      It'll basically be like using a bike gearbox if you know what that's like (bikes have dogboxes which you can shift without the clutch if you choose to) Personally I wouldn't use a dogbox and shift without the clutch on the road as if you don't get off the throttle when you shift you'll strip the dog and once it's stripped it's only a matter of time before it's a serious issue and the gear you fucked won't stay in and it'll start dropping into neutral. When it does get to that point, if not immediately after you're gonna have to pull the gearbox.

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  2 года назад +12

      Yes and no..... The sequential gearbox itself is purely a mechanical part. You can shift the gearbox sequentially without any special ECU. Just you will need to remove your foot from the accelerator quickly and shift. For flatshifting though, you will need something to interrupt the torque on the gearbox. Either you can use our shiftbox, or you can go with a new engine ECU that will be able to handle the sequential upgrade. I put up a different video also on that one. Id avise to check it out.

      This is incorrect. Helical gears are stronger than straight cut gears.
      The benefit lies in the efficiency in which power is transmitted through them. They are much more efficient than helical, which is why they are used in motorsports.

      @@1217wade Not a problem!
      You'll find in most cases, strength/durability are a secondary concern when it comes to motorsports.
      Higher performance and less weight are top priority. As long as it's durable enough to last the race, it's good to go!

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  2 года назад +4

      @@techtard829 this is always a topic of conversation. There are many things that can determine what is better: helical or straight. with helical gears, the force on the shafts is in a different direction, therefore choice of bearings, assembly method, case strength, these things all come into play. but in design, we consider the center distance of the shafts, width of the gear, tooth profile, tooth contact ratio, positioning of the gear on the shaft, material, heat treatment process and many more things.....
      in the higher classes of motorsport, FIA generally have in their homologation papers the general life expectancy of parts, gear / dogring / shaft.... budget requirements. performance is definitely key, and weight. The yaris gearbox is not for formula 1, so although we dont want it to weigh so much, the durability factor is definitely there. main project focus will always depend upon the race application.

      Im pretty sure mechanically it will plug in. Engine is the same, rear diff is the same. I would assume its the same car with slightly different body panels, differerent engine tune and a different name. But essentially it should be the same thing.

    How does the braking effect of the gearbox work? How are you downshifting so many gears while at speed? I don't understand

    • @nickcook7408
      @nickcook7408 2 года назад

      Downshifting through very close ratios whilst heavy braking

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  2 года назад

      hard brake and shift down. i was actually dipping the clutch slightly. with a better motor tune and ECU, it could probably brake another 30% faster than in the video with the sequential.

    What is that whining sound? I’ve always heard that noise in GT cars

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  2 года назад

      from the gearbox shafts spinning and the tooth contact. it is common across most motorsport gearboxes.

    • @alexvillalobos7137

      It could be the gear ratios are very close to eachother so the car might not have a very high top speed but it gets up to speed very fast and the car always stay deep within the power band. Great for the track

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  2 года назад

      Essentially any install in our workshop for a customer car is to test the gearbox. The engine doesnt need to be tested. We could probablyuse a bit more RPM, but not necessary in this situation.

    • @nealmendham9649
      @nealmendham9649  Год назад +1

      These ratios are a little shorter than the original. Better performance in the car. We do have also longer ratios available, so it comes down to a personal choice and essentially which racing you will be doing.

    Just out of curiosity. Would it possible to use built in display to show gear selection ? Via app, or display input ? Not sure how this display is built and what OS it has.

    • @nealmendham9649

      With more development it is possible of course. Generally we make race products and so the apps and things like that are already solved though aftermarket ECUs and aftermarket dash.

    Cool idea, but I personally would hate this in a Yaris GR. For sure this makes it a much more raw experience, but it’s still a Yaris people. It’s a cheap car where almost anybody could buy it if they wanted to. It’s a small engined turbo car. To have it become super raw is just dumb to me.

      Allow me to to throw in 2 cents. I am mainly a motorcycle rider but I do own and used to own low cc bikes (Ninja 250 for example) which in some regard can be seen as hothatchbacks of the car world. In my mind Yaris like this allows people with lower skill level to extract full potential of the car. You can drive it to limit with fairly low risk of vehicle overwhelming you. This Yaris appeals to people that want capable car but still within low skill threshold, usable outside of track and with premium brand tax on top.
