. They’re obvious. I’m talking about the guys who can see the fish and as they go through them they claim they saw their float bounce or felt a hit and set the hook even though they didn’t get a bite. There’s more of those guys now and it’s going to be tough to enforce.

We need more radical solutions. For the highly fished locations like C/V river, there should be maximal days of fishing for each angler per year (comes with angling licence purchase) plus a maximal number of fish to be taken per year.
There is technology how to secure all of this. If somebody wants to fish more than standard days, need to pay more or fish elsewhere.

    Hey Petr,
Great video; it is presented in a great way.
I 100% agree with you. I don’t like how DFO handled this situation, it hasn’t solved a single issue. I would of rather liked to see some undercover work done with heavy fines or even arrests. On top of all that, I’m starting to lose respect for the DFO, due to the way they handled this situation, clearly shows, that the DFO either doesn’t care enough to protect our stocks or are purposely being lazy, especially, when these snaggers have their own Facebook group, where they post the proof of them snagging and mistreating fish, yet the DFO closes there eyes to this.
However, I did really appreciate FishingWithRod, posting several videos clips of a known snagger on his page yesterday and putting the snagger on blast; I also hope to see Fred remove that snagger from future steelhead derbies (as this snagger was apart of the derby last year and he did get a steelhead, which was most likely snagged).
I really hope, that the DFO steps up their game for the upcoming fall salmon season, and hopefully puts a meaningful dent on the snaggers.
Hope you have an amazing fall salmon season as well, hopefully we’ll see each other on the river!

i agree it is on us, the anglers to ensure things get better. too many anglers stay quiet in the face of someone fishing illegally. if we all make sure to let the person know they are breaking the law, even if they don't stop 'fishing' that way, they are probably going to leave for the day because everyone around them has told them they're breaking the law and they're gonna feel awkward. no need to get macho about it. i would also report any instances to the DFO.

Agreed for the most part. The DFO has chosen to cut field staff rather than administrative positions. Also they operate helicopters at $2000 per hour and spotter planes at something like $10 000 per hour instead of putting boots on the ground. I understand that they are working in the framework of an Ottawa buroucracy, but some of these things don't make sense to me. Certainly more reported infractions give them the paper trail to justify more enforcement and we need to keep that up.

The divide I see is largely along the lines of immigration status. Recent immigrants make up a fairly large part of the problem. I'm an immigrant my self, but I'm proud to call myself a Canadian and glad that the country accepted me. In return I accept that things are done a certain way here. In my home country the poacher is seen as a somewhat heroic figure (kind of like Robin Hood) , taking deer from the rich land owner to feed his family. In North America where the fish belong to us all, it's a different perspective and the poacher is the selfish one that killed Bambi's mother.

I think there should be mandatory test when obtaining a fishing license to start (fishing etiquette, fishing handling techniques, fish identifications, reading regulations). Just like when you go hunt, you don't just get a license and go out and hunt. Of course this isn't going to deter the people that don't follow the rules but it's a start. Also we need more reinforcements that's undercover to hand out fines.

Good vid Petr. The problem started in the Ninetys with the new Sockeye sportfishery, it spawned a whole new wave of poor fishing ethics and habits fishing on the Fraser and continue to all other rivers. This continued with Fraser R. chinook fishery. And the sportfishing world lost a great bar fishing past time, all due to flossing .Newbies need to relies this. Or we will be losing more privileges. It easier for DFO to close areas than legislate new laws and regulations. Maybe the Sporting Good Industry that benefits from all the fisheries (salmon, steelhead and trout) need to take greater interest in providing workshops at sportshows , in house , or on the river at problem fishing sites. I am 69 years old and fished Chilliwack R since I was 5 years old and i've pretty much stopped fishing in salmon season because of all you mention.

Regulations are a difficult problem, I've ran into some very rude people at vedder last year cutting my line and threatening violence, claiming I'm using illegal hooks when I'm very carefully using single barbless. There should be a license suspension that comes with repeated offenses, and people really should be more aware of the rules knowing they are there to keep the fish coming for generations.

In my home country poaching is seen in an entirely different way than here. There are many cultures that have an entirely different approach to the treatment of fish and animals and the exploitation of nature.
