I was in Vienna in november.. we loved the little glühwein boots.. and the potatos on the stick... also tried a baumkuchen ( I have never seen a baumkuchen). We were 6 women and we loved it.

It is fitting that this is the day you put a video out, because today I attended to an event that would be right up your alley. Dining at Kronborg castle. First a guided tour followed with a communal dinner down in the old kitchens. Lovely evening. Could have been fun spotting you there.

Love those European Christmas markets! Coincidentally, I just pulled out a stein from the Berlin market we went to a few years ago!

    Greetings from Vienna!
I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend here. Unfortunately you ended up at probably the worst of Viennese Christmas markets - the one at the Rathaus. It is considered to be a tourist trap, kitschy and just not 'the place to go'. I guarantee that you will seldom find a Viennese resident there. The one at the cathedral (St. Stephan) is a bit better and the other one you visited - the handicraft one in front of the Karlskirche - is well liked by the Viennese. But I do agree that you don't find many unusual items to buy, and you find mostly the same things all over. Next time (LOL) try to visit the market at Schoenbrunn and the one at Belvedere Palace.

Sounds like a generally good experience anyway. Not been to all too many Christmas markets myself, but the overall vibe needs to be there, and the less I expect, the greater the chance that I will enjoy it and find it memorable. I have a Danish colleague who, actually, visited the very same Christmas market in Vienna one of the first weeks of December, and enjoyed it.
If you ever find that you want to explore another kind of market/fair, I can suggest the "Äppelmarknaden" in Kivik, Sweden (Apple market). It takes place at another time of the year, and have another angle to all and everything. (Think apples, apples and even more apples. They even have apples!) Willing to guide you if the need arises.

I can also recommned the Christmarkets at Schoenbrunn and the one at Belvedere Palace, after been there couple of times.
Maybe for 2024 Christmas you can consider Bucharest, last I was there in 2015, all sold there was very local.

I heard that the Christmas market at Krusmølle near Aabenraa, Southern Jutland should be good

    Nice! 🙂
6:00 the stalls at St. Stephen's are a quite recent addition, but this is far from the main Christmas market. That would be the one in front of city hall. Also, Spittelberg is well known, and the one in front of Schönbrunn Castle close to where I live is also fairly large - together with numerous others sprinkled around the city and countryside outside of Vienna...
I don't know any Viennese who would go to a Christmas market for eating or shopping. You go there for the hot punch and for the atmosphere - and maybe eat a few snacks to bolster the punch drinking... ;-)
Nobody would get a pastry at a Christmas market, of course they are stale sitting outside in winter. That's what Viennese coffee house culture is for, also the numerous pâtisseries and bakeries.
    Cheers from Vienna! 🙂
