David Casella discusses Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, a collectors favorite due to its unique shape, slow growing, compact size.
For outdoor growing the bottle palm USDA Hardiness Zone is 10-11. They are not frost or freeze tolerant. So when grown in colder zones should be grown in pots to bring in or planted in a protected area of the yard and cover with frost cloth and other precautions are needed.

Can you do one in the majesty palm? Or Washingtona palm?
Can you do a indepth nurturing video on Bismarck palms? more specifically nurturing them from youth in 25 gallon -60 gallon barrels , wqater reuirement, fungside, & fertilizer trewtments , how to differentiate between a male and female .....how to detect if the palm is healthy, or lacking nutrients.....
I'm in Spartanburg County and I have a bottle palm in ground for its second below freezing winter. It came back last year with new leaves. It looks dead right now but I'm hoping for another come back this Spring 2023. I want this out front for SC to see ... any suggestions on how to winterize this outdoor palm? As, you are great with Palms. Blessings.
Great video..thank you...I live in Southern Ontario Canada and have a bottle palm in a 25 gallon pot. It seems to be doing well since I brought in indoors in October before the frost hit. My question is about the old fronds at the bottom. Should I trim at the next ring scar or will they naturally fall off?
Hello sir, can I ask something.. What is the difference of champagne palm tree and the bottle palm tree is the same same sir?
Wow klass❤..
Thank you for the info but I would like for you to tell me exactly what kind of fertilizer I need for this bottle palm tree with the yellowing leaves. If you can put a link I would appreciate it

Fun fact, these can actually regrow from the roots after a winter death. I bought one 4 years ago dirt cheap at a hardware store not even knowing what it was, and it has died and came back 3 of those four winters. It even came back this year after the big Feb storm. So if you live in zone 9b and want a stunted novelty to impress you with it's pluckiness... Okay, i do have a serious question, I recently bought an arrangement of three, all of them about the size of the one you have in a 17" diameter\ 17" tall grower pot, and I would like to know how long it can stay in that pot before it becomes root bound. Also, what is the best way to fertilize a potted plant where the distance from a trunk to the edge of the pot is at most 2"?
Thanks for the fun fact Josh. As for your question, there are many variables that would dictate how long it may or may not take for the tree to become root-bound.
I would suspect you might be able to leave it in there for 12-18 months before having to worry about that. I'd broadcast slow-release palm fertilizer evenly across the top of the soil in the pot.
David-what do you recommend for spears on this palm that don't ever open up? I have 3 spears on 3 bottle palms grouped together and none are opening up? Its been over six months now --thx
Typically a palm that has new spear leaves, especially multiple spear leaves on a Bottom palm, could be an indication that the soil the palm is growing in deficient in Boron!
@@davidcasella2934 what do you recommend then- dont I want to have new spear leaves for it to grow? There is one spear per palm- not multiple in each- thx David
how do you trim off the bottom so that the rings will show?
How much you have these for? I plan to go plant shopping in Jax
Right now according to our system we have one 30 gal for $200. Before you come give us a call to make sure it is still in stock at 904-996-0712 you can hit the garden center option when calling in.
What would be the price for a palm like that ?
Our 30-gallon Bottle palms are currently $249.00.
how do you tell the difference between the bottle and spindle palms?
Spindle is small on the bottom and big on the top whereas bottom is big on the bottom and smal on the top
Wow beautiful
