I believe this is a method some people use to commit information to long term memory. While he isn't writing in real life he is "actually writing" on a piece of paper in his head to reference later. I've seen mathematicians do it before in a few videos. I think it is similar to a memory palace.
My friend does this to translate between languages when he can't think of a word, he "writes" it on his hand and that helps him figure it out.

@randomguy8196 Yeah I know
@randomguy8196 We even have a replacement in the form of code-based cryptography which is like 100 years old and very well tested. Algorithm that works on that math is for example McEliece. Only problem is that key sizes are kinda big but we still have more options like lattice based cryptography (NewHope, ...) which even Google tested in their browser for developers.
AES is still safe. Weakened, but relatively safe, you just need to increase key length. With quantum computer, 256 bit key length should be enough, for quantum computers would take same time to decrypt it as it would take classical computers to decrypt 128 bit key. Which is eons.
(I have corrected my statement, Rijndael does not have 512 bit key length).
