The tears were real, she was going through a pretty nasty divorce at the time. Although she has stated that her husband wasn’t cheating, she did say that there are a million break up songs out there, but she had never heard one from “the other woman’s” perspective. Either way, she has an amazing voice! Check out “Something More”. Also, they were the band that was about to take the stage on the terrible Indiana State Fair stage collapse of 2011 where a few people lost their lives.

Also, this song was written in a way to allow the "listener to determine" who the "other" woman was. The "first" woman was never identified throughout the song. While most cheaters will "always" be a cheater she could have been fighting save her relationship as maybe she felt she was the reason he was feeling distant from her. This song leaves a lot to the imagination of the listener!

@@baknopp0517 I don't agree with that at all. One of the first things she says is "it's just another call from home, you'll get it and be gone". Makes it pretty obvious she's the other woman.

The tears were real. She was going through a divorce. The guitarist wanted to stop filming her, he couldn’t stand to see her in so much pain. They decided to continue. She wasn’t cheating in real life. She had heard Reba McEntire’s song Whoever’s In New England that deals with a wife being cheated on. Jennifer Nettles decided to write a song from the other side.

The singer was in the middle of a divorce when this was recorded (that's why those tears seem so real... they are).
She is singing from the perspective of the other woman even though she, in her personal situation, was not the other woman.
It's really easy to not feel any sympathy for the other woman but I do feel like this song does a good job in capturing the perspective, even if you don't agree with the choices.
You don't necessarily have to like the song to appreciate how well it captures the emotional turmoil of a woman who's gotten herself into that position.

It really is an interesting perspective. Even if you make a decision with the understanding of the consequences, it can be difficult to anticipate or control your emotions. People make mistakes. They can hurt both others and themselves. What really matters is a person's ability to learn from those mistakes. Their ability to grow and see how their actions will not only effect themselves but others. And how the actions of others may or may not change just because you have.

@@bfsgman you know in real life she was going through a divorce because her husband cheated on her and left for that woman. Reba had just written a song about being cheated on. She answered with this song from the “other woman’s” perspective. Had never been done before. I think her tears were real but for her own broken heart. I was only reacting to this video. I didn’t come close to saying it was all the man’s fault! I said “as well” meaning they’re both culpable. It takes two. And we don’t get the whole story in the song. We have no idea what was said or told to her. They’re relationship could have started without her knowing he was married? But got to deep. So she’s definitely made bad decisions too, like him. I just think she made this particular song from this perspective to show the heartbreak caused all around by a situation like this. Just because someone might have made bad choices doesn’t negate them from their feelings. Anyway I like how in the end she grew stronger within herself and left the situation!

I've watched other reactors miss the twist in the meaning of the chorus. Also, the reason for Jennifer's emotion may not be commonly known. Granted, using her difficulty as it was recorded is a choice - but the backstory is that she was affected by divorce in her personal life and although the song is from the perspective of the other woman, the other woman was not Jennifer.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Few months late but I really love this song - and fwiw, I don't think it's meant to make people sympathize. Just like any story with a character who makes mistakes, enjoying the song isn't agreeing with those! It's just a story about a person, flawed and emotional, telling us how they feel. Though one of the great things in music, and in stories, is we get to read in it what our experiences tell us to. Neither interpretation is wrong, but I do think we lose a bit of the magic of some stories if we get too tied up in everything having a message or goal behind it.

The song should be painful and uncomfortable. She has made a bad decision (with some help from the lying sociopath that is leading her on and telling her that he's going to leave his significant other), she is dealing with the consequences of that decision. I can empathize, but I do not sympathize. There's a difference. I can understand her pain and her performance is strong enough to make me feel some of that pain, but I do not feel sorry for her or give her a pass for her role in the situation just because I can understand how painful of a position she is in. She did put herself in that position and she's laying in the bed she made, at least until the final verse when she finally does the right thing (and even that is for the wrong reason).
Also, some recommended songs from Sugarland: Stuck Like Glue, Down in Mississippi (and up to no good), and Just Might (make me believe).

"I don't have to live this way" from "we". Good job noticing, Keith. Maybe one of the other comments will agree with me on this, but I think there's another verse that says she gets up off her knees, (or did I just miss it?) and as Keith said, she grows some strength to leave (and yes, tells him to stay with his wife).
A "good"one for the cheating wife is Garth's "Mama's in the Graveyard, Papa's in the Pen". Anything else by Sugarland is excellent.

That’s called “Papa Loved Mama” but Garth is super particular about his music so it will likely be hard to find. Also not a good one for the wife…she’s in the graveyard. It’s more of a ol’ red kinda man’s revenge/redemption after being cheated on.
Guys if you didn’t like this one don’t ever get sucked into “White Liar” by Miranda Lambert. They do a very good job of making a good song and video with a bad message.

I worked for a company and there was this guy who was married to Wife 1 and while Wife 1 was pregnant, he met and began dating the woman who would become Wife 2. Well, as soon as Wife 2 was pregnant, he met and began dating the woman that would become Wife 3. Guess what happened when Wife 3 turned up pregnant? Yep. He met another woman while Wife 3 was pregnant and I don't know what happened after that. I left the company. But mother of all that is good and holy, these women were so shocked when they found out he had cheated on them and all I could think is how can you justify being surprised when he's proven he's a freaking chronic cheater?!?!?
The song really is amazing, and her voice is outstanding. I like the simplicity of the video itself; just her singing, the guy playing guitar. Nothing to flashy.
I suggest "Coward Of The County" And "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.
"It's Your Call" and "Whoever's In New England" by Reba are relationship songs that are more from the wife's POV. And "Does He Love You" and here I have to suggest both the original video she did with Linda Davis and her most recent remake with Dolly. Both are so good. The original plays out like a mini-movie but the one with Dolly is sat more like a conversation between the two women. The one with her and Kelly is great but I think the original video has more emotion.

I think songs like these are important despite or maybe because this is a decision made to often. I'm adding that I do not feel sorry for her and the choices she made. I saw someone request Reba's Whoevers in New England as the wife's side, thankfully I'm not that kind of wife, but a great song. Y'all are absolutely right. The message of the song without knowing the story behind the song, is not right! It is absolutely unacceptable! If he cheats with you he will cheat on you! I was in a similar situation, but I didn't know he was married until later. Once I found out that was, that was the end of it, but my feelings were still there. As you will learn she was going through a bad divorce with her husband and she wrote this song, or the song was written from the perspective of the other woman. The tears that she expressed were real. Jennifer nettles is her name and she is a powerful singer! Thank you guys for reacting the way men should react. You guys reacted to Sugarland’s “Down In Mississippi” a couple months ago, and this is quite a deviation from that one. It was a live concert, amped up, great crowd, etc. This one is just a raw, bare presentation. True, it isn’t about her but because of her divorce she was really emotionally affected. Evidently the producers wanted to do more but she couldn’t take it so they stopped and just overlayed the song over the gaps where she broke. I don’t have any acceptance for someone cheating on their marriage, or the “other woman” who knows he’s married. But it happens so we have to face it.

From the song we don't know if she knew he was married when they got together but that doesn't matter to my point. This song is great vocally and her "performance" is great, however the true message of the song is to wise up and get out of the relationship. that he is using her. The last verse she says I'm up off my knees and next time you want to leave her bed for mine, why don't you stay (with her) because you can't give me what I need. It's not necessarily to make you feel sorry for the other woman but to make you realize that it's a no win situation that causes nothing but pain. to get out of that toxic relationship. Anyway that's my interpretation of the song. A cautionary tale.

Having been over 26 years active duty myself and many others have had many occasions where we were away fom home, family and loved ones. I've witnessed far to many times where during that absence a spouse has strayed. Both male and female, and started a rogue relationship without the other person knowing they were married. Some times the relationship has gotten to the point where the unknowing have fallen in love. And we all know we find it hard to stop loving even after being treated wrongly.
