    The Golden Rule doesn't mean "give people gifts you want yourself, regardless of their desires". It means treat people the way you would want to be treated IN THAT CIRCUMSTANCE.
    Your parents weren't following the Golden Rule because they both wanted their preferences taken into account, but didn't take the other person's preferences into account.
    The problem with the Platinum Rule (treat other people the way they want to be treated) is that it leaves you open to be exploited. For instance, your partner may want to look through your phone every day, but you aren't a bad person for having boundaries.
    If someone from another country moves next door and wishes you would dress more modestly and not express love for your same-day partner in front of them, because they find it offensive, you're not a bad person for not appeasing them.
    That's why the Golden Rule always works, and the Platinum Rule is shallow.

    Well said! I myself hate wearing a mask (it fogs up my glasses) but as much as I hate it I wear it for those people who may get sick and possibly die because they have underlying issues. But I also don’t judge someone who doesn’t wear one because you never know what underlying issue they may have. Treating someone with respect and compassion doesn’t mean we agree with everything they do but we are meant to “love the sinner and not the sin”.

    • @rvdb7363
      @rvdb7363 4 года назад +8

      I agree, sometimes you just have to endure some annoyances because it's kind and loving toward others.
      On a purely practical note: try placing your mask closer to your eyes and place your glasses on top of it. That did the trick for me. Works especially well with those cloth masks you can wash and reuse. It definitely made me a lot less annoyed with wearing them.
      Another tip is to put a little dish soap on your glasses and wipe them clean with a clean cloth. Haven't tried that one myself, but my sister says it works well.

    Melinda Selmys, when she wrote her book "Sexual Authenticity: More Reflections" I think it was, referred to two events in the life of Christ: first the woman at the well, and second the woman caught in adultery. To make a long story short Jesus begins by treating them as people He cares about and wants to save from death - the Samaritan woman by talking with her when no one else would, the woman in John 8 by refusing to kill her for her sins. He does end by saying "God and sin no more" (and "you have had five husbands and the one you are with now isn't") but not until he's made it clear He is interested in their well-being - and that He is God.
    Christ shows us to lead with showing an interest in the lives of others. Cultivate friendship by learning about others and encouraging them in the good.

    As a very proud Gay Catholic who has suffered the judgement and condemnation of some of my sisters and brothers in Christ , both in The Church and the wider Christian community, it is great to hear a Priest say that we should treat all Gods Children with dignity, respect , love and charity (Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est),
    I firmly believe that all that truly should matter to us is" that God has loved us into existence, is loving us into existence and will continue to love us into existence" (James Allerton , Author and theologian ) so let us faithfully obey The command of The Lord "To love one another as I have loved you" , by seeing The Christ in all people and reflection Christ to our broken world.

      @@BreakingInTheHabit for me personally, the sort of commentors creator draw to their content says just as much as the content itself. My 'relationship' with you is parasocial. I know this is a ministry for you but it works the same way as any RUclips channel of your size. You seem like a genuinely good person but as this is the internet and you are building a brand whether you're making money or not, that brand is occasionally built on the people in your comments section. After all, comments help the algorithm and help channels grow. So I like to keep an eye on what's indirectly helping channels and online communities grow. It's the same thing for every channel I interact with, not just yours. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if the comments are toxic, I personally feel that the creator is indirectly growing from that toxicity.

    Thanks Fr Casey for another enriching video. I feel renewed as a Catholic listening to this piece and learning that it's Christ-like to respect our fellow LGBT brothers and sisters. I say this because I have many intolerant friends who are rad trads as many would call them, thinking that LGBT is a lifestyle that people choose. If it is a lifestyle choice, why would people in more oppressive countries choose a more difficult lifestyle choice that could get them stoned to death? Why would people choose a lifestyle that could disadvantage them in job applications, social events, etc? This unfortunately tends to come from the traditional latin mass parishioners who are quick to judge and have no love for others but their myopic views on the world. It's also worrying to read comments posted in videos of people like right wing rad trad like taylor marshall who support neo nazis (alex tschugguel), right wing extremists (jack posobiec), and racists like trump (need i say more about this one). Keep up the good work Fr, God bless you!

I don't think we "deserve" anything, and perhaps I didn't express myself correctly in my post. It's hard for me to word my thoughts... What I think is that compassion is not telling people what they want to hear or always giving in to their ideas/wants/behaviors/etc; it doesn't mean that everytime you encounter yourself in a situation similar to the examples you gave, you are going to lecture people or go against them, no. However, because we know that our faith is the truth, we should make it known to others, by example and word, to the extent that the circumstances allow us and why not? also expect their understanding, respect and compassion in return, not because of pride, but because we believe that all people are capable of humbly respecting others. To me, it would seem that doing to others what you would have them to do you would be like being in their shoes, not a blind, "well, I like toy trucks so I'll get my mom a toy truck!" but a, "hm, if I were my mom, what would I want my child to do?"
    So, for instance, if someone wants to be called something that isn't true, like a priest when he's not actually ordained, or a woman when they are a man, would you want what you may mistakenly believe to be true to be flattered, or ultimately would you want to be corrected and obtain truth (and, possibly, eternal salvation!)? Obviously, we probably shouldn't just be a jerk, but we cannot just flatter others' deceptions. If you're being deceived, then someone just coming up and saying, "You're being deceived!" might not really help. But we have to try to not be based in human respect, but work for the glory of God. This is so much easier to say than do, but Jesus knows our intentions. But often the flesh makes our inclinations go outta wack, which can be aided by help with God (including mortification, but we must be careful with this, and it is best to do with a spiritual director so you do not go overboard or with bad inclinations). But we have to try to work for Truth.
    Jesus would seem to show this when He, in His Infinite Wisdom, denounced the pharisees' deception; they were putting on a show as if they were righteous. But they were like whitewashed tombs.

    Brother Casey! Love your videos, and watch them all the time. Great homily! Please know, however, that I wouldn't know anything about the Real Presence of Jesus in Eucharist if I hadn't visited an Episcopalian service on a very fateful day in my youth (about 1983 or so). I entered that service believing that Eucharist is idolatry (I was a Protestant who was taught some pretty hateful Protestant anti-Catholic dogma). Before that day, I thought Communion was really just a symbol. (We know what Flannery O'Connor said about that!) I knelt there as a Protestant and stood up a catholic (with a little "c"). I experienced Jesus in the bread and wine there, and started to love Roman Catholics there, too. I tasted *salty, thick blood* in the chalice; God gave me a sign and a wonder to tell me that Catholics are my brothers and sisters. Before that moment, I would have thought you are not a true Christian! I do know you are a brother now. The Holy Spirit showed me that you are. In fact, I don't think there was a drop of wine in that chalice. It was HIS blood. After that experience, I read everything I could get my hands on about Holy Communion. Transubstantation, Consubstantiation, the Real Presence...all the labels we put on this Holy Sacrament in our futile effort to describe Him in that one, lovely expression of Grace. I read about similar miracles to the one I had experienced in both the Roman and Orthodox churches. I know the Anglican church broke off, but please forgive. The liturgy is exactly the same. The Apostolic succession, though fraught with conflict, remains unbroken. The Pope has expressed his desire to accept Anglicans into the Roman Catholic Communion. One of his very best friends, an Anglican Bishop (now passed away), so longed for unity.
    I hope the RCC will do that soon under his good leadership, despite insignificant differences.

    I wish I'd heard this lesson when I was younger, as since a lot of social subtleties escaped me so I tended to be kind of insensitive purely by accident. I didn't figure out some of this stuff until I was nearly 20. I wish they'd teach the "golden rule" like this instead of the blanket statement that kids tend to get instead.

    Father Casey, can you do a video some time explaining the extreme penances that many of the saints are known for? I've looked up information on them in the past trying to understand but I almost always come back more confused. On one hand they are offering themselves up as a sacrifice for others, on the other hand many of them (*cough* Padre Pio, Catherine of Sienna, John Vianney *cough*) seem to fall into the category of self-abuse. It gets even more confusing when you include stories of God allowing the devil to torture them in one way or another. Accepting suffering is one thing, but it almost seems like we are meant to seek out pain. How should Catholics understand these stories?

    • @CantusTropus
      @CantusTropus 4 года назад +5

      Now, I'm not expert in this, but I think part of the issue is that we moderns have a different idea of what counts as an "extreme" penance than these saints did. Certainly, many of the Saints practised, say, mortification to an extent that wouldn't be advisable for everyone, and it's definitely possible to go too far. One shouldn't, for instance, starve oneself to the point of harm - mortification is merely meant to show our devotion and curb our vices, not to harm us. But I suspect that, in many cases it may simply be that they practised penances that we would balk at, but which are not excessive (not sure about the particulars, you might find some excesses, but then again the saints are also still human).

    • @noahscheibmeir5842
      @noahscheibmeir5842 4 года назад

      Cantus Tropus that is true and thank you for responding. I’m still not sure how we should seek out suffering though. If Fasting is good then why not starving? Where is the line we should be watching out for when practicing penance? Is it a question of how much pain, humiliation, or inconvenience we can stand before losing our minds or is there some other goal we ought to keep our eyes on? If so, what is that goal and why is suffering the most perfect way of attaining it rather than some other way, to the point where God will allow not just natural sufferings to perfect his saints, but even supernatural ones, such as demonic attack? I realize those are unique situations that very few are called to experience, but I want to know what process is going on and why God chooses to bring it about in this manner. Again thank you for responding and have a blessed day.

      There’s a great podcast from Christopher West and Wendy on this.
      I don’t know it by heart. I suggest you look for it.
      I’ll leave here what I recall.
      1) grace builds on nature (you have to respect your nature to receive God’s grace)
      2) good spiritual director will tell you what is appropriate for your current place in your walk to Christ. Or what God might be asking you.
      We should not just go applying those penances literally. It could turn out worst and foster our pride, it could damage our relation to God and our faith. It could lead to a misunderstanding of the mistery of suffering. If we have a family, it could mislead them in the understanding of the faith. Or even people that know us.
      I know it’s little help because I couldn’t answer all your questions. Sorry! It was more as a practical insight.

      Maria Rocha thank you, I appreciate that. I’ll look up that podcast. I’ve heard about Grace building on nature, though I don’t really understand how it works. And your right about getting a good spiritual director. It seems like many of these saints had someone or other directing them. Can you imagine being someone like St. Teresa of Avila’s spiritual director? How under qualified they must have felt after they got to know her. Anyway, thank you again, and God bless you.

    The issue is
    1. Whilst we respect the right of some non Christians who mind the Merry Xmas greeting, is Christian's right violated ?
    2. What has been the societal norm in the Merry Xmas Greeting ? Is there a need to change anything just because of a vocal minority ? In my continent, where mutli religions exist, Christians are the minority and religious sensitivities are prevalent, we dont go overboard with the Merry Xmas greeting which effectively equates to Happy Holidays. When Christians greet non Christians with Merry Christmas, no one really mind. In fact some non Christians returned back the same Merry Christmas greeting.
    3. The change of Merry Xmas to Happy Holidays is an over correction that originates from the US. Europe has no such unnecessary frivolous change that divides people instead. Peoples of all faiths who in the past don't mind the greeting are suddenly imposed upon them the need to change to the Happy Holidays greeting instead.
    4. I am a Christian Catholic. When I greet a non Christian in his / her festive greetings it does not mean I am converting yo their faith. I am simply sharing their joy

    • @rvdb7363
      @rvdb7363 4 года назад

      Very good points! Indeed, are your rights really violated if someone says Happy Holidays? And I wholeheartedly agree with your fourth point. One of my best friends is Muslim and she wishes me merry Christmas and happy Easter, and I wish her Eid Mubarak. Like you said, we share in the joy. And sometimes in the pain, like this year when I couldn't celebrate Easter with my family and she couldn't celebrate Eid al-Fitr with hers.
      I think your third point is quite generalising. The European countries have quite different cultures. In my country, the Netherlands, "Fijne Feestdagen" (Happy Holidays) has been the normal greeting for as long as I can remember. While "Fijne Kerstdagen" (Merry Christmas) feels forced. We didn't even say that in the small town in the middle of the bible belt where I grew up. But your point might as well be true for the majority of the countries in Europe. And you are absolutely right that the USA has influenced Europe and not always for the better.

    • @jeremiahong248
      @jeremiahong248 4 года назад

      @@rvdb7363 Dank u wel ! Regarding point 3, many international multinational companies operate as Regional HQ in my country. Only the US companies require the local employees to send Happy Holidays greetings to customers and suppliers. Merry Xmas is forbidden. European and Asian MNCs don't force their employees. For years, there is no problem with sending Merry Christmas to everyone regardless of their faith until the 'political correctness' originating from the US over reacts resulting in rights restriction of Christians. There was a time when US companies still greet everyone Merry Xmas.
      I like to share that in the past, Christians were already sensitive enough not to greet Muslims or Hindus with Merry Xmas. But it is they who greet Christians Merry Xmas to extend their well wishes to Christians. We don't need US political correctness to mess up our cordial interfaith relationship.

    I tend to disagree with pretty much everything Casey has to say but, it is nice to be able to agree with him for once. I think it really comes down to respect for others. As he said, not adopting their beliefs, but respecting that they have alternate ones. It is sad that we have to remind ourselves of this but it is part of the human condition.
