Klon Toads were introduced to Australia in 1994 to control guitar overdrive pests. They proved ineffective in this role, but adapted well to the Australian environment and spread quickly. They are now found in Queensland, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Klon Toad cricket is a sport of worship in these states of Australia
Dan, you are a treasure in this world. So glad you're looking after your noggin. We love you (both) and need you to be in good health and spirits! Cheers, -G
Idea for a show: "One trip your rig" It's a challenge format show where you have to put together a rig that you can transport in one trip.. but this is more a collaboration than a competition. Most of us who gig have at some point decided that we've got to have a killer sounding rig that will get it all done and that's small enough that we can take it on a bus / train / taxi etc.. So, here's the deal: The TPS band have been booked to play a private show in London to a 300 cap audience, but your cars are in the garage after you crashed into each other in a rush to get home for a meat feast ..so the only option for you both is to get the train. You'll be able to get a taxi from the station to the venue. Doug, Paddy and Jack will meet you at the venue where there is already PA set up and a good engineer. The band have 1 hour to load in, set up and sound check before doors open. You'll be playing 3x 45min sets, which will include all the songs you played when AT came to visit, plus a handful of classic rock and modern pop tunes. Each player is restricted to the following items: One double gigbag, worn on your back. One item in the left hand One item in the right hand One additional bag worn across your front Your rig must include a minimum of the following and you must be genuinely happy with everything in the rig: Two electric guitars At least one valve amplifier A pedalboard Stage clothes There are a whole bunch of different ways to pluck this turkey.. which will you choose?!
I'm looking forward to the new show format ideas (having an audience, changing the room around, etc). However, I will say, most of us don't know what the hell we wanna see, as we don't know what we don't know. I have gained so much knowledge by watching shows where you gentlemen are just doing what you are inspired to do and digging deep into subjects that you're interested in. Not that I have a vote (thankfully), but, please don't feel compelled to to make content to please us, just please yourselves and keep posting inspired shows. Thats always my favorite content. Thank you for all of the amazing content over the years!
Hey Dan, just off your mention I scored the last ep-pre at Pedal Empire and discovered that putting it between the g3s preamp and a Kingsley page ts is tone nirvana! Eb Strat and Rift Aynsley Lister helps but I’ve never really put the pre gain in the g3 to use like this before. I love it so much. In that setup it feels a lot like a really nice fuzz face just a bit less unruly. Thanks for the constant inspiration and the awesome inventions!
Just catching up and I absolutely adore that 345... Coincidentally I just bought a 59 reissue 335 in "vintage burst" for my own 50th (only 2.5 WEEKS away) that I absolutely fell in love with, and that was quite rash enough for my finances without looking at actual vintage... Enjoy!!!
so happy to see ya all back and well! Missed you guys. That Bondi pedal is so awesome. A bucket list pedal for me every since a friend of a friend had one running through his Dr. Z amp. Just a stellar thing
Lovely to have you both back safe and sound for 2024. Wishing your head a swift recovery Dan ! Bill Nelson ( Be-Bop Deluxe and extensive solo career ) used a 345 for many, many years as his main guitar. Here's to a great year of TPS ! With continued Gratitude for all you do - John
Happy New Years gentlemen. Looking forwards to the new year and new gear. Loved the favorites show, that was fun. I can’t wait to get some time off soon to learn my Christmas present from That Pedal Shop as I add a Thorpy Veteran to my board. I have only have about an hour into it right now but I think it’s going to be a winner for me.
D&M, I’ve been holding myself to the 35 minute rule: example writing music for 35 minutes a day, every day. No matter what. Every single day. Remove expectation and focus on the doing. It has yielded fresh musical results since late October. Cheers.
Deciding this year or any point on the space time continuum is going to be great or better than the (x) before is a fantastic way to lop the bad parts of the past off at any time you choose. I don't make New Year's Resolutions' per se, but I have no problem using the Holidays as a solid point to dictate when to take out the trash and start again.
Hey Dan, I was the one who asked about your EP at the Pedal Empire night. I can fully relate to stress hindering creativity (or finishing songs) too man. I’m excited to hear it all when it’s done. I think what you’ll bring to the table with your songs will be really valuable, especially with the level of care and work you’ve poured in. PS: Would love to see some Electron Brothers (Aus) pedals on the show! You had the Nunchucks dual boost (tweedy, vintage dirt) on your board at PE. Their Brass Knuckles full power valve overdrive / pre is killer too!
one Nice Pedal: LYR Steel String Supreme: Fat Deep Jazz ( these are my settings...not kidding): 80 squid brannew, bought 2. althou I have the fat MXR Fet Driver, this Supreme is soo wellcome.
Great to have you guys back, and that Supro is calling my name, but it's just after Christmas, and I've just booked flights to Amsterdam for my wedding anniversary, so I'll probably have to let it go to someone else - new guitars are low on the priority list at the mo, but that thing is gorgeous!!
Mick, this probably wouldn't work in the Experience Day 2.0 format, but - looking at your present amps and some of the ones you're selling, I would LOVE to see a show about the evolution from Fenders to Mesa/Boogies to Two-Rocks, the whole Fender diaspora, and how that line of development has shaped your tastes and playing. (And you guys never did The Tweed Episode!)
Per/ 1:04:00 reverb convo. Im sure the rv200 is bananas as well. I settled on the ir200 (amp/cab bypassed unless the amps are in the shop) before that came out because i use it as an eq/boost/reverb/volume/audition loop. It only has a plate/hall/room and all three are awesome. Up to 10 seconds, tone control gives you a lot of options. I cant imagine what you could do with the rv200. I have 5 usable presets just for reverb on acoustic gigs, and you'ld laugh me out of the building if you knew how many i have just for reverb/eq/boost for lead gigs lol but dont sleep on the boss stuff (ya know, unless you want a spring because that remains the only thing they dont seem to be competitive at, but who knows... it is new)
Show Idea Hi Dan, Mick, and everyone at TPS! I just watched this great vcq and at the end you asked if anyone had any show ideas. I’ve had a show idea for a couple years and your VCQ has finally motivated to message you. The basic idea for the video would be talking about how to craft tones for different parts of a song in a studio setting, as well as working with a producer to help bring the track to life. I think it could be a great way to take everything you talk about on the show and give it a context that maybe isn’t talked about enough. I could see it set in a couple of different ways. Version 1: Challenge, Version2: Guest Version 1: Challenge Dan & Mick are given the challenge of going into the studio to track guitar for a friends upcoming EP release. Each of them must put together a versatile rig which may consist of 2 guitars, 2 amps and a pedalboard (number of pedals TBD) This rig should be versatile enough to capture a wide range of sounds as each player will be asked to craft a rhythm, lead, and texture parts in 3 different styles of songs. Once the rigs are put together, back in the room they will be played a track and asked to create the tones they feel would suit the track best and elevate the song. That’s the basic premise for a challenge version. Another approach would be having a “producer” describe what he’s looking for in the part and you would have to work with him to create that sound. Maybe he has samples of what he’s looking for. Version 2: Guest In this version you would have a guest, for this example I’m going to use Joey Landreth as the example guest as I feel like create different sounds is something he really excels at on his records. Joey comes in and puts together a small rig of TPS gear or brings his own board if possible. You would play Joey some music that needs guitar parts tracked on it and would discuss how he would approach crafting a sound for the different parts of the tune. It would also be a great opportunity to talk about writing parts. I hope I’ve been able to articulate what I’m thinking clearly, I think this would make for an interesting concept for some future episodes and really help contextualize a lot of the ideas you talk about on the show. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea. Thank you so taking the time to read this and for all your hard work over the years on the show, TPS has been my favourite channel since I started watched in 2018 and I look forward to all the great videos to come in 2024. Warm regards, Ryan Goodman
Missed the stream but someone asked about Reverend Guitars, my main guitar for the last 5 years has been a Reverend Ron Asheton signature V, it has 3 Naylor P90 picks and a 5 way position switch so you get straty tones from positions 2 & 4. Reverends usually have a Bass Contour knob, which rolls off bass and is great for adjusting to different amps and pedals without having to change knobs on a pedal or eq in an amp. Gristle King is a little different, it has an active pick up in it, but every Reverend I have tried have been great guitars for the money. But, and this is a big one, Reverend does not have the same name recognition as other brands and does not have the same resale, so make sure you love it before you buy one.
wishing Dan a speedy recovery, and congrats Mick on a beautiful old Gibson! Lately I've been struggling a bit to get the right overdrive. Perhaps this is an idea for a show, too? I have a BUNCH of pedals and I'm gonna try out more, but I find it very difficult to get the right one. One that sits well with my guitar and amp, feels right under the fingers. But.... we all know "it has to sit in the mix" and "it has to work in the band", but how exactly do you do this? For example: with one band, not the loudest drummer (keeping my sc20h at 5 watts), Tubescreamer sits nicely under this specific singer. But then for certain songs I miss the punch I need. I can switch to my Klon style (set for the same job), but its bite site a little bit more in the way of the singer. Then the next day I have a jam with a different drummer. Turn up the amp louder. All my pedals behave differently. And currently (treble booster, tubescreamer and klon) my pedals don't work well together either. I know you've done a lot on tone stacking, but that's only part of my question. How would you navigate having your own sounds that feel right, while sitting right in a band when the song, loudness, and all different instruments (drums, bass but especially vocals) may differ? (I mean, I can just bring 4 overdrives depending on which band Im playing with but...)
Mick you nailed the playing live in a band vs playing on a stool by yourself I can do things with the band that I can’t do without Once we all assemble it’s game on 🤘
welcome back gents. missed u. happy new year! resolution for dan: can never use the phrase “most astonishing” ever again. 😘 i say again: i love u guys. speedy recovery dan.
Funny you mention Quo … got a UA Lion for Xmas intending it to be used with Les Pauls. Fantastic device .. then I plugged my tele into it … :O … instant Quo!! OMG! Fallen in love with that pedal instantly. Most of my pedals are low/mid price and the Lion is the most I’ve ever spent on a pedal. Is there an idea to help those like myself to build a great pedal board around ONE high end pedal and a few more budget pedals?
Sad news that Tony Clarkin of Magnum has recently passed away, just few days before the release of their new album. A very under rated guitar player, song writer and inspiration for many of us. A sad loss to the music world. R.I.P
I think you briefly mentioned 70ies strats.i have a great 76 I got roughly for the price of an American Standard. It's heavy but it sounds and plays amazing live and in the studio. If you're connected, you're connected.
Congrats on the 345 Mick! I was gunna say, anything with a trapeze sounds better with a B7 but sounds like you're all over it! If you do bigsby it the lesser headstock angle will be an asset for tuning!
i went from a 10 year old C-class (which got written off by a deer) to a 10 year old Nissan X-Trail. Definitely digital to analog.... what you need is a good independent Mercedes specialist, as opposed to main MB dealers. I used to use one in Nuneaton who served me very well for a number of years. Maybe give them a look?
Unfortunately, I missed the stream, but it's good to see you guys, again. Happy new year! 🎉 Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Hammer Tone Delay. ❤
Didnt catch it live; instead, you were consumed with dinner while the fam is asleep! Great post rehearsal hang! And for my entry into the tired jokes about your recent medical woes, just tell your new king to get some more practice in before he knights anyone else, Sir Dan. ;) Glad you are ok! And glad you guys are back! -cheers!
Owner of two ES-345's here: one has a factory bigsby and one is a stop tail. I also have a 330 trapeze and I have to say that while my inclination would have been to remove the trapeze for the bigsby before I had my 330, I now really think it does something cool with the tone that the bigsby doesn't do. 345's don't need the extra tail weight (like an SG) and while I like the stop tail best, if I were you I'd leave that trapeze on the 65 for a good while before you think about changing it if at all. Also: don't kill the varitone! There's a great article online and empirically has been shown there is NOT 'tone suck' in position 1. IMO the best possible configuration of a 3X5 guitar is mono varitone. Flip the neck pickup magnet so the pickups are in phase and modify the output jack and varitone switch to be mono (remove one of the sprague multi-leg monsters) and you won't regret it. You can also build a small pedal box that will let you go stereo or mono and then you don't need to touch the guitar at all! Happy playing and welcome to the 345 club Mick
Oh look Dan is back in my computer! Having confirmed that you are a Real Boy when we met at the Brisbane event it's funny to see you back trapped there in the screen!
Per 1:14 friedman convo. I do not have friedman money, however i am in a couple more bands this last year and i have run it to some new-to-amps audio people. I picked up 2 friedman mic-no-mos (analog cab sim that sits in between the amps and the cabs/ NOT A LOAD BOX) for 80$ a piece. Holy poop. What a solid sounding solution and being analog, the feel is 👌. Im very interested in trying more of dave's stuff! Its gonna take some saving lol
Mic for the Apple Watch you have to start the exercise on an app then it gets more precise data. Well at least when I had an Apple Watch 3 that’s how it was. I had the same experience when using first got it but with different activities
If Rhett does come on I’m sure he’d like to do a blindfolded tone wood identification test. We play a regular less Paul with a maple top and another Les Paul with only mahogany. He says you can hear a difference. Therefore he should easily be able to tell us. Same with a Koa top and a maple neck. I’d like to see him show everyone how easy it is.
@Dan - any footage from Brisbane? Would love to se some clips... Btw, it's super fun to remove stitches yourself. A tweezer and a scissor is all you need.
Mick, do you use nearfield monitors when you mix, if so what monitors are you using and have you used any others that you think are particularly good? Cheers!
Hey Rob. I have some Genelec 8040 which I use sometimes… but to be honest, my room is properly treated and I don’t do enough to really understand them. So while I check things, I do most of the work in headphones. Lots of people really don’t like Genelec, but theyre kinda standard in video prod, cheers!
Mick (I know you will cuz your like me ,similar personality) Mod that ES ! ,make it like you need it .The internet is crazy ! Why and How ,did it become so uncool to Mod ,and make things better ?! Size - I just dont like mini pedals ,also I'm only a 3-4 pedal ,at a time, guy so real-estate is not an issue . If it sounds good and does what I need I do not care at all if its big . I agree with the neck replacement thing , just sell it and get what you need ,Everything else I will Mod .
Ha! Thank you! I’ve done some initial playing and there are things about it that are soooooo cool, I’m in a mood to leave it be for a minute and let time/experience dictate what happens next. There is always time for these things. Cheers!
Oh also, I know nothing about cars, but I DO know people who have fought in wars (on various sides) all over the world, and militaries across this Earth swear by the Toyota Hilux. (And you can pay a bit extra to get it bulletproofed at a chop shop, which I'm sure you Anglos refer to by a fanciful name like "ricky tat" or something.)
This pedalboard challenge idea may seem a bit of a plug for the brands you guys support, but here it is. Put the names of big name pedal companies in a sack. Dan and Mick have to choose one at random, and make a rig of 3 or 4 pedals from that brand only.
Hydrogen Cells? Phase Change energy storage? idk, but I am sad that so much of our Cobalt is being diverted away from the worthwhile and necessary production of big motor guitar amp speakers and into an unnecessary and incorrect environmental problem. 😿
Mick, ever driven a BMW Z3? They’re great. Can even be worked on by a normal person, or human mechanic is you prefer. Last analog car of bmw, at least the early ones. 96-2000~ my fiancé got one as inheritance. Great summer car
I really liked the M Estate one. That was soooo cool. But they’re insane money. I also have a rule - if you can’t get a 412 in the boot, it ain’t a car. Hahahaah!
I always thought the M version looked too much like a clown shoe haha😅They’re crazy money, the non M is pretty affordable and you can find ones with straight six engines that are pretty reliable I’ve heard. The only thing you could stick in the boot is probably a couple guitars at best but I like that

Thats awesome mate. Yeah, the Clinch EP Pre is a true revelation
Your Tele and Micks DGT are my favourite sounds on TPS
Just catching up and I absolutely adore that 345... Coincidentally I just bought a 59 reissue 335 in "vintage burst" for my own 50th (only 2.5 WEEKS away) that I absolutely fell in love with, and that was quite rash enough for my finances without looking at actual vintage... Enjoy!!!
so happy to see ya all back and well! Missed you guys. That Bondi pedal is so awesome. A bucket list pedal for me every since a friend of a friend had one running through his Dr. Z amp. Just a stellar thing
HAPPY NEW YEAR LEG ENDS,, I am so glad you're back. Get well soon Dan . PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
I come for the chats, and stay for the mental health community. Thank you.
the burst on that 345 - beautiful
Thanks for the Q&A lovely Monday night fun as always. Keep rockin’ in good health lads for 2024. 334 is chefs kiss!
Lovely to have you both back safe and sound for 2024. Wishing your head a swift recovery Dan !

Thanks for answering my question - would love to be part of that group of six watching a 'live' TPS!
Congrats on the 65 345 Mick.. looks awesome.. and can’t wait to see more of it 👍

Welcome back! Saw the wound straight away and figured Dan had a run in with a Croc!
Whoa! Dan with no hat!!!!!!! Glad you are doing ok.
All Ozzy board? Yes!
I fully thought Dan was just leaning into being a proper hard ass lad in 24'. Very glad he's all well and good!
The 345 will look amazing with the bigsby Mick. Go for it. Make sure it's a B7. Get a reverend soft touch spring
So good to have the Legg@-ends back ! Happy 2024 TPS. 🤘
Kudos on undertaking the mental health journey! You are blessed with a well-read partner :) good luck!
Ha! That's been "Empty Arms" this whole time? It's also "Chain Lightning" by Steely Dan
+1 on the Honda, most reliable car I've ever had

I know you've done a lot on tone stacking, but that's only part of my question. How would you navigate having your own sounds that feel right, while sitting right in a band when the song, loudness, and all different instruments (drums, bass but especially vocals) may differ? (I mean, I can just bring 4 overdrives depending on which band Im playing with but...)
Mick you nailed the playing live in a band vs playing on a stool by yourself
I can do things with the band that I can’t do without
Once we all assemble it’s game on 🤘
Great to have you guys back and speedy recover Dan
I look forward to a new wiring blog on the new guitar Dan.......
Mick?
@@ThatPedalShow that's him doh
welcome back gents. missed u. happy new year! resolution for dan: can never use the phrase “most astonishing” ever again. 😘
i say again: i love u guys.
speedy recovery dan.
Is there an idea to help those like myself to build a great pedal board around ONE high end pedal and a few more budget pedals?
where there is a will..... theres usually something in the way!! 🙂 Welcome back!
If I had to pick a brand, it would be Gibson. Beautiful acquisition, Mick! (Mic?) So nice to see y'all again! Happy New Year!
i went from a 10 year old C-class (which got written off by a deer) to a 10 year old Nissan X-Trail.
It’s a fair representation of what happened live
Didnt catch it live; instead, you were consumed with dinner while the fam is asleep! Great post rehearsal hang! And for my entry into the tired jokes about your recent medical woes, just tell your new king to get some more practice in before he knights anyone else, Sir Dan. ;) Glad you are ok! And glad you guys are back!
-cheers!
a "chopper" 65 tele - hell, yes please :)
After giving a proper thrashing today, I think we’ve decided no mods after all! It’s a crazy cool guitar at proper volume. Whooooo!
Wow, that 345 is incredible
Thanks David! We had the first proper volume schwang with it yesterday. I think I’ve decided I’m not changing a damn thing! Hahahahaah!
Aussie Christmas song, White Wine in the Sun - Tim Minchin
Little more on the Brelloitt TODP. I just got one.
Mick.. there's no TS on your pedal board for 2024? And by the way, my Honda Civic -- 117K miles and no repairs whatsoever (apart from a deer strike).
Oh look Dan is back in my computer! Having confirmed that you are a Real Boy when we met at the Brisbane event it's funny to see you back trapped there in the screen!
Ha! Great to meet you James, thanks for coming out, was a fun night
Laurie minson makes all Aussie made pedals here in Tamworth Australia including the dingo the goanna . Worth a look
Glad to hear you're both well! Dan, did you remove a part of your brain to control the soon to be announced G4?!?
🤣
Been a minute since an NPD Show. Would be quick and fun me thinks?
If Rhett does come on I’m sure he’d like to do a blindfolded tone wood identification test. We play a regular less Paul with a maple top and another Les Paul with only mahogany. He says you can hear a difference. Therefore he should easily be able to tell us. Same with a Koa top and a maple neck. I’d like to see him show everyone how easy it is.
Side show for new year: “That Mental Show” ( yes i have clinical Major Depression and Asperger’s ) good on yer blokes :)
for a Bigsby only consider using a B3, it works perfect on my Casino. The B7 0n my ES335 can't compare.
Dan, you should become one of those chaps who wears a bandana with a hat on top now while you are healing 😊
Hope all is well Dan
Great song that would be. Country, bluegrass style. "Dingo ate my reindeer" 😀
Mick! It’d be great if you got hold of a Ric 360 for your stereo guitar show too. Ric O’Sound - an Irish man with a silly idea.
@Dan - any footage from Brisbane? Would love to se some clips...
Btw, it's super fun to remove stitches yourself. A tweezer and a scissor is all you need.
Confession: I love that Antiques Roadshow theme song. Great melody to play between songs on stage...really confuses the audience.
Good thing tone is in the fingers, then! 🧠
Mick missed a topic in which he is equally engrossed as guitar lore… pizza dough.. if you dough, you dough..
Please please please call the philosophical podcast thing with guests "That Pedal Sit-in"!!! 😆
Has Dan had a fuzz circuit implant?
I'm Australian and played fairy tale in New York on the day
Mick, do you use nearfield monitors when you mix, if so what monitors are you using and have you used any others that you think are particularly good? Cheers!
Cheers!
Any word on when Mr Rothery might appear on t'show? Especially now that Marillion's touring schedule is on pause for about another 12-18 months?
Mick, if you’re selling the Gretsch 5422TG count me in. I do live in Florida but we can work something out 🤙
“The suspect is hatless, repeat hatless” (classic Simpsons)
I'm jealous - I really need to get my brain removed. Glad it all went well Dan! :)
Can’t find the link to save myself
Didn’t Dan just buy that SG like 2 days ago? Sad to see it go, but happy to see it’s going to be replaced by an older one… I think. :)
That trapeze tailpiece changes tone dramaticaly. I would leave it there.
Yah, we had a really good shwang it today. I’m not changing a Damn thing. Hahaahah! It’s astounding!
This pedalboard challenge idea may seem a bit of a plug for the brands you guys support, but here it is. Put the names of big name pedal companies in a sack. Dan and Mick have to choose one at random, and make a rig of 3 or 4 pedals from that brand only.
Love this!
Hydrogen Cells?
Phase Change energy storage?
idk, but I am sad that so much of our Cobalt is being diverted away from the worthwhile and necessary production of big motor guitar amp speakers and into an unnecessary and incorrect environmental problem. 😿
is that some new Two Rock amp making an appearance or… ? :-)
Anybody know what ‘red’ is? Year, model, etc?
How To Make Gravy by Paul Kelly is the only real Australian Christmas song these days.
The only thing you could stick in the boot is probably a couple guitars at best but I like that
Good luck insuring a Land Rover at the moment. Check the cost of it before you start looking.
