Get health insurance. FYI, holiday travel health insurance is expensive the world over.
It's unnecessary.
@@memelord3117 FALSE. Get insurance if you're coming to the US, ESPECIALLY if kids are involved.
@@O2life 😂😂 why
@O2life fear mongering.
@@memelord3117 If you're under 50.
2:51 A hospital cannot refuse to provide emergency care, that doesn't mean they aren't going to bill you for it.
And they won't provide any follow up care without payment or insurance. They'll stabilize you in the moment and then send you on your way.
They also won't do a cheap procedure in the first place that would prevent you from needing expensive emergency care.
@@O2life This isn't true. You can actually get a lot done in the ER, including follow up procedures.
@Trifler500 I am proof that's not true. I required an extensive procedure to remove a malignant adrenal gland. It was life threatening, expensive and I had no insurance at all. Went through the Free Clinic @ Baylor and was never charged a penny. A previous, cheaper procedure (Ultrasound) is when the followup ensued.
That’s true but they didn’t make me pay it. A charity paid it. 38k so I’m glad they did pay it!
In America we have EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act). If you go to an ER and you are in danger they have to stabilize you (make sure you’re safe) insurance or no. Otherwise they lose all Medicare and Medicaid funding. You can still get care if you don’t have insurance. You’ll just get a bill after. I work in healthcare for a big medical system, we have charity care for people who can’t pay.
And more often than not, once you're stabilized they're kicking you out or sending you to the county hospital
@@ChuckHuffmasternot true. Worked in hospitals. Had patients there for weeks because they was no room to transfer. I had to take care of them. Show me the stats that show more often than not. Oh you don’t know what you’re talking abt. Got it.
@@Ben-x7y they transfer uninsured patients daily to county hospitals as they should and when is said " kick them out " I meant transfer
@@ChuckHuffmaster bro I work in hospitals, this is false. You can’t transfer a person with no room. Plus, what’s wrong with a county hospital? Worked in those too. The care is on par with everything else. Smug right white liberal with your privilege just shows you have no clue.
@@ChuckHuffmastermore lies by someone who doesn’t work on a hospital. Rich white guy with no clue.
The Emergency Room can't deny emergency care. It's the law.
Random fact i know about Portugal... When the Templars fell in France they showed up in Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland and others. The Templars in Portugal renamed themselves the "Knights of Christ" and continued on for hundreds of years. When Christopher Colombus was looking for funding for a voyage west of europe, the Knights of Christ encouraged the crown to help sponsor and Christopher Colombus allegedly joined the order.
Almost all hospitals have a fund for people who don't have insurance and limited income. You must apply for help. Also, you can buy travel insurance which can be used for emergencies while in a foreign country. We also have walk-in urgent care clinics which are inexpensive you can use
Urgent care is a God send they are way better than the hospital. I used it for a ruptured eardrum. If was 300 dollars for the service and medice to heal my eardrum.
Travel medical insurance is important to have anytime you travel outside where your regular medical insurance covers you. This is true for > everywhere < and not just for the USA. Travel medical insurance is cheap and sold by airlines & travel agencies. Your regular medical insurance > may < let you purchase a "rider" which covers you while abroad.
Travel insurance is well worth it. We had it when we went to Europe. People forget about Evac, travel back to home can be very expensive.
So in America it’s illegal for hospitals to refuse treatment they will bill you but if you don’t have good credit then it doesn’t matter anyway
Also there are usually state agencies or other foundations that will give a grant to cover. That’s why hospitals have social workers to help navigate.
This, I have a friend who is a surgeon now. We went to school together but I did accounting. I would see his medical bills just pile up. He never paid them, and to his credit they never retrieved it. He also had the other problem USA gets stereotyped with, which is student debt. He had a LOT (by a lot I mean 250K, he went to work for an employer who can wipe it after so many years.
All I am saying is that there is the law, but there are a million workarounds. A lot of the things people think you would die for in USA isn't really a big problem.
I have family in EU and USA and I actually find that if you know the system then way more is possible in the USA.
The truth is most college degree jobs offer Healthcare and it's kind of calculated in your salary. If not, there is Obamacare aka Health Marketplace where you obtain insurance for cheap or free. I watch a lot of travel videos that include some of the worst problems, and we have the opposite. It is bountiful. Now you have to talk about the real reason people fail, they don't work consistently or choose a lazy lifestyle. This is the real reason, but the ones who don't prosper will blame the system. No. There is no social welfare fallback like Europe. Americans forget they earn WAY more than most first world countries to cover their woes. I find that some people thrive and make a dream, and some people aren't meant to have freedom of will and choice. They will make bad decisions over and over. America allows you to win big or lose. Other countries are a bit more training wheelized. The more Euros I see come to USA, the more it unlocks what's possible on a large scale for them. I am just saying this because people take the internet word for word, and I love my country. There are people who try to use the system to live for free 24/7. When they complain they are more likely to get catered to.
It's illegal to refuse EMERGENCY treatment. Any kind of follow-up care will not be provided without insurance or pay. So they stabilize you in the ER and then send you home. If you decline again and make it to the ER, they'll stabilize you again and send you home again. They won't actually treat any problems unless you pay or have insurance. If you just need antibiotics or something, you could take the hit and pay a few hundred dollars out of pocket.
It’s been that way forever … it’s the political elite that lie about it …
So you plan to go through life with bad credit, skimming and scheming where you can? Best of luck trying to buy a car or a home or living a middle class life.
You can also work out a payment plan. If you are injured or taken ill, you WILL be treated at any ER. But travel insurance is a good option.
"Cowboys", i.e. ranch hands are more numerous in the Plains/Intermountain States. Simply because that is where the larger ranches are. More ranch, more hands- simple economics.

Make sure you have insurance. They will treat you, but bill you. They can't refuse care to anyone.
I know someone had a heart attack in Korea. Had to pay bill in full before allowed to leave.
In the Philippines you get refused and can die in the street if you don’t have money up front.

Non Americans should ALWAYS get great insurance while visiting the USA just as Americans need 100% insurance when visiting other countries...just in case

I live in Southern Illinois, in the summer the entire place is green, more or less if it's not concrete it's green and the green will grow over everything
A fun fact about Portugal:
Portugal produces over half of the world's cork! It has a vast amount of cork forests, which make it the largest cork producer globally!
That is cool! I actually didn't know cork was a specific type of wood.
@@trannigan3349cork is from the bark of a Cork Oak Tree, it's not the wood itself. Cork farmers are very good at getting the bark off the tree and keeping the tree alive so it will produce more cork.
To me its absolutely MIND BLOWING that some people believe every American is rich.... 🤯 The cost of living right now is kind of crazy and there are so many people who are struggling......I think we all have been at a point where we all were completely down and out. #5
The "average income of Americans" is a lot higher than the majority of us actually earn because of all the billionaires & millionaires in this country,
Most Countries are not even half the size the USA is. Every state has its "rich people", its "poor people" and it's "lower middle class" and it's "Middle class". The smallest percentage of people in each is Top people are the smallest % and the Bulk are- middle or lower middle class-, then the poor (government assistance only for various reasons). Currently our lower middle class are (working pay check to pay check and running up personal debt via needing to buy things with credit just to make the monthly bills) when just 5 years ago, they were buying their first lil starter home and comfy with a lot of work put in to be so. Same amount of work put in but, going into debt now. I hope to see change in the next couple years. People not of the USA, really should think in the lines of, every state is like its own lil country, each has a local leadership that steers the state one way or another all the while, not going against Federal rulings and laws and our Constitution. Every state is subject to Federal tax and funding and every state adds their own taxes and funding programs within the state since, each state is not like the other, each do have their own perks and problems the local government has to deal with. I mean, I live in the PNW and in my area, we have never had to worry about gators and other swamp critters or tornados and hurricanes. heh heh heh Think we have had two small earthquakes in the last chunk of years, I didnt even notice the last one... everyone had to tell me we had one.
There are a lot of rich people here in the US, but they are a drop in the bucket because there are soooooo many people here. I am on my social security and must go to the food bank!
You realize that compared to the rest of the word, the vast majority of Americans ARE rich. 33k and above is the top 1% of the world. We are one of the only countries with fat poor people. Our homeless have iPhones and clean water. If you can scrape together $0.50/ day, you have a gym and shower available to you every day. The vast majority of Americans in financial trouble live beyond their means, because that's what they're used to. Most of the people I see who talk about their financial troubles are paying $2000/ month in a downtown apartment with an $80,000 vehicle and have every premium streaming service they can buy, and eating out 10-15 times a week, while making $60k/ year. Not to say that the economy isn't shit right now, but irresponsible spending is rampant in the US
@@TheCoolwhippedDoesn’t matter how we compare to the rest of the world when we’re talking about the PRICE we pay for goods/services in our country.
Cowboys reside in every state, even California has a lot.
Cowboys originated in Mexico so naturally there would be a ton in California.
Especially the Central Valley.
California has some of the original black cowboys
Since the advent of four wheelers and other such vehicles cowboys and their horses have less and less to do. No state has a lot of Cowboys A state like Wisconsin for example might have some Cowboys but really, we don't really need any of them. They are a thing of the past and are no longer necessary.
@@greghamann2099 Whether you think they're necessary or not is irrelevant. I went to high school on the central coast, the majority of kids were 'cowboys' & 'cowgirls'. It's a culture that is a long way from disappearing.
Cowboys are not southern. Cowboys are western.
Well I have a ranch in Iowa… what am I? You can be a cowboy anywhere.
@@colebaker5651 youre a rancher, usually cowboys work for ranchers 😏
the term "cowboy" started out as a label for young farmhands in Florida
Plenty of cowboys in the SE. Here in Georgia we just call them Farmers. Realistically they're cattle ranchers/farmers. Most also have hogs crops etc. my family use to own a big cattle farm. Now we just lease the land. My entire family has grown up farming here in Georgia since the 1600s. Scott, Irish, and Cherokee. My friend is a USAF master Sargent, his son is a pro bull rider. His son was army EOD in Iraq, and Afghanistan. He's got a big family that's all around the US even Alaska. My family is mostly in the SE FL ,GA, TN ,and both Carolinas. Cattle farming is popular over the entire nation even in Alaska and New York. For example the Amish are big in dairy farming. Everyone around here mostly raises for meat not dairy.
There are cowboys in Arkansas, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico also. Those states are western and southern in my opinion.
If you dont have insurance you can always find an Urgent Care facility that handles non emergency illness for cash or credit payment methods.
Urgent care isn’t cheap and it doesn’t cover everything…. And don’t forget the cost of presentation drugs that the Urgent Care docs will prescribe!
I do customer service for a union and I speak to a lot of Portuguese people here in the New England states and in New York and yes I think you and your family will like America and I hope you guys have a wonderful time
Hospitals will work with people too - will allow you to make small payments on a monthly basis. Note: I live in a working class town, a lot of working poor, and many with big trucks and houses, but also tons of debt, and struggling to get by. Rural people often need trucks for work, and have skills to build, repair, and maintain what they have.
Andre, if you get sick, go to an "urgent care clinic". They are vastly less expensive than a hospital emergency room. Use the emergency room for things like car accidents, heart attack, stroke, surgery that can't wait, etc.
In certain states, there is a huge Portuguese influence in the food and culture. 10:40
He's Russian, just living in Portugal
In the US, many (healthy) people don’t even know but as someone who became disabled while out of work with no insurance, I can assure you, we all get treated.
If you’re like I was and unemployed, a social worker can/will meet with you before you’re even admitted to the hospital. Your fees/bills will be eliminated if you can prove you have either no income or no sufficient income. They cannot deny you treatment.
For those making a living wage, you will receive treatment but will find a bill in the mail that is pretty ridiculous and it can absolutely put you into debt. You can fight these charges in court if you are suffering a hardship but the burden will be on you to prove you cannot pay without harming yourself and/or your family, financially.
Yup, had to run my adult nephew into the ER cuz his heart was acting all weird just couple months ago. Took him straight in, how he deals with the cost, IDK.. I was just the driver. heh.
A huge percentage of Americans can’t afford any emergency situation without having to scramble or borrow money. The middle class is disappearing. This is partly why politics is so crazy. You got the elite/poor and woke/conservative extremes
Cowboys are found west of the Mississippi. If they are east of the Mississippi river they are greenhorns, all hat and no cattle.
😂😂
Actual cowboys are cowboys because they run large ranches and the horse is what is still best to use in miles of rough terrain when they heard the livestock. Do have a lot of small ranches as well but, those that heard it is an all day job lol yes, they usually will have large trucks as well, they need them to transport feed and other things around constantly. There is as well, people who just do horse ranches, not really cowboys as in, they are not doing the JOB an actual cowboy does but, like to ride and some do sport or horse clubs and show. I grew up with horses on a small 7acre, rode English pleasure and not western lol first time I sat in a western saddle, it felt stiff and I couldn't feel my horse under me, took a bit to get use to and it didn't help that I trained my lil Arab mare was trained under an English bridle and saddle., I dont think she was comfy swapping out for a Western.
I wouldn't say so my family has been raising cattle since the 1600s in soperton Georgia. Scott Irish and Cherokee. Over 2k head at one time. Now my uncle just leases the land. My friend is a USAF master Sargent. His son is a pro bull rider from Georgia. He's retired EOD served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cattle farming is common around the entire US. Even the Amish, and Cajuns.
@@vi-r22 yeah in Georgia people don't use horses to heard any livestock. It's not needed. Cattle don't climb mountains especially in southeast Georgia. Considering Appalachia starts North of ATL, Much more likely to get the horse stuck in the swamp in SE GA. Horses don't last long stuck in the mud. The cattle yards/prairie is fenced. They'll go to the pond to swim/drink and just walk around eating grass/hay/grain. Steers bulls heffers and calf's they all heard just fine using a pickup. Diesel is cheaper than the horse and so is the truck if you're a owner, operator, technician. Horses you gotta get a vet and a smith/farrier.
More cowboys in the CA central Valley than probably most southern states.
You should get insurance. The cost of Healthcare here is really expensive. If anything happens, it could bankrupt your family.
Not if you refuse to pay their scam bill. I had insurance for a few years when i could afford it but I couldn't keep up with the ridiculous monthly payments. Let it go to a creditor, then i can pay a reduced bill to settle it, which at least that payment is more fair. Our insurance companies are constantly denying claims, and overcharging for everything. It's a total scam. I'd pay of I could. But I can't
If you don't have insurance, they WILL treat you in an emergency, but there are 2 things to consider: They'll do the minimum necessary to deal with an emergency, but you'll end up with a bill far larger than what you would have paid for insurance. And if there is recommended follow up care that's not strictly necessary, even if it would make a big difference for long-term outcome--they will either require a huge payment up front, or tell you to go back to your own country to deal with it.
Unless his whole family becomes ill and is hospitalized. He will pay more for the insurance than he will just paying out of pocket. For a simple ER visit, it will run you between $1200- $3500, depending on what they need to do. And if you tell them that you don't have insurance, many times they'll knock a zero off.

In my experience (I’ve been working in healthcare for almost 20 years) the opposite is true. The hospital over-treats because they know they can bill for it. My dad just took a spill on the driveway because he was carrying something too heavy and got a scrape and a bruise on his torso. Immediately drove himself to the hospital because he’s a raging hypochondriac and they did testing to rule out internal bleeding and stroke as a possible cause of the fall (once again, he was carrying something heavy and lost his balance). Thankfully he has excellent insurance or he’d have to pay thousands for a minor injury.
@@Ltlmscrl You will be given emergency treatment in the USA as it is required by law even if you don't have insurance. That is > not < true in many countries.
You should check out Eva zu Beck. She spent six months traveling through the western U.S.. Born in Poland and raised in England. She brings a lot of context as an European, traveling in the U.S..
It is against the law to be denied medical treatment for an emergency at an emergency room at a hospital. But it's probably a good idea to have insurance when you come to America because you never know what can happen but you will not be denied emergency medical care it's against the law
Each state has subsidized healthcare. Which makes it affordable. It’s a way to adjust towards your income. I was really poor and got really sick and the state covered it. It saved my life.
Different hospitals have different insurance policies, but if any hospital obtains funding from the government (all do), they are obligated to prepare emergency care. If a person has fear of loss of life they have to be assessed and cared for. But the charges will be outrageous and you'll receive a lot of bills.
There are state funded hospitals that have to take you after a for profit hospital has stabilized you.
You are fun to watch, thank you for making me smile today. Blessings from South Carolina USA
9:26 texan here! cool fact about portugal, you guys produce most of the world's cork! I don't know how common knowledge that is, but it was something i knew about portugal!
Portugal is a country I have always wanted to visit. I remember having a travel book about Portugal when I was in high school. So yes, Portugal is a place that interests people! you do not have to be France or Italy to be interesting . The architecture, historic sites, castles!....my God. Hopefully my husband and I will have an opportunity to see it in person.
The American health care system is BROKEN. Get the insurance.
💯% correct
Why, so they can deny 32% of our claims, to either minor or major needs after you've paid for the insurance? Sorry. I let the bill go to a creditor, then I pay a reduced (more fair bill). I don't give 2 shts about my credit. I'm never going to be able to buy a house anyway so what does it matter? The Insurance scams are out of control and need to be fixed
Insurance hardly ever covers care that occurred before you obtained it. It does cover "pre-existing" conditions, but not the treatment for them that occurred before you were insured.
In other words, insurance will never ever cover an accident retroactively.
I lived in Germany for over 20 years and everyone thought you'd be left to die in front of the hospital without insurance (they didn't believe me when I said it wasn't true). Yes, you should have insurance even when traveling. Otherwise, it will be a huge headache. But especially for those with low income, there are some very supportive charities...some of which work directly with the hospital to make billing easier and seamless. For example, I've seen a finger-surgery drop from $14,000 to $720. One thing I learned while in Europe (well, in Germany) is that Americans are very, very, very charitable in comparison.
1. I work in Healthcare Billing, here's what I can say:
travel insurance is quite literally a gamble, if you get it you're placing a bet against your own health, if you win they pay your hospital bill, if you lose you are just gave them whatever the fee was.
if you don't get it you're betting you won't get sick. if you win, you pay nothing, if you lose you pay a potentially huge hospital bill.
most hospitals have a program to waive bills for people who can't afford to pay them, additionally, states provide medical coverage to their poorer citizens through Medicaid, which typically (depends on the state) does not leave any patient responsibility. in addition, some states and/or hospitals provide a discount to patients without health insurance, but, you still usually end up paying drastically more than you would with insurance.
2. I could point to Portugal on a map and tell you that Ferdinand Magellan was Portuguese. anything else I know I literally looked up now because I realized I knew very little about Portugal.
My last time in the hospital was more than $10,000 per day. Get temporary health insurance before you come here.
I haven't met many people from Portugal, but I've heard a LOT of Portuguese here. Have you conversed with many Brazilians in Portuguese? I'm told the difference in language is greater than the difference between European and South American Spanish.
We have a pretty strong Brazilian Jiujitsu community in Texas and many schools have one or more Brazilian instructors who've moved to the US permanently, or who come to teach for months at a time. Similarly, we have students who travel to Brazil to train for extended periods.
In fact, one of my friends trained down there for nearly 4 years. His mother is a native Spanish speaker so he grew up speaking it and could easily communicate with most Brazilians while he was down there. By the time he came back though, he was fluent in Portuguese, too!
Also, yes my uncle was a cowboy on a ranch down here for many years.
5!
Wyoming is wonderful but I truly love, big sky country, Montana. Whitefish up by the Canadian border. Huge grizzly 🐻 bears there! 🤓
Maine has the equivalent to cowboys. We just work on the ocean
Howdy from Texas.
Fun fact. Some of the very first cowboys in Montana and Wyoming were Texans. It was Texas cattlemen who were among the very first to drive their herds up north into those territories. Particularly herds of Texas Longhorn cattle. The very first millionaire Cattle Barons in those territories were Texans.
Which is not all that surprising since the original boundaries of the Republic of Texas, before it became a state stretched all the way up onto Southern Wyoming.
There are many cowboys in Wyoming, Montana...so, yes, there's of cowboys all over America!
YES, there's a difference btw cowboys, rednecks, hillbillies, and whatever Virginians are calling themselves now. There is overlap but also distinguishing cultural traditions. I wish y'all would STOP TELLING PEOPLE we are not that uneducated. Allowing other countries to greatly underestimate us is our super power. Lawful hearts sake alive! hope none of them pop into any random church house: SNAKE HANDLERS WHO DRINK RAT POISON! Only wish I was kidding but I'm not.
I recommend getting insurance because our out of pocket costs are ridiculous. Don’t know much about travel health insurance, if it only covers percentages like ours, but if you don’t have a life threatening emergency go to an urgent care clinic, NOT the hospital ER. Urgent care will treat specifically what’s wrong with you and send you on your way, not scam you with unnecessary tests.
Also, when people talk about poverty in America they don’t realize the statistics are talking about relative poverty, not abject poverty. Abject and relative poverty are not the same thing.
…and explain that to the American who is explaining why there won’t be any Christmas presents this year because there’s no work and we’re just trying to “keep the lights on” right now.
Correct. Even us Americans in poverty can still afford cheeseburgers and to pay the bills and have a decent life with govt assistance if needed. This is not comparable to actual POOR countries in REAL poverty
You can get emergency care without insurance. You just get a bill for $1,500 minimum
Oh wow. Ok. Doing insurance then 😂
And with no insurance, they'll have the bare minimum done.
@@robinmears55not true, that’s illegal and they’ll loose Medicare funding.
@@european-reacts What unifies every American is our lack of unity. Cowboys who both ride horses and pick ups,, rednecks, hillbillies, country may have a few overlaps but have distinguishing features. STAY SAFE. ALL FOR 1, 1 FOR ALL AND 3 FOR 5
You absolutely can get emergency care without insurance. And if after your care you tell them you have no insurance and fill out some paperwork your bill will be a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand. Hospitals would lose their Medicare funding if they refused help to anyone in danger.
Nice car? Yeah, it’s nice. It is also 27 years old. And I live in a teeny apartment. Welcome to California.
It is against the law for a health care facility to refuse emergency medical care.
Andre, get the medical insurance to be safe. It will reduce your hospital costs. Beware of large ambulance bills even with insurance. The ambulance company charged for transporting my wife to a local hospital with a broken foot more than $10,000. This is really true and shocked me. Fortunately my insurance negotiated the bill down and insurance covered it.
You don't need insurance to get treated. You NEED it to avoid the huge costs. In 2008, I went to the hospital in North Carolina for atrial fibrillation. Spent 18 hours in the hospital, got electro cardioverted (shocked by paddles), and eventually discharged. I didn't have insurance at the time. Total costs were about $18000. The Hospital bill was the largest and we were able to negotiate with them for a minimal payment (still was $6000). Pharmacy, ambulance, labs, etc., all charged me separately. I sent everyone letters with enclosed checks and dictated to them how I would pay them off, including time and amounts. I settled all bills, with no issues, over the following 10 months. However this is not sustainable, especially if you are sickly.
There are agencies that can help people with their health care coverage.
A public hospital must treat you, but you will be billed. A private hospital can refuse you for not having insurance. While very expensive, it would be best to get the travel insurance in case the closest hospital is private and time is essential.
Yeah, especially since he is planning on traveling with family.

Another thing I can say is to try to use an urgent care clinic instead of an emergency room if you can.
If you show up to the emergency room they have to treat you, but you will get a bill of course. Why should I pay for you? Nothing is free in this world someone always pays
One of the first things my Dad taught me in the 1960s : There is no such thing as a free lunch.
@ hospitals openly admit they charge the rest of us more to compensate for the people who don’t pay the bill
Since you will be with family, yes I would buy Travelers Insurance. Child could get sick, you could break a bone, need stitches, etc. I also want to mention that you will also have to pay for insurance on any vehicle you rent. Another thing I thought of was to make sure that the vehicle contract includes a service called ¨Tripple A¨ ¨AAA¨. It´s a roadside service that is covered if you have a flat tire, overheated radiator, broken fan belt, crap like that. They are all across the USA. They will rescue you and fix your vehicle. I had to call them ONE time in my entire life when on vacation because I had locked my keys in my car. It was worth it. We were steaming hot in a parking lot with kids at the beach.
fyi It's not just AAA anymore. A lot of insurance companies include the towing/fixing. Geico now has it. To be honest, I have no idea what the insurance riders say on rentals as I use my Geico insurance and deny the rental car's insurance.
@@WendyLobello I have never rented a vehicle so wasn´t sure what companies or inclusions were available.
I was a cowboy back when i was a kid. Had the hat, boots, and six shooters...no horse though.
In America public hospitals are by law required to provide medical treatment for anyone. They will send you a bill, but they write off the bill if you can’t pay.
After destroying your credit…. They might write off the bill… if you can’t pay it.
no hospital can deny you service due to inability to pay. little known fact. if you have an emergency the hospital legally HAS to treat you whether you can pay or have insurance or whatever.
IF you do have to go to hospital for anything, as a foreigner or a local, request an itemized bill and it will magically reduce to a more reasonable number. as a foreigner, it will be like 100% harder for the hospitals collection department to actually bill you once you've left the USA
Hospital must treat you. In Orlando there are 2 hospital systems with locations that are around. Both take insurance and have charity care. They also take international insurance because we do have international patients that are from everywhere. We just got a Palestinian burn victim last night too. We also have been taking care of a lightning strike victim for six months whose brain was scrambled. I am not kidding as she is still in a coma. She was just transferred to a different hospital about a week ago not because of hospital policy but because she had a room waiting for her and her family is from out of state so it’s not unusual for a transfer like that. We just moved her to a hospital that is closer to home which could take care of her much better than we could.
All emergency patients are treated. The financial issues happen later. If you come, get the insurance.. because it can be hundreds of thousands if for example, you get in a bad accident. But.. there are lots of american folks who don't have anything.. like young adults, or just poor folks.. that is almost always written off to charity. My daughter, for example, has nothing.. she is under the state insurance for poor folks.. and even that can usually be got after a hospital visit. The social worker will visit you in the hospital and start the process before you leave the hospital.
This is an exaggeration
One fact I learned about Portugal in history class is the oldest treaty still in effect is between Portugal and England. I believe it was signed in the 1300s. So older Americans were taught about the world, but now days diversity training over shadows some of the basics.
Health systems work like this: In regular clinics and urgent care, you will be expected to pay your bill either before treatment or right after. In some cases you can set up payment plans. In emergency clinics you will not pay at all. The will immediately treat you, and as part of the documenting process - depending on your health - they will get your insurance information. When all of your emergency and hospital bills are done, they will either bill your insurance or you. They will offer you alternative options to help with your bill if you don't have insurance, as well. You generally need insurance before the incident to have it pay for you, but there's some exceptions. Even if they know you will never pay them, they don't care. It is illegal for them to refuse care for you. Medical bills are often forgiven after a while, because they expect most people to not be able to pay (and overcharge people who do). So it's a pain for non-emergency care, but for emergency care you can just ignore your bills to no ill effect.
Not a lot of Americans are rich. A few Americans have a majority of the wealth.
Woke BS
Yeah right, gotta be woke if you think just a few own most of the wealth. Phft.
@ why would I lie about something so easily verifiable? And my comment wasn’t meant as a political statement as much as it was to say that while we are a wealthy country, the distribution makes it so that most Americans aren’t rich. Just confirming that it was a lie non Americans might have heard.
Andre!
If you visit America here are places I recommend:
If you want a nice beach place to visit, I say Florida. It has great waves, a nice climate and unlike the West coast of the US, it actually has sea shells.
If you want a truly exotic experience in the US, then visit New Orleans, during the Mardi Gras festival which is always held the day before Lent.
If you enjoy hiking in a beautiful scenery then Colorado is the place to be during the summer.
The problem with US medical system is because it is now a for profit business. If it were a non-profit it would be much cheaper. Corporate greed and excessive bureaucracy have made health cae unaffordable for many.
Estimates of the number of cowboys in the United States vary, with the Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimating there are up to 1 million, while the Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) estimates there are closer to 600,000. The USDA also estimates that about one-third of cowboys are women.
Cowboys can be found in many different types of jobs, including homesteads, traveling from ranch to ranch, and the Crow Reservation in Montana. Montana still has cowboys and cowgirls who lead cattle drives each fall.
Cowboy culture has roots in many different cultures from all over the world. Many who joined the cattle drives of the late 19th century were of African, Mexican, and Indigenous descent.
Bandera, Texas is known as the "Cowboy Capital of the World" and offers visitors a taste of the Old West.
André
Bandera Texas is about a one hour drive / 80 km (in your rental pickup truck) northwest of San Antonio.
There are charitable organizations that can help with medical bills for the poor.
Hospitals have access to funding either private or government back that helps pay for people that can't afford insurance or are homeless that is not part of the ACA. If you are visiting America you need to get travelers ins health plan and you will be covered but still have to pay some.
Yes, the taxpayers of the city county or state pick up the tab for the uninsured. It's a big problem for us near the Southern border. None of the undocumented (illegal) immigrates have insurance and many require medical assistance. Our little county is on the hook for $40-45m dollars every year to keep the hospitals operational.
The stereotype of US residents not knowing geography well, is about geography outside the US. Not within. And it is true. Most do not travel outside of the USA.
If you get hurt or feel sick in America just go to any hospital's Emergency Room (ER) - they will take good care of you. They have assistant programs for people who cannot pay - so don't worry.
Part of the reason Ambulance services are expensive is that in the past, people would call them as glorified taxis and make it difficult to discern whether a call was legitimately an emergency or not. It’s not an excuse for *how* expensive it is now, but that’s one part of why they did that: to deter false alarms.
I paid $28,000 for an ambulance ride, how does this equate?
thats complete bs not true at all
@@ScribbleScrabblessnah that’s a lie prove it
when coming to america always make sure you have extra money set aside for medical stuff cuz you never know what might happen and insurance is nice to have so you dont get a HUGE bill which could be a issue if u cant afford to pay.
As a general rule, cowboys are west of the Mississippi River going all the way to the Rocky Mountain Range. East of the Mississippi is usually show horse or pleasure horse. Cowboys are on the big ranches ¨Out West¨.
It is against the law to deny emergency health care just because you don't have insurance. Granted, it will cost you an arm and a leg.
Eastern Massachusetts is heavily Portuguese speakers. Brazilians, Cape Vedians, Canary Islands, Azores...maybe even Portugal
Definitely get insurance. Medical costs in this country are terrible. The advent of the HMO is what really started the unending escalation of rising costs, and then the Affordable Care Act just added an entire new problem. I am American and I don't even bother going to the doctor anymore unless it is just a routine check up, because out of pocket expenses are ridiculously expensive, even with insurance. Traveling insurance for visitors is definitely something I'd recommend just in case.
All i know about Portugal is its a surfer paradise and they have the second largest bridge in Europe
Yeah…you don’t need it for emergency care but when that bill comes, you’ll wish you had! I was life flighted once last year and still paying it off😮!!!
Americans know little about Portugal because you’re a quiet country that rarely makes headlines. And that’s a good thing.
Here is a crazy fact about Portugal! It is one of the most sought after spots for Big Wave Surfing!
Yes, even though expensive. Make sure you get insurance when visiting the US. Also make sure you get transportation in case you need to be medically transported back to Portugal 🇵🇹.
Perhaps this will make things clearer for you concerning health care in the U.S., especially in light of recent events.
"Many patients take their first look at a hospital bill, only to go into sticker shock. A single aspirin for $25? Newborn diapers for $100? Why is it that products we purchase for pennies at the local drug store end up costing so much more in the hospital?
The culprit behind these high costs is our reimbursement structure.
Public programs do not fully pay for the cost of care. The latest figures estimate that hospitals lose $35 billion a year on Medicare, Medicaid and other forms of government reimbursement. For specific procedures, the picture can be even bleaker.
Take note, because this money isn’t lost - you pay the difference. Unable to absorb these losses, the bill gets passed to commercial insurers and employers that purchase health plans for their employees. Hence the itemized charges of $25 for an aspirin or $100 for diapers that are paid by insurers today, and by you and me tomorrow in the form of higher premiums and co-pays. And it’s only going to get worse as our population ages and more of us call Medicare our insurance provider." - "Why an aspirin taken in a hospital can cost upwards of $25"
Mike Alkire
Regarding medical insurance in the States, free medical insurance and care are available to folks via a program called Medicaid if they live at or below the poverty line. For a single adult that 2024 yearly income line is at $15,000 or less. Medicaid also provides for impoverished families and the disabled with a dedicated focus on children's needs. It's up to each state, however, should they decide to follow this national guideline. Currently ten states do not adhere to the guideline, and offer their citizens less coverage; most of these states are in the South.
Check if your regular medical insurance includes out of country benefits. If it doesn't, get travel insurance with medical benefits. This should be the cheapest option for a short-term visit. Travel insurance includes lost luggage and other benefits in addition to medical coverage. San Jose, CA has the Five Wounds Portuguese National Parish.
Andre, your kitchen looks like an "upper middle class" American kitchen. The houses that people show off on RUclips don't include the millions of wrecks some people live in because they can't afford better.
Portuguese influence in New England is big! Specifically in Providence, Rhode Island! Delicious bread!
Get the travel insurance for your holiday. Seriously medical bills are HUGE in the US. I had a major problem with back spasms a few months ago between the cost of the ambulance and the treatment in the emergency room I wracked up a good $15,000 bill which thankfully my insurance covered most of.
Depending on how long you are staying you can get insurance to cover the typical 90 day visit for less than $150 with a max of $250,000 for one person
Dont buy insurance here. If you have to go to the hospital, they just give you a bill. If you have some travel insurance that will cover it, good. If not, you just have to pay out of pocket, which is considerably cheaper than what they'll charge insurance.
Glad to be amongst the first to comment for once. So if you're homeless you still get access to care without insurance and matter fact if you don't have insurance they have hospitals that are free, in miami fl they have jackson regional hospital and if you're in an accident or life threatening situation you get driven or airlifted there and if you have no insurance you get free treatment most times. Cheers my friend.
Huge stereotype about more cowboys in the south than the north. Most cattle ranches are from Oklahoma to Montana and perhaps some in Texas. Horse farms are in Kentucky, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. There is also farmland in Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, New Jersey, California there are farmlands and vineyards. Blueberries are from Maine, potato farms in Idaho. New York has apple orchards, Georgia peaches, Florida oranges. Not they are all Cowboys but they are farmers. Corn, soybean, eggplant, squash, tomatoes, wheat, tobacco. We grow so many things. Texas has cattle, Pennsylvania chickens. It goes on and on.
you should definitely get the health insurance for your family while you're here in the states but yes if you go to the emergency room you'll still get treated....we get taught geography & world history as well as our own geography & history....there's a big enough Portuguese community over here that it won't be a problem for you....there's a bigger percentage of poor people than rich people especially nowadays....most people are in credit card debt....André there's alot of cowboys in the north & the south & all over the states even in New York & California & Florida & Hawaii
The problem in America is they give everyone credit to buy stuff they can’t afford. For example they give a person a 5-10 year lian to buy a car that costs $70,000 but by the time they pay it off ,if they actually do, it will cost them 200,000 after they pay all the interest on it.
If you do not have health insurance in the US, you cannot be denied emergency care. You might get a bill, but there are many charity orgs that will pick up the bill and the hospital will sometimes write if off for their taxes. If you are generally healthy and just coming as a tourist, you can probably do fine. But if you are bringing wife and kid, I would get some form of insurance just in case.
Health providers are required by law to treat persons requiring emergency care
