Awesome video! You're my go to most of the time when it comes to snake info lol my husband and i are going to be starting our rat breeding project this weekend so thanks for the help!
Breeding rats here in Puerto Rico is a pain in the ass. No shipping here and if your lucky to find Mazurri it will cost $70-75 for a bag of 50lb. Here we are kind of forced to feed our rats dog food or pig growth food. For my water systems i have to order the parts to an address in Florida and then they ship it here to PR. If you guys know a place were water system parts and rodent food are available for shipping to PR that will be awesome.
I might try the rotation method. I have a 4 tub rack (2 growouts and 2 breeding) and yesterday I built a new 6 tub rack (2 grow out 4 breeding). I have been using 1 male and 4 females in each tub and just pulling the males out, I think I'll definitely try 1 male per rack
Im also going to be holding back 16 more females for my new rack, how old/weight should they be before I start to breed them? I know they Can breed at 4-5 weeks but what is a safe age for them to breed?
Nice video didn’t think about swapping the males out like that I will try it. So would you have 1 male per rack then moving down the rack every 2 weeks?
Pat Patterson I know you posted this a year ago lol but I have 4 ball pythons and 2 blood pythons. How many rats do you have breeding to cover your 4 snakes
Just getting started on our rat breeding and having some issues already. Started with two tubs, 1 male in each with 3 females, per the recommendation of the guy I got my rats from. Found one of the males dead the next day and thought maybe we just got him sick. There were no wounds that we could find. So we decided to run with the rotation method described here, rather than replacing the male. Our male went two weeks in the first bin, then we switched him over. The next day we found him severely injured, so now we suspect one of the females in that bin is the problem. We isolated him and tried to rehabilitate him, but over the course of several days, his condition continued to deteriorate. Sadly, we had to end his suffering. Any recommendations for this issue? Not too excited about trying another male in that bin, not knowing which one of the females is crazy. Then we hit another issue. First, I suppose it was also unfortunate that only one of the females from the first bin produced a litter. However, it was 16 pups, so I figured that was a pretty good turn out. We left the two other females in together with her and things were fine for about a week. Then all of a sudden the mother started losing it on the other two. We were in the adjacent room when things went sideways. We heard the commotion and went to find all the pups scattered throughout the tub. One of them was injured and bleeding. Not sure what was going on, we took all the pups out to examine them and get things figured out. My wife was able to get the bleeding to stop on the injured pup (it pulled through btw). Once things were settled down there wasn't much choice but to put them back in the nest. Shortly after the mother attacked one of the others, and we didn't see if it was provoked or not. We observed and it happened again, just from being in proximity, so we relocated the female that was getting attacked. Shortly after the mother attacked the other female in the bin. We observed again and it appeared that all she was trying to do was care from some of the pups, seemingly attempting to nurse them. After another small attack, we moved that female as well. So, now we have a maternity tub, lol. I thought the females co-oped when caring for young. Breeders even recommend keeping retired breeder females for extra nursing. What in the world is going on, lol?
Question for Kurt...how much per bag do you pay for Mazuri rat food. Our local feed store supplies it but it's double the cost of Walpole...FRM is comparible but harder to find here.
Great video as always. Can you tell me where to get the supplies/parts for the watering system and what each piece/part is called? Thanks in advance, love the channel!!

samasia skipperable I use the same food and it’s roughly $25 for a 50lb bag and it’s lasted a while for me with 2 racks setup I’ve gone over a few months now still not halfway through it
A bag of rodent food is roughly $25-$27. It depends on how many rats you have on how long the food will last. And a small rat can cost anywhere between $2 - $5 depending on where you get them.
I have watched your other rat videos and plan to setup my own breeding. One thing you’ve never mentioned in your videos is how much money this actually saves you compared to buying frozen, I would be really interested in a breakdown of the numbers even a simplified version. Love your videos!

And then if it continues you can get another male easy. just because you don't have to go in there a week doesn't mean you can't check on them every 6 hours if there's a problem.
2 things i never hear about, 1st what do you do if you dont need rat pups and you have lots or near adult snakes that need large weaner -small rats to eat , how does it work then , do you just use another tub to take all the babies and let them grow up some first ? if so how do you know what age to remove them from the mother ...and 2nd what no one ever talks about is, if ur not live feeding how do you go about killing and freezing them humanely ?
For a commercial setting where there is an inconsistent demand, you really might consider making a co2 chamber to kill at various stages when you have a surplus, freeze them, and feed them to those garbage dump snakes that are absolutely not picky eaters when you have a particularly high demand week (if you are usually a live feeder). Doing the f/t thing makes it so very much easier to make up for the wax and wane of customers, even if you are only feeding f/t to part of your collection. Another tip I would give about rat breeding, commercial or not, lab blocks are great, but supplement with a little bit of fresh food. Your mamma rats will really appreciate it, and your snakes will really be getting the best nutrition. Yes it's a huge pain compared to just lab blocks if you approach it wrong, but there is a way to make it less painless. Grab a large bag of frozen fruits or veggies, defrost in warm water inside the bag, just toss about 1/8 cup in each tub (not too much that momma rat wont eat it all that day or you've got rotting mess to clean up). Even if you only do it once a week, thats better than not doing it. If you are like me and have veggies or fruits about to go bad because you bought too much one week, use your rats as garbage disposals. Just don't go too crazy with citrus or your males will have issues, and avoid avocados all together. If you just so happen to keep reptiles that eat dubia roaches and already have dubia's going, treat your momma rats to the occasional adult roach, they will love you for it, and that's a huge protein boost to the babies that will be going to your snake.
Damn, I've been buying mice/rats at PetSmart for 4 dollars a dead mouse, to 15 per SMALL rat. Wtf why?! It seems so cheap to set up and care for them wtf!?!
Things I still want to learn is How you set up grow out tubs and how you do that. How you deal with rats that aren’t used for the week. I’m guessing grown out. But what happens when you aren’t needing pinks and you need a ton of wean-smalls?
The grow out tubs are set up the same way but usually are bigger tubs. Rats that aren't used that week go back to the grow out tubs. If you have to many pinks and need more small you just have to let the grow bigger. If you have to many of one size sometimes you can trade them to someone for the right size.
I want a big snake but i want to buy a smaller snake and get used to it and maybe 2 years get a big python i am inlove with cobras but only to watch as you cant have them in scotland but u can buy them on them online
