Thankyou for posting this. Although I've made hundreds of settings similar to this I've never used the command 'wire cut' before. There are just so many commands in rhino that I've never used or know about.

Nice tutorial, thank you! For the origin, I just enter 0 followed by Enter.
Regarding the design of stone settings, I'm a n00b. I wonder: Why do you not make the chamfer match the stone, and why do you not put an undercut into the prongs?
My guess is that 3D printing is not precise enough, plus variances in the stones, and it's better to do that by hand when doing the setting. But I really have no idea.

Your guess is kind of correct - its all do do with the variables of materials and manufacturing techniques.

for some reason i do not have the surface line needed at 12:14.... i have multiple lines and can not select any to extend ?

Hi Brock. If you don’t have the surface edge in that location you can use the command ExtractIsocurve to get one. If it’s not going in the correct orientation, click “toggle” in the command line. Hope this helps.

This is a very good presentation. I am learning Rhino for jewellery and I tried your idea for a marquise stone. The pointed stone outline created a pointed under-bezel. Should I fillet the corners of the curve of the girdle outline before extruding it to make the under-bezel, or is there are way to round (soften) the ends of the extrusion? I ask becuase I have heard that sharp corners are a bad for casting. Not sure if I need to worry about it but thought you would know. Thank you for showing us how to do this!

Thanks for letting me know you liked the video, David . You could use the ‘fillet curve’ command to round the curve before you extrude or you can use the ‘fillet edge’ command. Though to be honest it should be fine as it is. With sharp edges and casting its usually long, sknife-edge areas left in negative space that cause issues, rather then sharp edges in positive space, if that makes sense. If you require any help with your rhino learning journey get in touch.

@@jtrdesign-practicalrhinoje9669 Thank you for the clarification and education regarding the sharp edges. Do you offer specific classes/lessons or is it one on one when there is a design issue I am struggling with?

@@DavidConger All classes are 1 one 1. I guess they’re more tutorials or bespoke lessons, rather that traditional classes. I tailor the lessons to your specific requirements, after an initial consultation. Then we arrange a date/time for the lesson and connect via Zoom. So if you have specific things you are struggling with I can help you with those or if there is a particular area or design you’d like to know more about, we can focus on that. Lessons can be a little at 1 hour or up to 6 hours. I find the optimum time for the student is short bursts of 1.5-2.0 hours. You can also record the lesson via zoom, so you have it to refer back to. If you’d like to discuss further I’m happy to have a chat over the phone or via email. Get in touch via email : jack@jackrow.com. You can check out my reviews here: facebook.com/jtrcad/reviews . Another thing to note is that my lessons also cover practical manufacturing, how to make realistic models for production, not just the CAD side of things, which I think is very important.

@@jackrow1332 This sounds great! I have been using MatrixGold for a while but I often wish I had developed a better understanding of Rhino. I recently ran into something as I tried to make cathedral style fitted wedding band with diamonds. MG doesn't have the tools for this, but I know that if I had better skills with Rhino, I wouldn't be stuck. I would like to discuss this further with you. ~ Dave

@@jackrow1332 i eventually got it. Basically it only wanted to cut 180° at a time so I had to do it twice to get the 360. But id create the intersecting line select it and hit wire cut then select the whole whole surface. Then cut and Basically nothing kept happening. I dont even know how I eventually got it to cut 180° at a time. But it didn't happen via the exact steps described, had to do something different. Sorry I can't be more descriptive its day one on this software for me.
