I played percussion for st austell in 2005 when we were drawn 1st at the national finals to play this piece. I’m listening to it again 19 years later and I can still remember the absolute terror of walking out onto the stage at the Albert hall at 15. This video brings back so many memories and emotions

Well played and a great rendition, but after seeing the composers chat about the piece I think this piece isn't worthy of a class act like Cory.Band, or any other top class band.. Maybe they HAD to play it as a test piece or something, but Meistersingers it ain't. I agree wholeheartedly that new music MUST be approached and commissioned with vigour, but this was a 2nd grade test piece in the making. I'm sure others who have had to suffer this type of "1st Class" new music must cringe at the thought of listening to it 20 times in one day at a finals. I bet Eric Ball must be rotating like a BBQ spit in his grave.

      Hi Garry,
Eden is rightly regarded as one of the most challenging, yet rewarding tests of recent times. It was the set test at the 2005 National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall and was enjoyed by audience and competitors alike.
It is only played by the very best ensembles and only played well by the very best on their best days.
For further listening, we recommend John Pickard's Gaia Symphony:

I have to say Garry, I sat through most performances in 2005, don't remember cringing, don't remember anybody else cringing come to that - second rate it ain't and you're certainly right, it ain't the Meistersingers either, thankfully we left it behind in the 60's!!!

@@thecoryband1884hi! I remember playing this piece as principal percussionist with St Austell band in 2005. I was 15 at the time and I’m 33 now and I can still remember being drawn 1st on the day. Gosh I will remember it forever it was so terrifying and so amazing I loved every second it. We recruited a fantastic percussionist from Switzerland called Domie Brugher to help us along. My father welded an anvil to a stand for us to use in this piece and I fondly remember turning the concert bass drum on its side so we could lay chains on it. This piece was revolutionary and completely chaotic for its time. Nobody had heard a brass band play a piece like this. It sounded like something an orchestra should play to a 14 minute film about something mad and chaotic.its amazing to hear it being played by Cory and to hear it being played how it should be….i mean, we have it our best back in 2005 and that’s all we could do. We came second to last at the end of the day. Which to us at the time immense!!😂😊
