I agree that yes, Exton's appearance felt like somewhat of a cheap ending, since he just appeared out of nowhere to kill Richard. But making it Aumerle...eh. I guess it did make Richard's situation more lonely and subsequently more tragic, but the way they modified it to hint that Bolingbroke really wanted Aumerle to kill Richard...I'm not quite sure that's what Shakespeare meant. Seems to me when I read the original play that Shakespeare wanted to portray Bolingbroke in a positive light, and that Exton was just someone who wanted to please the new King, so he twisted Henry's words somewhat to mean Henry wants him to kill Richard.
Then again, I'm not an expert on Shakespeare, so...correct me if I'm wrong.

I didn't like Aumerle being made the murderer. It felt wrong and contrived.
