It is even more difficult when you are dealing with two toasters and three singers. Five Man Army is one of the great Dillinger’s most ambitious projects to date. Spanning artists from two generations (measured by activity timeline) Five Man Army features Dillinger and his great friend Trinity (two first generation roots toasters) as well as second generation singers: Al Campbell, Wayne Wade and Junior Tamlin. The challenge was on two different levels. First level is deciphering and transcribing. Second level is attributing. The toasters Dillinger and Trinity sound almost alike. Thanks bredrins for the commendations. @Lawrence Njawe. Assuredly U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone and Big Youth were the pioneers. But I deliberately lump Dillinger, Trinity and Jah Stitch as the junior members of that first generation, with I-Roy somewhere in between those two groups, because of their stylistic similarities. By 1975 Dillinger was already very big. Don't forget too that those pioneers were initially sound system deejays for a large part of their early careers as was I-Roy. “Murder man.“ “Whaat?” “Brother won’t give me a five?” “What you mean?” “Give me a five on the black hand side?” “Alright. Go. Five-man army. Go there.” “Woooe wahoo oh ho, Woooe wahoo oh ho.” “Way hey.” “You See. Jah is the Light of this World. Yeah, Jah is I Light for I Salvation and I and I protector, who shall I fear in a Babylon as I would tell you. Seeing say the Dread is not an unruly one. Said the Natty Dread is a Christian. All man those that deal with war be an iniquity is a fitting in the city, set a fire burn pon themselves, set a fire pon the city, so me, so me set a fire with the city. You see.” “Woooe wahoo oh ho.” “Have mercy Looord.” < Trinity:> “But the Lord God Jah Rastafari, have mercy on those that have mercy on themselves as I would tell you. The Lord God Jah Rastafari say on the last day no mercy for the merciless, Oh God bless the less.” “And God created the world in seven days then rested on the sabbath day. But which day is the sabbath day? Some of dem a talk ‘bout the Seventh-day Adventist, but to me dem look like apprentice. Some of dem are talk ‘bout _ _ _ _gibberish_ _ _ _come to play a funny trick” “Go There.” “In my Father’s house there are many mansions. Yeah. So little children come on in. Hmmm. You can’t do bad and get goood. So you got to do good if you want to live right. Yeah eh he.” “Woooe wahoo oh ho. “ “O ho. The gates of Zion are open for anyone to come in. You can’t live in a Babylon, you might be living in sin. Rock on coming in a Zion, rock on come in my friend. You can’t be living in a Babylon and be my good friend. No way Sir. Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.” “So I call on you Oh Jah to take…” “Yeah Papa Brown,” “Ites Godson” “The man who give thanks and praise unto Jah.” “Are you mean, every second, every minute, every hour on the hour.” “Jah!” “Rastafari!!” “Yeah. Jah King of Kings, and Jah Lord of Lords, the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, I-lect of God, ever-living God, Earth rightful ruler” “Jay”, “Earth rightful ruler “ “Jay. “ “So, what is to be must be. So, what is to be must be. But Jah said unto Jonah. Go down into the village and tell those people of the destruction that is to come I would say. And Jonah didn’t obey. And Jonah was swallowed by a whale I would tell you. And Jah punished Jonah I would say. Yeah. Tell you that great stone have to move” “True.” Tell you that great stone have to move” “True.” “Great stone have to move” “True.” “Tell you that great stone have to move.” ”Jah!” “King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah” “Rastafari!” “I-lect of God, ever-living God, earth rightful ruler. Earth rightful ruler.” “True.” ”Jah!” “Rastafari!!” “Ever-living, ever faithful, ever sure, once more.” ”Jah!” ”Rastafari!!” “Without any apology I would say.” ”Jah!, Jah! Jah!” “Jah ever-living, ever-faithful, ever-sure I would tell you, and so we got to really walk, and then we got to really talk, and we got to really chant and we got to sing about that. Jah! Jah! is the King of Kings and Jah! Jah! is the Lord of Lords and Jah! Jah! is the Conquering Lion and Jah! Jah! is of the Tribe of Judah. And who don’t know it have to know it by now or he’s ain’t gonna get around to know it because there will be no next time around I will tell you” “Do It” “Jah!” ”and I will tell you that” “Rastafari!!” ”Jah Jah is the King of Kings, Jah Jah is the Lord of Lords.” “Jay” “Without any apology, I say it once and I say it twice. And if I feel like say it again I will say it thrice as I would tell you ‘bout the song that you like it on the chart for the very last time. Alright….. And Jah do it thy work thyself.” “Jah!”. “And when Jah come to judge,” “Rastafari!” ”Jah don’t partial. Jah judge down onto the judge that judge it. Jah judge onto judge that judge it. So will Jah do it. Jah do thy work thyself. Jah Jah do thy work thyself. Yeah. And you can have the whole world but give unto I Jah. You can have the whole wide world. You can have the whole wide world but give me Jah Jah. You can have the whole wide world but give me Jah Jah. Truth by Jah is all I really need? And I really need it I would say. You can really have the whole wide world. Really have the whole wide world. But Jah loveth thy son. And Jah loveth thy daughters. And Jah loveth thy fathers and thy mothers and thy sisters and thy brothers and all thy family. And Jah give it out unto himself as sacrifice. So give thanks and praise unto Jah.” “Jay.” “So, give thanks and praise unto Jah.” “Jah!” “Rastafari!!” “Really work and chant Jah Jah name. You got to work and chant Jah Jah name. You got to work and chant Jah Jah name. Chant Jah Jah name and don’t feel ashamed. Cause you got no one to blame,” “Jay” “when you call upon Jah name. Come make we call upon Jah name. Come make we call upon Jah. Jah Rastafari!” ”Selassie I (Sela Say I) All aba hai”. Tell you that great stone have to move. Tell you that great stone have to move. Whether by a chapter even by a call, whether by a chapter even by a call that great stone have to move. It really have to move.” ”Jah!” “Rastafari!!”
A brief Interlude is followed by the Dub Version.
The root toasters art. This is by far the most difficult roots lyrics transcription project I have undertaken to date. Toasters rap very fast and they are difficult to keep up with. The singers Al Campbell and Wayne Wade also sound almost alike. Junior Tamlin’s voice lies somewhere in between, sometimes high other times low and raspy. Attribution was quite difficult. You must have a keen ear. Note: I do not own the rights to these lyrics and any errors of transcription are entirely mine. As an aside I suspect that Dillinger (b. Lester Bullock) was really the producer of this great work and that “Lewin Bones Lock” of who there is very little trace in roots annals, is merely his alias for trying out his hands at musical production. Great piece of art. A classic by any measure. - Chu Konwea
Excuse my Scottish pedantry but Seventh-day Adventist should have capital letters because it is the title of a Church of the Synagogue of Satan.
Bless Chu. A nice little work of transcription. Here is our attempt at the lyrics of a English artist named Lady Lex:
