Practical Jewellery CAD Tutorial: Filling and smoothing gaps with 3D Coat
Thank you for this informative video. May I ask if how about the gold bar 24k is it possible to define the requirements?
I am having issues fixing the intersection. When I select and pull down the rail curve and pull it down, the only thing that moves is the black curve line, not the whole intersecting rail.
This is a fantastic tutorial - easy to follow and everything explained clearly - I've already used the skills I picked up here to design and fabricate my first engagement ring (couldn't have done it without you, Jack!) I do have a question about the network surface function: why is it that in the video the A and C points run down along the shank, whereas when I do it it frequently cuts straight down along the side profile of the ring? It creates a seam that won't allow me to use loft to create the internal surface. I can duplicate and join the edge, but the seemingly arbitrary nature of where it puts points A and C is really bothering me... 😅
Hi Yiannai. Feel free to send over your file and I’ll take a look for you. jack@jackrow.com . Glad you liked the video and it helped you complete your first engagement ring👍🏻
What % allowance do you recommend for Mould/Master? Thank you for the video!
Depends if you’re direct casting from a print first or directly moulding a print. As a very general rule; Silicone/cold mould 2% and vulcanised/hot 4% . Note there are many variables that can affect this including mass of the item and type of rubber used. Hope this helps.
Your videos are so helpful to me. Will you be making more soon? 🙏
I’m so busy with online teaching and consulting work at the moment that I barely get the time to make a content. Hopefully next year(2025) I’ll be able to get few more added. If you’re interested in some online tuition with me, drop me an email: jack@jackrow.com
When I make any jewellery design its weight decrease is unreal. Example - A customer need a 2.5gm ring, and i make it 3gm on matrix9 but after casting its stand for 2.1gm ( Remember no finishing only casting weight) Please help me I need urgent solution 🙏🙏
Are your casting geometrically accurate to the models in rhino?
@jtrdesign-practicalrhinoje9669 no
Very helpful
Glad you think so!
@ are you going to be make any new videos?
Hi there - When I did the edge analysis at the end, somehow I have 12 naked edges? Anyone how know to fix this?
Hi Ashley. Could be lots of reasons so little hard to diagnose. Would you like to send me the file and I’ll take a look for you? Email to jack@jackrow.com
It's weird because I get a must lighter weight on the finished pieces than what was calculated. For ex, a piece that showed a volume of 310.8 mm3 (so 4.22g in 14k according to the calculator) ends up weighing just 3.4g once cast and polished. I understand polishing will take away some gold, but surely not that much..
Weights generated from the sheet are approximate and estimated. Depending upon the size and quality of the casts, the amount of metal removed can vary . Did you weigh the raw cast? Alloys are also not identical so weight can vary here too between metals.
@@jtrdesign-practicalrhinoje9669No I only send the 3d model and receive the finished piece. The casting workshop is only charging me for 3.4g, so I don't see how it would make sense for them to skimp on the amount of gold in their casting grain.
Thanks a lot mate! Appreciate :)
Glad it helped!
Hello teacher, thank you for this video. I have a query, there are times that it allows me to make the duplicate edge and other times it doesn't, the curves appear as joined, and that doesn't allow me to make the loft on the inside face above. I hope it is understood. Thanks for everything
Feel free to get in touch and send me your file. jack@jackrow.com
thanks for this!
No problem!
Brilliant, thank you so much for this!
You're very welcome!
Truly, your tutorials are fantastic. Easy to follow and understand. Please upload more, would so appreciate it. 😊
Thank you, I will
A fantastic tutorial…appreciate it very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Super super helpful and informative! I found that an easier way to finish is to cap the entire thing after NetworkSrf, making it a solid surface, and then boolean out the middle of the ring. Duplicate the bottom 2 edges of the top half of the shank, and then just sweep1 along the inner ring rail. Gets rid of the lofting steps. :)
Great to hear!
Thank you so much! Great method and super pleasant presentation!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, your teaching method is gold 😊 every single step and explanation left me feeling like I could actually do this. Other tutorials and even my real life certified teacher left me feeling dumb and discouraged and hating CAD projects.
Glad my way works for you
Hi Jack and students. I am looking into paying for some lessons using Rhino, for jewelry design. I am looking at other instructors as well. My experience is as a CAD modeler for the Plastic Injection Mold industry. I have been using Cadkey for about 30 years. I have an opportunity to get out of the mold business and into the jewelry design business. Jack, please tell me why you are the guy for me. I do like the way that you tend to not just rely on visuals only. I like to know the angles that I am rotating, not just always free-floating things. Should I lighten up on this visual thing?
Hi Scott. Happy to have a chat and see if I can help your shift in professional practice. I've worked a bit in industrial design so probably understand where you're coming from a little. The hardest thing you'll probably find is not necessarily the CAD side of things, given your previous experience, but Jewellery manufacturing techniques, processes and tolerances. Drop me an email to jack@jackrow.com and we'll arrange a time to have an informal chat.
hey man, great tutorial! I just seem to have a hard time doing a boolean ( not just with this exercise tho) is there any chance you can help me with it? thanks.
Hey Riarari. Happy to help if I can. Send me your file - jack@jackrow.com
So usefull! Thanks a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice tutorial, thank you! For the origin, I just enter 0 followed by Enter. Regarding the design of stone settings, I'm a n00b. I wonder: Why do you not make the chamfer match the stone, and why do you not put an undercut into the prongs? My guess is that 3D printing is not precise enough, plus variances in the stones, and it's better to do that by hand when doing the setting. But I really have no idea.
Your guess is kind of correct - its all do do with the variables of materials and manufacturing techniques.
Boolean difference failed. What are the properties of the "medallion" 3d object that makes it different from a 3d box I draw in Rhino? With the 3d box any text drops to the "bottom" of the box... ......... There is something very specific here that you assume is already in place.
Hi @martina5328 - Not sure I understand regarding the "3d box" or "Boolean Difference Failed" parts of your comment. There is are boolean difference commands or text commands featured in this tutorial. Sure you've commented on the correct video ?
@@jackrow1332 I am merely saying that you do not specify the conditions under which this works. Creating a cube or box straight from the toolbox and then trying to add text like this does not work. Adding a surface to that cube (and it looks like or one would assume that the cube comes with surfaces) does not change the fact that it does not work. It may seem obvious to you or to Rhino developers, but for anyone new to it, it has zero user friendlness. This leaves them extremely vulnerable to new competition.
Rhino for sure has a particular learning curve. And has it's strengths and weaknesses. Booleans aren't really its forte . Rhino is a surface modeller first and foremost. I teach my students not to reply upon Boolean operations - we surface model, then once we have the hang of that, we can use booleans to save us time, in certain scenarios . And if a Boolean fails, we know how to surface model around the problem. If you treat it like a solid modeller, you're bound to encounter problems. If you're struggling with the software (most people do) I'd be happy to have a chat with you regarding online lessons, if you're interested.
So helpful, thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Do you have any other way of smoothing rings? Like Zbrush? Bcos 3d coat screws up the topology of the ring and it is not renderable. Any other way to smoothen the rings with perfect topology?
I mostly model for manufacturing, not rendering so afraid I cant help in this case.
Hey man, thanks for the tutorial; im having a hard time using boolean union to make it a single object; and getting shading problems where the shank meets the start of the prongs
As long as the individual parts of your model don't have any bad edges and they intersect, your file should still be fine for 3d printing. If you want to send me your file to look at and let you know how to fix it, send it over to jack@jackrow.com
hi there!! tks for your videos, are so hel´ful por me, but i have bunch of doubts... i design and manufact jewerly and 3d is nes forme, i have lot of problems with stones.. i mean, the stone mesure most be .2 big on the design rigth? but i think that the hole of barrens arent enough because the stones just doesnf fit, so any advise of you could be very helpful tku very much
How can I help you?
Helpful class🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much 🙏
You're very welcome.
Thank you a lot. It is very detailed.
You are welcome!
Hello! could you please give us the conversion formulas for 10K and 24K? Thank you for the helpful spreadsheet!
Sure thing! Ill update the file when I get chance
Another great teaching video. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the clear instructions. It helps to take the guess work out of CAD to product.
You're welcome!
Hello! Thank you so much for these videos! I'm having trouble fixing the intersection. When I use the gumball to drag the rail curve down it only moves that curve by itself and not the actual object of the twisted prong. Do you know what I may be doing wrong?
make sure record history is turned on.
It is happening something similar to me, the record history is on, I can fix the curve on the bottom, but when I try to move the curve to correct the intersections the complete curve moves and do not change the sweep made before, not sure this is something with the new version of rhino.
Feel free to send your file and I'll take a look: jack@jackrow.com
Muchas gracias
Welcome!
Boa noite! Parabéns pelo vídeo! Tenho dificuldade pra unir as garras no aro....

How would I check the karat weight if I put stones in the piece ?
You'll need to take the stones away or you will not have an accurate estimate.
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!!
Thanks!
really well educated tutorial! thank you!
Glad you liked it
Thanks so much, this was really helpful
Glad you liked it!
Try importing as a obj file. You won't get those strange artifacts that a STL file has. Scale to 2000. Do your smoothing, etc, then export as STL. The results will be MUCH better!😀
Thank you for the tip!
I scale 99% of my models to 102.5% Have you ever used 3dCoat? It is an excellent program for importing your (obj) rhino models into, then doing all your boolean operations. Then you can do a smoothing operation and export to STL for RP printing. No boolean fails and the model is perfect! Eric Marvets has an excellent tutorial on this if you are interested. ruclips.net/video/HwyGIEssfqc/видео.html
Thank you. You should become the teacher. Easy explanation ❤
I AM a teacher! If you are interested in lessons, drop me an email: jack@jackrow.com
thank you for your clear explanation and for sharing the spreadsheet, very helpful!
Glad you liked it
thank you
Welcome
Why can't I make a curve network? It keeps telling me "Unable to sort curves. Select curves one at a time. Unable to use this curve network."
Probably an error with one or more of the curves and their positions relative to one another. Send me the file and I can check for you: jack@jackrow.com
Just starting to learn Rhino. This was extremely helpful. thank you. How do I get the stone downloads?
Glad I could help. The link is the description.
One more time bro, Thank You, i hope you'r well!
I've been looking for this for months. you have no idea how much you have helped me, thank you for sharing this knowledge. Happy birthday!. let karma come back to you
