Your method worked beautifully! I decided to push the limits and do a very short "mild" winter in the fridge, only keeping the seeds in the fridge for 1 week. I pulled them out and stuck them next to a vent, and within 1 week nearly ALL of my lavender seeds had germinated! I assumed I would only get 50% germination at best, so I started too many seeds (probably close to 100) but I picked the best 25 and put them in jiffy peat pellets. I'll transplant them to my garden in about a month and get my lavender hedge going. Thank you so much for making such an excellent video!

Yours is a great method. No problems, I stratified as you described and had the first sprouts within 2 days of putting the plate under light. I'm only 4 days into it now, and have 36 tiny but sturdy-looking plants potted up already. Thanks for sharing!
Just following up, 2 weeks after my initial post. I got very nearly 100% germination, and each of the germinated seeds transplanted to tray cells in starting mix, and are doing very well. Most already have their first true leaves already, even though the seedlings are still very small. I also want to say "thanks" for putting me on to the tool you use--have had one for years, but never thought to use it for working with seedlings.

It looks like a 'urethral sound' which is a medical device for probing and dilating passages in the body ... such as the urethra. They are also used for sexual gratification/stimulation in men. They are readily available online through the usual big box suppliers. Not all styles have the wide, flat end ... handy in keeping the sound from being inserted too far into the urethra. They usually come in sets of different gauges and are tapered on one end. Now we have yet another use for them.

I propagate my lavenders from cuttings. Works every time. I'm going to try growing them from seeds next, just for the experience. I love how you're never afraid to take the road less travelled and experiment in your garden.

I'm thrilled I found your channel. Right now I'm growing about 15+ different veggies/herbs/fruits at the same time with some different varieties of flowers and growing/propagating succulents. I always get great results when I start my seedlings in coconut coir soil. Most of my current veggies started off this way. I would say you should try it out next time you're starting some new seeds.
I'm pretty sad though because I had started some cucumbers from seeds and they were finally growing into some nice sized cucumbers when iguanas came and chomped on all the cucumber plants, not one saved. Here in Florida it's been taken over by iguanas. I need to find a way to keep them away.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I have tried to germinate lavender but I always failed but hopefully I will have a lot of lavender this summer. I used two packs of seeds (approx 120seeds) I had 107 germinated, healthy lavender seeds. I transferred them and can’t wait to plant them in April! Thank you so much again🙏🏻

you are welcome. I tried and failed many years until I stumbled upon this secret. Even with this process they are still slow, but way better. Buy new seed and try this.
P. C. It worked for me in 7 days for germination the ones i did freeze. The ones i didnt freeze i planted directly in the potting soil in a little pot and it is still not getting germinated
I find them almost impossible to root and I have green thumb..so to speak, lol..way too time consuming to wait 2 months & fail. Easier buy small ones at Lowe’s or HDepot, even WalMart sells small 4” size..
I'm not sure how long ago you put this video up but, I found your method of sprouting lavender interesting. I followed your advise with a small packet of seeds I picked up at the end of the season sale. I had so much success with the seeds I'm excited to grow more.

I tried your method and got almost full germination on the whole batch! Thanks so much for your great advice! I got several good sized seedlings, then through the summer (after putting them in beds outside and basically ignoring them) I still have about 60% of them that stayed up and grew strong in spite of my neglect!
Melissa Fields how long did they take to sprout after coming out of the fridge? Mine have been out for a week and I got one sprout almost immediately, which I’ve planted, and no more yet
Laura Chapman Gaasemyr they all sprouted their baby root shoot within about the same amount of time... within 4-5 days as I recall. There were a few stragglers that took a bit longer but didn’t do well after planting on soil. The energetic starters seemed like they did the best overall.

This was a great video. I watched it again as a refresher. Now that I am a little further ahead in my gardening experience I offer two more options that I have used. You can put the starts in individual cups as you demonstrated. I have also put the seed start in a soil block and let continue growing and then transplanted. Soil blocking takes less space and the block is packed with nutrients (manure). Lastly you can take the seed start ant put it in an AeroGarden. I have even rooted cuttings in an AeroGarden. All of these are successful methods.. The one you choose will depend on how much life time you have. Lavender grown in an Aero Garden is really robust and healthy and grows fast. Well I've tried more than a few times to grow lavender, I just thought I wasn't doing something right, n now I know, .. I wasn't! Lol

Glad I watched this before potting up my seeds, which have been in the refrigerator in a baggie with a moist towel for 34 days.
I used this method and it works! Placed the seeds in the fridge for a month, then sowed it in the potting mix (70% coco peat 30% vermi compost). Then in 5 days, some of it has been germinated. I live in tropical weather, and i failed germinating the lavender in my previous attempt. Thanks so much the information!

@@adelaivascu9129 no i didn’t, apparently the water didn’t dry out in the fridge for almost a week. However, after germinating, you need to place in cool temperature (i.e. in air con room). Otherwise the plant wont survive if it is too hot
Oh my, I wish I had known this years ago. I too love lavender but have resisted buying the started plants. Several times in the past few years I've bought a packet of seeds, planted them, waited...not one sprout ever. I can't wait to try this. Too late this year (July 28) but next spring... Thank you!

Thanks for the great video! I have been attempting to grow lavender while quarantining and just noticed yesterday that after several weeks...I have a couple teeny seedlings coming up. As you noted....the germination rate is abysmal so I'm really looking forward to trying your method. I just ordered more munstead variety and hopefully I can contain my excitement for 30 to 40 days before I give it a try. Thanks again...I would have never thought of this.
Some people in the comments did only 7 days in the fridge. Maybe you can try a batch like that to see how well it works for you

Great tutorial on lavender. I was hoping to find out how to save and use the seeds from existing plants, however. Will have to do more research on that.

I know this is an old video but I wanted you to know that your process worked like a charm. I'm only at the point where I've taken my 2 baggies from the fridge (one is blue lavender, and one is pick lavender) and placed them in a warm, sunny window for germination. I'm at about day 6 in front of the window, and about 50% of the pink Lavender has already germinated. I see a few of the blue Lavender (Munstead) has germinated, but it's still pretty far behind the pink. I have many days to go yet, but I'm very encouraged! Thanks for the video!
Nice to hear that. Sometimes you also get bad batches of seeds, so if one of them germinates less, that could be it

Best video I found on lavender thanks a lot I'm struggling growing it now I know what I got to do try twice nothing I'm going to do that stratified and then with your plate message thanks buddy 😁😁😁😁😁
I later found out that 2 weeks in the refrigerator is usually enough, and remember that after taking the plate in the bag from the fridge, leave it at room temperature for at least a week near bright light, but out of direct sun, because you don’t want the seedling cooking or drying up inside the plastic.
This worked! Nearly 100% germination rate. Thank you.

Thank you! Many of the other methods for germinating lavender seeds don't mention taking them out of the refrigerator after the 30-40 days. I was about ready to thrown the seeds out since there wasn't any growth. But now I've taken them out of the fridge and put them in a sunny spot. Here's hoping they sprout!
@@SS-lr6kz just don’t leave then in direct sunlight while they are still in bag as that can cook them. As soon as they show signs of sprouting, transfer then to soil.

This video is so helpful, i did the same but like in a cup full of soil, let it sit in the fridge for 30 days just took it out a week ago and i have lavender sprouts !
I live in Pittsburgh PA and I have had excellent germination with the "winter sowing" method with-in outdoor milk jugs. Leave the jugs out in the elements - no cap. I left mine between my own and neighbors house. I brought indoors once I saw two or three sprouted seedlings, and placed under a grow light. And every seed on surface of that soil soon after germinated and rooted deep. I just thinned them out since I don't need 150 seedlings to transplant and raise.

FYI I've been working on growing lavender for a while now. I began with seed cells to no avale. I then took my next set and done the paper towel method BUT I used a peroxide and water solution! All but one are sprouting and it's only been days!

How long from planting in dirt before they were ready to transplant outside? Also, how long did you leave them in the refrigerator? I've read a few comments where people only left them for a week and still got germinating seeds

Thank you for sharing this Siloe! So now I know that I can try again with my remaining seeds which I had given up on. Now I need to know how to keep it alive ! I bought couple plants on discount and put them in a very high raised bed and whiskey barrel pot. They survived and flourished all Summer but during the winter they have wilted. Is this normal ? Will they come back ? I have never successfully grown Lavender before. Thanks ! Doug
Doug, Growing lavender in Maryland can be challenging. Growing lavender in Eastern maryland is even harder because of how humid things are. Since you put them in a very raised bed, maybe they will come back (It depends on how much wilted they are)
