Inside Goma prison days after inmates burned alive

Horrifying details of atrocities are continuing to emerge from the Democratic Republic of the Congo 12 days after the Rwandan-backed armed group, M23, seized the eastern city of Goma. Nearly 3,000 people have been killed in the fighting - around 2,000 bodies are still to be buried.

As rebels entered the city, Goma’s Munzenze prison became a centre of the violence. It was set on fire, prisoners were burnt alive - and thousands escaped. The UN says female prisoners were raped by male prisoners.

Terrible and terrifying indeed 😭 despite the approach of the gun men the guards should have at least spend some time opening the doors so people escape and those prison officials new that M23 could come at anytime so why didn't they take those prisoners to another place in time. Much sympathy to fellow brothers and sisters from Mzansi

It's a pity actually but why did they imprison babies In the first place,that was a very sad situation, probably the rooms in which they were sleeping were locked and they could not come out and perished there especially women and children.

Some prisons in Africa allow women prisoners to keep their babies. But the babies can go out any time they want since they are free. This was a sudden and uncertain situation
