Are you talking about Sega? Why does everyone think it was Sony that killed the Dreamcast? It was Microsoft, which, up to that point, only made PCs-NO ONE expected them to break into the console market. It didn’t make sense to any of us. After the Dreamcast launched, we all knew that Sony was coming out with their PlayStation 2. We all knew that Nintendo was coming out with a new console, too (known only by its codename back then, “Dolphin”). No one could have expected that Microsoft (again, known ONLY for making PCs at that time-not consoles) would throw a fourth console onto the market. I worked at Toys ‘R’ Us back in 2002, when this all happened. I witnessed, firsthand, what happened to our Dreamcast section, little by little, after the Xbox launched. I’m not an Xbox fanboy, either-I own them all, but play my PlayStation the most.
I was like "okay, it'll be something stupid like $200." Man, how naive I was! I just don't get who they're targeting with this price point. Someone who wants to spend this much on Atari probably already owns the real thing.
Hipster bandwagon geeks, that buy overpriced apple products and game once in a while for a few minutes, then tell everyone how much of a 'gamer' they are.
I bet you anything that it's a case of "Ok, how many do our projections say we're going to sell, and how much money do we need to make on this thing?" and they did the math, and realized they either needed to increase the potential quantity of sales, or raise the price. They chose to raise the price.
The sad/funny thing is, in 2017 when the VCS was announced for $299 as a console-PC, it seemed like it could be a decent little machine if they threw in AMD's brand new Zen APU. It wouldn't compete on a gaming level with current gen consoles, but it would be able to do more while being smaller. Then they announced it would actually use the ancient A10 APUs and everybody lost interest. Then they delayed it for four years and jacked up the price, and now it's nothing but a joke.
The original concept was that the Atari VCS would be a media/streaming PC set-top box for the home entertainment system, so you can stream your apps and Steam library to it for the most part. Problem they took way too long fusing and scraping hardware configurations that the new Nvidia shield come out as a better quality and cheaper price.... TWICE during the 3 years.
It's not. It's quite the opposite actually. It's like loading up on currency for a new country before everyone else starts using it. By the time everyone starts using it, you're already loaded on it. Of course this doesn't apply to the vast majority of crypto currencies. This Atari being a good example of that. It's just trash and a scammy way for Atari to make money back that they've probably blown on nonsense. The SEC will probably be headed their way soon.
Don't the evercade is also overpriced for how limited its features are and it also has sound issues. Get one of the many Chinese handhelds or a pi or a phone with a Bluetooth controller
I bought that Missile Command game on Steam. It's from the developer (as in one guy) that made Ding Dong XL. They are literally games he throws together for mobile and PC to sell for a dollar.
There has to be more than those listed games. Because all the games mentioned here for this new Atari Console were already released on current gen systems. Yeah, including that missile command one, just this past month.
The worst thing about this episode of the Laymen is that now I want some Cajun Chicken...and I live in the german Pampa and there isn't a goddamn KFC in sight. Fuck.
These people are insane. I grew up with the 2600 and would buy a nostalgia product, but when pricing this system it seems Atari forgot that i can run an emulator on my laptop for free. The price is way too high for a retro console. I'd like to know who came up with this ridiculous $400 price tag? This feels as if they stole the money of everyone who contributed to their indiegogo.

I figured the joke was that they were even giving the specs for this thing in the first place. It's a retro console that's designed to play the games packaged in with it. Who cares how much space it has on it or what the specs of the console are, as long as it can run the games it comes with.
i actually think the specs are overkill for what this was supposed to be for. it is like building a pc with a 16 core cpu 32gb ddr4 3600 mhz and an rtx 2080ti to play nes & snes emulator games. If this console will only be for retro games and not actually trying to get new modern games, the people at the top making decisions have no clue what they are doing.
The specs seem completely over the top, those games could probably run on a smart fridge now. Seems like they just developed a pc case that looks like a console and crammed a low spec pc into it. Which is the easiest way to do it but would result in the component cost getting pushed onto the consumer, which might be what we're seeing
Perhaps they think its value is the games library. 100 games for $400 - $4 per game. Trouble is, you can buy decent current gen indie games on Steam for that, and vintage stuff on GOG for half that.
I just bought a PS4 Pro for my friend for $285 USD, shipped to the door.. I still stand with a launch version of the PS5 being $399, maybe it'll be the discless version, but Sony have made it clear they want to ALWAYS stick to the $399 price, and I believe that's what the digital-only version is for.
