Closest thing i ever did to a cruise was book a room on a cargo ship from Shanghai to Seattle. 18 days at sea, 4 passengers, 30 crew on a 900ft container ship. Weather was surprisingly nice on the Bering Sea in June and its the ultimate form of peace and isolation you can get while also actively traveling from point A to B.

Bulbous bow (which is what Tyler described) is for fuel efficiency moving through the water. Stabilizers (which is what April mentioned) are an entirely different thing, and extend out like wings, from the center of the ship, underwater. These are 2 completely different things. A bulbous bow cannot malfunction. Stabilizers that fail to deploy, sure, that can break.

Tyler is right that you get what you pay for. Never go on cheap cruise lines. Viking cruises are amazing. They don't pack 5000 people on a ship. It is less than 1000 and the crew to passenger ratio is the best in the industry.

As someone who's in the cruise industry, you're cherry picking a handful out literally 200,000 cruises. Like the poop flight from hell a few weeks ago doesn't mean air travel is horrible. A cruise is 20 times more clean than your land based restaurant. Why? Every piece of machinery in the galley is USPH certified. All new cruises have HVAC systems due to COVID and have COVID procedures now. There are literally thousands of crew members cleaning the vessel while you're sleeping. A few tips, Virgin Cruises is 18 and over with made to order food. DO NOT go onto a Carnival ship unless your in your 20's and want to party. If too many people are an issue, find an expedition vessel like Lindblad Expeditions where there are 150 people onboard. You can hang with the Captain, doors the bridge are open and they take you to a place where everyone does an excersion together. There are a ton of options. You won't get sick a large vessel, you have no clue you're even moving.

I have to agree with April about feeling confined & worried about being seasick the whole time. I do like the idea of the European river cruises on smaller boats - but the idea of an ocean cruise on a 300 meter long ship with thousands of people crammed onto it - for me, stuff of nightmares.

I was on a cruise to Sydney Australia some years ago. Every night, drunken Australians were getting into knockdown, drag-out flights and every time we were in port, a number of them were kicked off the ship. It was a running joke during the cruise. I would watch the dock when we tied up and there was always the walk of shame as these people were kicked out and handed over to the local police.

The only cruise we went on, many years ago, when they found out I was a marine engineer, they upgraded our cabin and asked if I could help them fix some stuff on the ship. Turned out that my wife had a pretty good time in first class accommodations and perks, while I spent 6 fun filled days in the bowels of the ship making corrective adjustments to things they didn't know how to do correctly. Didn't exactly inspire confidence that they were so clueless about so many essential systems. Just lucky that most of them worked most of the time.
I always like the characterization of a cruise: stuck in a cheap motel room / everything worth doing is too crowed to make it doable / anti-seasick meds and alcohol don't behave well together / like a resort where all the staff wishes you'd go away and not come back.

You missed the Royal Majesty from Boston to Bermuda, I was on it. On the way back to Boston, while eating dinner, I felt the ship hit something and heard the motors roaring, forwards and back. I looked at everyone and said "we're stuck", they all thought I was nuts. Yep, we were stuck, the captain drove us onto a sandbar. The ship started listing and it took a full moon and 7 tug boats the next night to get us out. I got a free extra day of the cruise, but they were ruining out of food fast, we even had sharks circling the ship, it was nuts...

I have been one one cruise. Decided it's not for me , my biggest complaint is dumping several thousand people off on an island , multiple cruise ships at the same place and same time. I guess the locals appreciate the business.
We were with our own small group of friends and when we stopped in Jamaica , I got us all together and hired a driver with a mini bus from around the corner of the terminal. We had a great day, saw some things sort of off the regular tourist route, met some awesome locals. Best day of the cruise, but I doubt seriously I'll ever do another.

I love how April quickly changed her tune when she saw those sails...lol
$4.6 million is likely no more than a single tank of diesel and possibly even less. As for the stabilizers, just about every yacht over 45 feet has a stabilizer. The purpose isn't to keep it from falling over it's to counteract the rolling caused by waves. Meanwhile Hoovie thinks the bulbous bow is the stabilizer when it's actually there to alter the waveform of the hull, increasing the speed a displacement hull can travel at. The cruise ship that lost a stabilizer had fin stabilizers and lost control of one side causing the ship to list to that side.

Did a Princess cruise to Alaska in 2013. That was my first and only time I will do a cruise. I was motion sick the first full day, while we were out in the open Pacific. The only thing memorable from the trip was doing the "shore excursions", including a dog camp in Skagway and the train ride into the Yukon. The ship was very clean, and the crew was extremely serious about keeping it that way.

Tyler is describing graphically a bulbous bow which does help somewhat with stability, but is primarily for efficiency. Large cruise ship stabilizers are wings that come out from the sides of the ship. Some smaller ships have gyroscopic stabilizers that stabilize the ship in the same way as a Segway scooter.

ive been on a few cruises mostly with NCL and i like them. as long as you dont spend too much time in you cabin which can be kinda small you probably wont feel claustrophobic, modern cruise ships are very stable and you get comfortable with the small amount of movement. with all the crap that the carnival group gets up to just avoid them costa is also part of carnival. dont go near a ship doctor unless you are dying because they can force you to be locked in ur cabin covid style even pre covid i was on a cruise and a family we met had a kid that wasnt feeling well and the locked out his key card so he couldnt do anything out side his room and they had the housekeeping staff keeping an eye on him. Crystal cruises was going under i think theyve be restructured cuz i saw that ship in st thomas in january. NCL doesnt offer the drink package on the pride cruises cuz people have gotten so hammered in the past. being on a cruise ship in big seas is actually really fun if you embrace it. windsurf is so cool

I've done quite a few cruises, just got back from an Alaska cruise which was great..some old folks on board, but lots of 30, 40 year olds..no cruises are perfect, but none of mine were bad at all..

Tyler that is not necessarily true. Carnival has the biggest fleet and makes it affordable for the average person. Tell April it’s worth the chance. Try a 3 or 4 day.

Been on one cruise, terrible experience. It was a lower cost Carnival cruise and before we left port we could see how it was going to be as kids were already running around at will and causing problems. Found out while at see that 70% of the boat was under the age of 16. Could never get in to the pool, was packed with kids. Kids running up and down halls sounding like herds of elephants day and night. I could go on. Was not relaxing at all. Only adult only area was tucked in the stern below main deck and was hotter than hell with no airflow.

My wife and I cruised on Royal Caribbean. Oasis of the Seas from Cape Liberty to Orlando and Nassau and their private island. And it was HEAVEN. Smooth sailing. No seasickness. Even through a little storm. Everything was fun.
April, take it from fellow Chicagoans: cruising on a good cruise line is wonderful. Tyler: if you convince her then you can book RC.

Cruise ships require you to complete a health questionnaire before you board and everyone needs to be healthy enough to travel so the Medical facility on the ships don't often see any serious issues and mostly they have seasick patients, or scraps and bruises due to falls on the stairs.

I've only been on one cruise, back in '08 when I proposed to my now wife. It happened to be a Carnival cruise, and one of the last for that ship before it was sold to another company. I had no bad experiences (other than feeling some rocking on the first night only), it was visibly clean, nice stops, etc.
That said - I'm not going back. For the same money as a decent cruise, I can go to an all-inclusive resort and we enjoy that more.

Before any extremity of the body “falls off” there’s always an infection that starts at the sight which also will be painful and include a fever and most likely nausea. So, that person must have ignored a fever, nausea, high heart rate, and a bad and growing infection at the sight of the injection for days long before gangrene set in. All that without going to the emergency room.

Princess does overnight cruises between Vancouver BC and Seattle WA. This one is known as the party cruise. Princess has admitted that they sell more liquor on this overnight cruise than they do on most two-week cruises. If you like to party, it's a ton of fun.

The reason that spaces open up at care homes is also only because the previous tenants died and most likely in the room. People die all the time and that isn't something that should make you feel nervous about cruising.

Cruise ships post their course a week in advance and send copies to the Coast Guard who are supposed to inform them of any temporary are closures due to rocket launches which get rescheduled constantly.

Cruising attracts a disproportionate number of highly, morbidly obese people, which is just shocking as they line up at the elevators and the dessert buffet. It doesn't surprise me that noroviruses spread like crazy, because there's no way people that can barely move are able to clean themselves properly.

If you want to see a great cruise review, You tuber Jeb Brooks and his wife Suzanne sailed on the Queen Mary 2 in a nice stateroom from NYC to Southampton, England. That's a classy ship and Cunard is one of the best lines in the world. Cunard is a little stuffy with dress requirements for dinner. The ship Tyler picked would make a great honeymoon trip.
