When I was a child back in the 70's, I read about her in Jet magazine. I remember being so proud. I loved to sing, and wanted to be like opera singers. To me, there was nothing more special than a black opera singer; they were so elegant and graceful. I always wanted that persona for myself. Sadly, I have a voice that's better suited for jazz than opera, but I still love the regality of the black opera singer.

I had the opportunity to enjoy her great Aida at the Colon Theater in the 70´s. Just an extraordinary character.

She is and was a consummate artist. One of the most beautiful Verdi sopranos who has ever lived. I, too, think that--although she had a storied career--she was underrated. I'm so grateful that she recorded as much as she did so that we have a record of her beautiful voice.

Totally agree. Dare I say it, in some ways she’s better than Price but was overshadowed a bit by her.

@@SteveL2012 At least a bit. My Genovese friend whose encyclopedic opera knowledge leaves mine far behind, said, "I think, of the two, her voice is a bit sweeter".

I once had the joy of conducting Aida with Martina in the title role. Apart from being a sublime soprano she had a wicked sense of humour which made the 3 weeks of rehearsal absolutely wonderful !!

I've always adored her. I'll never forget when she had a guest role on the Odd Couple with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall way back in 1975. She was so cute and charming on that episode.

I remember that. I was sooooo excited. Before that episode, I don't even remember seeing black people on that show. I loved Martina Arroyo, so I was thrilled.

What a wonderful person. I'm sorry she did not have the recording career that Leontyne Price had during her career. I think she was underappreciated even though she owned several roles, particularly Elsa in Lohengrin. I heard her sing Turandot in Toronto. It was spectacularly beautiful. Perfect beautiful singing, and yet I don't think she made headlines with the role at the Met.

Oh I wish I could have heard her Turandot. And yes she should have recorded much more. Such a beautiful rich sound.

Her Andromache’s Farewell with NY Phil and Schippers has to be rated as some of the greatest singing ever captured on record. Untouchable singing.

It's ironic that she says she connects less with Mozart than some other composers when she has a marvelous Anna to her credit in Don Giovanni recorded with Colin Davis.
