roscius is right. with the timmy's internal dip switches off (giving two diodes in series on each side) and the jan ray's trim control set in the middle they are extremely close to the same circuit. the jan ray's trim control sets the cut off freq of the bass roll off that is more dominant when the main bass control is set low and also affects the gain. the simple treble cut control in this circuit is stolen from a RAT. these 2 pedals have soft clipping like a Tube screamer whereas the RAT has hard clipping so they don't sound the same. but if you spliced the front end of a tube screamer ( and added a bit more pre clipping bass with the bass control used here) onto the rear end of a rat it would sound like these pedals.
That’s great information thanks. I still need to get a Timmy to compare but that’s very helpful to get them as close as possible first. Too bad Timmy is getting as expensive as these lately… will the MXR version do it too?
They are both equally interesting. The ts side of the Duellist is one of the better ones I’ve heard. I think I need to mess with the internal switches to really bond with it.(Duellist that is) The Jan Ray is great stacked too. I especially love my sd9 into it. Who woulda known that works?! 😊
@@joeriffanucci I agree, it has lots of headroom which helps! I think Doyle Bramhall uses it as a foundation pedal for his fuzzes...great to take off the edge just a bit.
Always gonna be a Timmy comment when you bring up the Jan Ray. I think they are totally different and I have both on my board. I prefer the Jan Ray for clarity and creamy gain.
The Jan Ray has been a mainstay on one of my boards for years now. I need to try a Timmy just so I can make the comparison but I’m in total agreement about how the Jan Ray sounds and feels.
Timmy isn’t overpriced now? I suppose once I get a Timmy in my hands I’ll make the comparison. I’ve heard what your saying before and understand the sentiment. At least it’s not a bbe wah…..
I’ll seek one out and do the test. I just never heard the bf fender gain thing in the Timmy/Tim but maybe that’s just the videos I’ve watched. Honestly this video needs to be updated to the HD audio and video format that I’m doing now for a more fair example of the Jan.
It's a Timmy preset to the most compressed Timmy clipping setting with a more limited tone control range. Sean from Lovepedal did it first with the OD side of the AMP11 and then Vemuram copied him. In a way it was a clever move for Lovepedal & Vemuram to kind of limit the Timmys range to something that makes it harder to get abrasive sounds out of popular Fender silver and blackface amps. You give up some versatility & EQ range to make it more fool-proof. The annoying thing was Vemuram not acknowledging the circuit origin when they first released the pedal, and instead making up a story of years worth of R&D.
Wow that’s some impressive lineage of cloning. Didn’t know Sean got in on the action too. Is there somewhere I can see this information you’re describing? I’m just glad I didn’t buy an Axis wah🤘

that pedal board looks focused. great video
Thanks for dropping by and checking it out.
Saturation/trim pot on minimum is the best option
I have to agree. Seems to have broader shoulders. Focused lows and clarity. I'm always dialing back the gain.
Yes and I bought the cheap version from demonfx and it sounds super with a caline American sound in front
very cool. IMO, the blackface fender sound has a wider bandwidth. I wonder how the super six pedal compares to the jan ray for these sounds.
Thanks for watching. I haven’t tried that one yet. I tend to use the Jan Ray with a bf circuit to just make it sound like the amp is turned up.
Duellist or Jan Ray? I have the Jan Ray at the moment and think about branching out...

Is you guitar volume knob turned down? My jan ray sounds a lot more powerful than this.
Yes the bias/gain mini pot is turned down. That might be why. What kind of guitar do you use with yours?
It's probably due to the setting of the jan ray volume at 8ish... you need go at least to 9 in order for the pedal to open up. At least with mine..
This cannot be good: you do not sound like John Mayer. Kidding. Great tones.
😂 I like it🤘 thanks for checking it out.
It's an over priced Tim/Timmy rip off people. It sounds great
coz It's an over priced Tim/Timmy rip off
Sorry to spoil the fun

I just think you may as well pay the guy that did the work.
