Just got a Casio Royale... It was like 25 bucks and it's great. I also have a Japanese car. It was cheap and is also great. I took the extra money and put it into my son's college fund. I think I made the correct investment.

You are practicing wise financial planning by saving and not collecting at all when it comes to watches and not splurging on a car. For those who DO collect watches he’s arguing take the money you are going to spend on the hobby and put it toward a grail piece and not a bunch of watches you just like.
You did the right thing. Instead of blowing up money on ultra luxurious goods, we should invest then on things that are necessary.

@TheSilvertrigger I would warn people before they purchased Samsung Galaxy A04 and then they would come back complaining, the best price is always the mid-price unless you have fuck-you money, cheap shit is disposable and never the right choice unless you use it in a way it has to be a disposable object

personally I would rather have 4-5 watches around $300-$500 vs 1 watch worth $2000 simply because I want to have multiple watches with multiple styles for multiple occasions. That being said once I feel like I have 1 watch for each possible occasion then I will start saving for a more expensive piece
Exactly. It is a careful art to avoid buying watches that serve the same niche.
That's kind of what I'm leaning towards: 3-5 beautiful, diverse, good-quality watches in the $300-$1000 range and then maybe, when I retire, I can shoot for the grail, whatever that may be.
That was my attitude, until I bought my first "high end" watch. I enjoy it so much more than my random collection of Seikos, Orients, and Seagulls. It means more to me on my wrist than the others put together.
It has opened my eyes to the exact point made in this video. Save your cash for the nicer watches you truly want, or before you know it, you'll have spent what could have got you way you really wanted.
Now, if you have NO watches, then sure. Go buy a seiko SNK as a casual watch for $50-100, go buy an orient bambino as a dress watch for $150-$250, and then STOP and begin researching and saving for the watches you really want.
Anyway, this video truly hit home, because I have a couple grand worth of cheaper watches I wish I could get my money back for.

@@eyeheartsushi2212 I have a Rolex GMT Master and, if it counts, a Mido Multifort. Other than that, just some basic Seiko 5s, an Orient Bambino, a Seagull 1963, and a citizen stiletto.
This is all a matter of perspective. As a middle-class guy, I can afford to buy a Rolex if I really wanted to, but it would be a stretch for me. Given that I have other expensive hobbies, it's tough to pull the trigger on a so-called luxury watch. As a result, I have found that I truly enjoy the more affordable watches, and I love having a nice collection of watches that I can turn to depending on my mood that day. I have a couple decent dress watches, some nice casuals, and a few nice dive watches as well. People often ask me what watch I am wearing today. Now, if I had skipped all of these affordable, enjoyable watches in order to save up for the grail watch, sure, it might feel good at the time, but that feeling would fade soon enough. Then, I would have been stuck with one watch, every day, knowing that for the price of that watch, I could have so much more. Then again, I am also of the opinion that spending thousands on a watch that doesn't even track time as accurately as a cheap quartz is a foolish decision for all but the most affluent among us.

Luckily you didn’t make that mistake. I did. I bought a Hublot, and after a while I felt it wasn’t worth it, did I get ripped off? Certainly not, but it just wasn’t for me, I listened to too many watch enthusiasts and not my own opinion. I was much more happy with watches below the £1000 mark. I have sold the Hublot and the most expensive watch in my collection now is the Junghans Max bill whilst cheapest is Seiko 5 (which I am more satisfied with than any other watch in my collection as I feel I gained more than its money’s worth). The only comments I got with the Hublot all revolved around asking “wow, is that a Hublot?” whereas the other watches have plenty of compliments and entire conversations. Can I afford ‘luxury watches’? Yes, plenty. Is it worth it for me however? No, it certainly is not. I bought the Hublot for £29k and sold it for £22.5k. My advice for anyone when beginning to buy watches is always listen to watch enthusiasts in understanding the watches and the industry, but when it comes to buying listen only to yourself.
Rob Adams This largely sums up my perspective as well. Also, for me, the cost vs. comfort factor comes into play. I just don't think I would feel socially at ease with wearing a very expensive watch day to day with all the status/class connotations that come with it. Not to mention, I'd constantly be worried about damaging it and losing value, or getting mugged if the wrong person noticed the watch for the wrong reasons. I'm just more comfortable with inexpensive to mid-range pieces that fit the aesthetic I'm after.
All that said....I also very much agree with Teddy's point that impulse buying adds up really fast and can sneak up on you in a hurry. If I was good enough at saving money to collect Rolexes though, I'd be much better off putting that money away for retirement! If I'm being honest, the correct answer for me is probably to have a one watch collection consisting of a Casio F91-W. ;)
Beautifully analysed and from someone who has purchased a couple of high end luxury watches it ended up feeling exactly as you describe. I’ve since gone back to my G-Shock range of which I have a small collection and love the practicality and perfect lifestyle fit of an athletic/ sports guy. I find some of the value for money stuff interesting (Seiko 5) and do enjoy watching a video like this from time to time though.
I mean casio, seiko, timex are durable and aren't overpriced

I’ve always had the philosophy of getting exactly what I want or getting nothing at all. I don’t accept cheap substitutes. I don’t have a lot of money, but in the long run this has worked out for me. Everything I get is minimal, but it’s also quality. You treasure what you buy and it usually lasts you a long time. I find this a lot more satisfying than “settling” for something you really don’t want. It takes a lot of willpower and discipline to hold out, but it’s definitely worth it in my eyes.

I work in a hospital boiler room. Before this I served 8 years in the Navy working in the engine room of steam driven ships. For work a Timex of no more than $40 is best. I once lost my Timex Atlantis in the bilges of the ship and found it a few days later submerged in seawater still working fine. Replaced the strap and it was fine. I can’t justify buying a watch for over $100 on my income and needs. I do have a Bulova but this was a company retirement watch given to my dad and passed down to me when he passed away. A dress Timex for under $100 is about the best I can justify for a purchase of a watch.

I’m the same way. As long as the watch is durable, good looking I’m fine with buying it. I own a timex weekender and a timex expedition. Both great for anything I do. And I can wear them and not be careful, where as I would if I were wearing a $3000 watch.

My first watch was a Seiko 5 (snzf15j) and I was happy for only a month or so, until the novelty of it wore off. I should not have purchased on impulse. I then bought an SKX007J, after months of research and looking at pictures of it from every angle, and absolutely love it. I wear it almost every day and never get bored of it. I also own a $10 Casio F91W lol

I think if you watch my other videos you’ll notice that I never put down affordable watches, hell, I still wear my Casio daily when I workout. This was mostly addressing the unfortunate reality for a lot of people who have their eyes set on a luxury piece and decide to give into their impatient nature and buy something more affordable that they don’t love. Keyword, “don’t”. Am I saying that you can’t love an affordable watch? Absolutely not. Buy what you want! That is the ultimate goal of this video. “The best watch in the world is the one on your wrist.”

Affordability is relative ,what is small money for one fellow is ridiculously expensive for someone else,if you see what I mean ? expensives watches are enjoyable but also a waste of $$$$ when less expensive watches are just as good IMHO.

It's crazy how quickly my concept of "cheap" watches went from between $100 - $300 to $1,000 - $2,000. I started my collection at the beginning of 2020 with a hamilton khaki field mechanical for $300. I thought that was not cheap but also not too expensive. Last month I won an ebay auction for an Omega seamaster 300m for under $2k. Expensive but relatively cheap for what it is I think.

and then there's me who struggled one year to pull the trigger in a Orient Mako 2. Finally got it today and it was totally worth the wait. I think you should never impulse buy, but always think very carefully about the things you spend your money on.

whatsthebigfndeal I really thought I wanted the Mako 2 USA at first, but I'm starting to like the dial on the regular one a lot more. What helps me not buy too many watches is waiting for my wife to buy them as a Christmas or Birthday present, while changing my mind 2 or 3 times before it's time to get one. Just honing in on what I really like.

I collect affordable watches almost exclusively. It's fun for me. I may buy a Tudor Or Omega down the line, but I really enjoy finding excellent watches for under $100.

LOL. I have a large collection. some of them cheap, some of them mid-priced, and some expensive. variety is the key. I love them all and wouldn't sell any of them. some days I wear a $200 Hamilton that I love, and some days I wear my Rolex. just bear in mind that the watch does not make the man, the man makes the watch.
And then there are watches that are not affordable but should be in the affordable class of watches. Im seeing a lot of micro brands that are asking substantial amounts for watches that are clearly not worth it .
You are right about that. In those microbrands defense, it is hard to compete with a company like Seiko when it comes to value given their resources.
Idk, ive seen microbrands with much better specs than seiko. Hell, i got an skx007 because a lot of people said it was a great watch, yet for 200 u get mineral glass and 7s26. I just don’t get it.
I was curious about what you meant with "affordable watches" because I have a couple of cheap ones, so I clicked on the video. Then you said "anything less than 300 dollars" and I looked with sadness on my "collection" of watches which consists of timepieces I bought for less than 20 bucks each.

Expensive watches are less accurate at telling you the time. Expensive watches are only more expensive because people for subjective reasons decided that they worth was higher. Cheap watches if they are beautiful for you then keep them, realistically there is not much difference unless the expensive watch has gold or diamonds.
Just because some guy wants to sell a watch for 80K and skew the scale doesnt make a 300 dollar watch inexpensive. I think 300-500 is the max value for enjoyment you can get out of a watch. its all about perspective you can get an expensive watch and say, "ooohhhh this guy handle polished it with a stick of wood." Is that really worth blood and sweat of the daily grind for some people for YEARS of work. Hell no. the orient, seiko, and citizen brands are the pinnacle of common sense affordablilty and usefulness.

What I like is that there's such a wide array of highly desirable, well-made watches in the sub-$300 range. That price point allows me to have more than one watch that I really enjoy wearing. My Orient Bambino was only about $130, and it's stylish and well-made enough that I'll hand it down to my kids one day.
A friend is very wealthy, he owns watches in the 200K range and many others in the 40K plus range. We were out and about and I was wearing one of his gold Rolex watches and him a 200K custom watch. We go into a very high end watch shop in LA the man of course looks at my arm and his and then says to me, what's your preference in watches? My response, "Citizen" they just make sense to me. No, high end for me, I own citizen watches, a Seiko and one specialty watch with Nixie Tubes. I'm very far from wealthy, so why would I spend the cash on a watch, I like them but I prefer my other hobbies to telling time. In honesty I think my Seiko Presage with chocolate brown face is pretty amazing and it makes me feel 70's cool, when I wear it. Wear something that makes you feel good, Swatch to Seiko, really doesn't matter if your happy sporting it.

@De St I actually as wearing citizen watches at that time, I didn't own a Seiko. I only wore his watch because he offered it and the people we meeting his associates would likely see me more in their category of society. I'm a regular guy, not in to bling. I would say, yes, I had women "gold diggers' checking me out more as I was wearing a gold rolex and a 40K diamond ring, which was his.
I would love to have a Rolex or a seamaster. But i am at the skx level, and i will stay at the skx level till i die. Sad but true.
There is nothing wrong with that though. I still enjoy my affordable pieces as well. Keep grinding though brother, you never know what can happen.

After this video I looked at my watch collection from Casio dive watches to g shock and Seiko and Esquire and added them up I think I need to calm down not that I need an expensive watch I don't want one I would rather put that money in my house pay my house off faster retire enjoy life maybe buy one but a great video thanks

Watches are an interesting paradox. I think you can simultaneously appreciate and enjoy all types of watches at all price points and also realize that if we're truly honest it's an item that we really don't need and the money could be spent better elsewhere. So at the end of the day as long as you're not being financially irresponsible buy away and enjoy it if it makes you happy. Certainly watch collecting is not as dangerous as other vices out there.

tenylegnincsevem I bought a $64 Seiko 5 SNK809 last week to get me started as my first mechanical watch. I already owned 3 Citizen (Solar Powered) Eco-Drives purchased over the years since 2005. I pretty much always wear long sleeves and have to put my watches in the window sill to charge. I'll definitely keep an automatic charged up.
It's definitely easy to fall into impulse purchase territory, thoguh.
I am new to this hobby. One rule I have for myself is before I purchase any watch I research both the brand and model for a minimum of seven days. If after an entire week of scrapping the internet I’m still in love with the watch. I allow myself the joy of purchasing it. We all have different taste and desires. Never buy a watch because someone else tells you it’s the best watch and by the same token never decide to not buy a watch because someone else doesn’t like it. One of things I have enjoyed the most about this hobby is learning. Learning all the history and brands, different materials and designs. Decide for yourself how many watches do you want for your own collection. What brands do you like. What colors, materials and style do you like. What size wrist do you have. What’s the appropriate size case for you. How much are you realistic able to afford versus how much you are actually willing to spend. Remember at the end of the day this is a hobby not your livelihood. My watch collection currently consists of three watches and is growing at a slow and healthy pace. Honestly I agree with this video. Don’t spend all your money on affordable watches. Collect a few prize pieces along the way as you research and learn value & appreciation for craftsmanship and quality. Eventually you’ll be able to identify your holy grail of a watch or a small handful of watches you’ll really enjoy. I do not collect simply for the sake of collecting. I collect to wear, enjoy and experience living a life we’re my collection is just that, my collection.

This year I'm saving for a vacation, but next year I'll save for a watch that really turns me on.
That's nice...Now how about a reality check? Unless I have a 100,000 dollar a year job, a Rolex/Oris/Omega is out of the question. If the damn thing gets stolen (or breaks), I have lost a large (for me) amount of money/time. It is simply not worth it. The time or the risk. A Toyota Camry will do better than a Rolls Royce, in this case.

I put $50 a Month away in a Tax free savings account.
I also have my debit car rounding up my purchases so if I spend 1.75 on a coffee. Rounded too $2 and 0.25¢ goes to my savings. (upto $5)
Or if I buy a $88.72 worth of Gas. It's rounded too $90

I went 3 years like this... And in the end, A used Breitling Super Ocean on my wrist. Couldn't be happier.
Understandably I get the repair/maintenance issue...but that's such a insignificant risk that I don't even worry. And a service... Which won't be beaded for 5 years will cost be about $250.

I love waiting for them to arrive and the fun of opening them up. They are just about all divers too. Mostly Automatic with a few Quartz....I need counseling...lol

If someone assumes the more they spend on an item, the better it is, they can get fooled just as fast. Many items that cost more are built more complex and require more frequent and higher maintenance cost. The parts also usually cost more. An example are you tube videos telling consumers not to buy a Mercedes. The depreciation is high and a shock absorber for example costs over $800.00.
I agree with you! I will say the upkeep for the Benz is certainly a higher percentage of the total bottom line then say a new Rolex. That said, you can't ride around in a Rolex lol.

Smart, coherent video Teddy. I have a 1969 Rolex Date just-stainless with a gold fluted bezel-that my grandparents gave me. It had been sitting new in a drawer. It's 36mm and a bit small in today's world. I still wear it.
In 1988 I bought a used 1971 Omega Speedmaster. I sold it for $1900 in 2011 because it needed $800 in work. I then bought a mint used Victorinox Titanium XLS Chronograph Classic for $240. It's quartz, but with a high-quality, complex, repairable ETA 251.262 27 jewelled movement.
Except for the movement, the quality of the Victorinox is equal to the Speedmaster. A year ago I bought the Bulova Moon Watch bracelet model used for $285. Except for the movement, it's every bit the quality of the Speedmaster...maybe better. And it has Bulova's incredibly accurate Precisionist movement with a silky smooth second hand. I feel no reason to revisit an expensive Swiss piece.
When the Orient Star Classic can be bought for under $400, I have zero hankering for plus-$3000 watches. It's every bit as good at almost any premium plus $3000 watch.
Definitely a valid point. However I will say that two of my cheapest watches are also my favorites. My Seiko SKX and SRP are fabulous to wear and look at - they compete quite well with my Rolex, Panerai, Zenith and Tudor.
So my advice is to pick high value pieces that you love and can afford - don’t buy in haste. Impulse decisions are the real danger, and also deprive you of the best part of watch buying...the hunting and obsessing!
Buy what you love and what you can afford. If it means you have to save in order to pay for something more expensive responsibly, do it. That is my thoughts. Thanks for watching, Chris.
Your average person could never afford a 3-4 thousand dollar watch. It is also not practical for the average person to use one. Also by limiting yourself to expensive luxury watches you miss out on a whole world of significant cool watches. I think that the person who has to have a Rolex Submariner, a Omega Seamaster and a Tag Carrera really don't love watches and are just buying them foe the status. I do agree though and this aplies to just about everything don't cheap out and make do. Get what you truly want.

I have a timex weekender, Casio f91, and a Rolex datejust, nothing wrong with the expensive watches, and i love watches.

I tend to think buying several affordable watches is an important part of the learning process. (Within reason of course.) Those early watches teach us the difference between what we imagine we will like; and what we truly enjoy. One has to develop their taste somehow, preferably before the bigger purchases start.

I was saving up for an Omega Seamaster, and had planned on purchasing it in the next year or so. Even though I had the money, I came across the Dan Henry 1962 Panda dial. I know it is considered an affordable watch (and by God it is), but I absolutely fell in love with it, even more so than the Seamaster.
Both are beautiful watches, clearly different appeals, and, I wasn't concerned specifically about the type of watch (diver vs chrono).
The price of the watch had little to do with the purchase (as I fell in love with the dial, and think I like both the Seamaster and the 1962 about the same), but when I saw the price at only $260 I couldnt resist. It was a watch I loved, and didnt care it wasnt a mechanical/automatic. It was something that, I felt I would enjoy as much as the seamaster even though it is about 1/15th of the price.
I think, someone shouldn't be mega concerned about the price, as long as they know what they are buying, and find something they love, not just sort of like.
Good video. Keep up the consistent stream of videos. I agree that you shouldn't buy 10 affordable watches out of impulse. Especially since your wrist can only wear 1 at a time. However I don't agree that more expensive watches are always better than more affordable ones. People should be content with owning one or two affordable watches. People shouldn't feel like they need a rolex or omega to be able to have a watch they can enjoy.
I absolutely plan on it! And you are so right about that. I figured that was self evident, but I could see how people could infer that I was saying affordable pieces can’t be sought after all the same. Should have probably addressed that more explicitly.
I get as much enjoyment From my Citizen Eco-Drive as I do from a Submariner, plus I don’t have to worry about damaging it. Part of the hobby that I enjoy is finding unique or vintage watches.

I agree to a certain point... I think starting your collection with a few affordable (cheap) watches is not a bad idea. It enables you to try out different types and styles of watches before spending a lot more on a watch (you think) you lust after the most. Besides that, if you save up only for your grail watch... would you be willing to wear it each day? :)
I have "affordable" watches that I love equally some arguably more) than my expensive pieces. The rule is this, as quoted from Spike Feresten from a Hodinkee episode: "Watch design transcends price".

I agree with your post and also with the theme of the video. I have quite a few watches that cost under a hundred dollars that are spectacular in my humble judgement. Yes, they're not in the same class as the luxury pieces in my collection, but I get a big kick out of them and that's all that counts.

I’m currently saving for an Omega Seamaster - a goal. I went ahead and bought Junghans Max Bill automatic (from your website)to fill the need for an every day watch. So pleased with the Max Bill which will stay in my collection for a long time. I have been tempted with the affordable watches however, will try to stay the course and get that special watch later.
I sort of agree with you. Having said that, it's all relative. I just bought an omega seamasters 120m. It was $800, but had I waited, and saved I could have bought an omega that I would have loved rather than one I just like.

I’ve been into watches for just over a year now and can say I’ve experienced this. The real issue I find is the that you end up buying affordable watches (that I do love for what they are, don’t get me wrong) to fill a gap in a ‘collection’ (For me it was styles, like dress, diver etc) and while I love the watches, I’ve recently purchased a more high end watch that I had my heart set on getting and now I just don’t want to take it off unless I’m wearing a Casio for work.
Which has left my other watches with little time on the wrist and more time in the box, with little motivation to rotate them because my higher end piece just feels too good.
Lesson learned. I’ll now be saving each year and make maybe one or two purchases of watches that really make me happy.

Well that's your own fault. You didn't do financial planning, good savings or investments. Most people live to be consumers so it's understandable.
Reading the comments, this video seems to have erred in making the assumption that most people ultimately want and are trying to get to a Rolex. As a photographer, I definitely agree with Teddy's preference for a leaner line-up that covers all bases, but like cameras, some people just like amassing a broad and diverse collection of the things they collect (in this case watches), and you just can't get there if every piece is going to be a Rolex. For those types of collectors, buying affordable and often fits the bill.

Cheap quality watches are great. The issue is not cheap or expensive. The issue is impulse buying. When I first brought my swatch irony, I was looking at the watch shop window for about 6 months. I was looking at other watches also just to make sure, this is the one. I wanted to buy it on the on the 2nd week but lucky I waited 6 months. 4 years later, this is a watch I love and I still love it. It has a bit of scratches on it :/ but what can you expect. It still has character.
I also did the same with my new Casio G shock square and I love that as well. Now I have 2 watches I truly love. I'm loving my G shock :)
You have to treat your purchases like your buying an expensive watch. I'm looking into the Seiko 5 but I still have to stick to my rules. Look at the shop window many times and wait 4 to 6 months. Now I have 2 watches, I can just take my time and take a year or 2 years instead.
Never be in a rush to buy a watch. You might end up buying something you don't like.

Good advice, tho if I had saved enough for a luxury watch I'd buy another motorbike, or spend it on a holiday. For me, an affordable watch does everything I want/need & I just don't see the value in a luxury timepiece, & personally I really dislike Rolex & most luxury brands as for me they're just too pretentious. But we're only here once, so buy what will make you happy & sod what other folk think. Cheers 👍👍

doesn't it all tie in with the truisms "When you earn more, you spend more" and "don't buy a boat until you can afford three of them"... little incremental changes to spending habits might have you spending what was once a month's rent on a singular item and the upkeep costs of luxury goods will put you in the red if you haven't followed the simple rule

Im 14 and im really getting into watches. For me even 200 to 300 dollars is a lot for a watch. As a gift for my birthday is got the Lorus RH995BX9. It is my daily driver so to speak. The price is around 50 dollars but you still het 2 year warranty and Lorus is part of Seiko. It is quartz buy the quality is still great
I do strive to sometime have a Rolex, not just because the name but because it is a watch that van Stay with you your whole Life. For now i am happy with my watch. My grandfather noticed nu recent interest in watches and gave me a old commodore quartz watch. Also he gave me a pocket watch wich he wore for 20 years, IT is loud as heck but very Nice.

Be proud of your watch collection -- most 14-year-olds wouldn't have the ability to save for $200-$300 watches. The fact that you have the drive and discipline to collect what you have, speaks volumes. If I were your mother, I would be very proud of you. And by the way, your English is better than many American's.
Teddy, there are multiple reasons to buy affordable watches. In the case of the $600 vs. $3000 watch, I agree. However, for those getting into the game late, trying to save up $10,000 for a watch (The Grail, if you will), means that you MIGHT get it before you die...maybe. Also, there are very well made watches out there that aren't $3,000-$10,000, and part of that money is in the name...branding, sponsorships, etc. That money has to come from somewhere, and when you have the likes of famous athletes and superstars repping your brand, then that turns a $1,000 watch into a $3,000 watch.
To add to the debate, I just bought a Seiko 5 because I needed a "beater" dress watch with a white dial. I'd rather have a Nomos or a Stowa (I like center second hands)...or a Junghans, but I don't want to go crawling around in industrial spaces with a $1,500 to $3,500 watch.

I wouldn't think $300-600 watch is considered a cheap watch. To put it into perspective, a $20 quartz watch is about as accurate as a $5,000 watch. Going from $20 to $300 is a HUGE step up in quality, and to label them both as "meh, its cheap" is a really inaccurate statement. Of course you're going to love a $5,000 watch more than a $300 one, but does a $4,700 price difference really warrant that slight step up of what you really want?
I apologize for not watching the whole video (yet), but for me it comes down to picking a watch for a certain function or situation. Every day, diver, dress. And maybe field and flight.

Teddy, I totally agree. Now, on the flip side, I'm super happy that I bought affordable watches, event if I just "liked" them and got rid of them down the line. Buying a vintage or second hand piece will reduce the risk: if you don't like it, you can just resell it for pretty much the same amount of money. This is not true for a luxury piece that you get at full retail (or even new with a discount at an AD).
Even if I account for the money that I lost selling my affordable watches, I'm not even close to 500$ (and I got rid of quite a lot of them). The good part is: I got to experiment with watches in metal, understand what I like and don't like about them (size, color, texture, bracelets, weight, you name it). Then either sell them or give them as gifts to relatives who were repeatedly complimenting me on those ;)
I actually killed 3 birds with 1 stone : enjoyment, experimentation and care (of the loved ones). To this day, my brother still loves the small Timex Weekender that I gave to him. Not because it's a watch that has tremendous value (well, it actually has, for the money), but because it was - at some point in time - mine.
Now: impulse buys (3 watches in a week, every month)? Not saving up for that special piece? Looking for quantity over quality and box checking? Nope. You're definitely right!

The Slender Wrist I agree with you man! I will say just to play devil’s advocate is that many affordable watches don’t hold their value at all. Some do, but the majority I sold i certainly came out on the negative, while my luxury pieces that I sold also gave me the luxury of reselling for sometimes a gain. Of course, there is cases where this is true and untrue. Good conversation here though. Thanks for this comment.

Agreed. Delayed gratification is so much more enduring and enriching. Not a watch story, but I wanted a pair of Sonus Faber speakers which were so far out of my price range as to border on the esoteric. Five years of saving later, they are the statement piece in the listening room and never fail to make me smile. Lesson: anticipation leads to enjoyment.

You know what this reminds me of? This guy who was a photographer who was fascinated with tattoos. He took pictures of hundreds of people and their tattoos. But here's the kicker...he didn't have any himself. His rationale was I can't have a thousand of them I like so I'll just admire other peoples.
You could look at it the same way as watches. I just bought a Orient Ray with a slightly scratched bracelet as an Amazon return for 90 dollars. But I can still peruse the internet and look at the thousands of watches that cost thousands or millions of dollars and appreciate them. And I also, like my Ray...I call her Raylene. It's just a thing between us. I can't describe it.

Well.... as a non rich beginner collector, I love affordable watches. I can have a collection, later I will have learned and I can up grade each type as the inclination comes... trade in my seiko 5 feild watch for the hamilton... BTW just picked up a Casio Duro on e bay for 27$, looks great on a Bond Nato strap...
